So, Our 2nd annual gathering at my place will be March 3rd, 4th, 5th. We decided to move it back this year due to extreme cold weather we had last year. Anyways, this gathering consisting of bowbuilding, arrow building and a whole lot of BSing. I have a big shop with wood stove(we may still need it) a shooting range and about 18ac to throw up a tent or bring a camper. I also have a couple campers that will be in place if needed. This is the beginning of this thread and I am sure there will be more added to it. So put it on your calenders and feel free to contact me. Thanx! BOWWOOD

Though I nigh about froze off my PaTookus last year at this event, I WOULDN'T MISS IT FOR NOTHING YOU CAN NAME!
It was a great time with heaping helpings of hospitality, great food, loads of bowyer/fletcher knowledge sharing, some AMAZING shine, and a ton of good times. Oh, and Chris's shop is awesome enough to make a good and holy man covet! The course he has set up out there is as good as any I've ever shot on, despite the sub-zero temps I got to know it under. :) Also, watch out for deer wearing blaze orange...
I have a few staves I'll bring up that are well dried and ready to go if somebody needs something to work on. I didn't pay nothing for them, so you won't either. If you're traveling from afar and can get a cheap flight into St. Louis, you won't even need to bring a bunch of tools or materials. Several of us likely have stuff to spare and share.

Been anticipating this announcement! Almost in my backyard (though Chris lives on "right" side of tracks), so will be there for sure.
;D
-
I can't wait for this event either! It was a blast last year even with the subzero temps. Good thing though is that we would carry the caul outside after a heat session. It only took a minute before it was ready to be removed. And if I remember right someone slept on a cot in the shop right in front of the wood stove. So there is always that!
Ill be there this go around as well, flying plywood pending! Ill bring a stave or two, a couple of near finished bows and my caul. So come on over guy's its a lot of fun! Can't wait!

As far as the course goes, what were your fav's last year guys? My were the "sittin on the bucket shot" and the "Rat on a Stump".

I'll be there and probably be able to stay seeing as how my house is finished now! Hopefully Jon can find a way to make it. That peach shine was fantastic.
-
There is a possibility that I might make it. As a side note, I don't recall any moonshine. Everyone knows un-taxed spirits are not legal! ???
-
There is a possibility that I might make it.
wooooohoooo! Be real nice to The Wife between now and then.
-
Thanx for the input fellas. If you made it last year please put forth some input of what you like, what you didn't and suggestions to make it better. I remember beadman made it down from Iowa, we had KOHN from over in Columbia MO and several local guests from the area that stopped in, Josh made it up from Arkansas. We had folks from all over. So again if you have any interest please feel free to message me or any of the others guys that have posted on this thread. Look forward to hearing from you all. BOWWOOD

Fav was the turkey ..... reminded me of meself.
Swingin' bag targets were hoot too ...... thought was shootin' with Kavanagh.

What I liked and hope DOES NOT change was/is the hospitality given by the Rackley family. This kind of event takes a serious commitment and I applaud Chris for his effort.

I really enjoyed the swinging ball type target!

I really enjoyed the swinging ball type target!
Patrick
I did NOT like that one even a little bit! I shot three arrows at that one and broke one, lost one, and still didn't hit it!!! ...I think they were even your arrows Patrick that I had borrowed! :-\ :'( >:(
OneBow
-
I think that is true Eric! But thats ok, they are just points sticks! I liked those targets because they were challenging.
Patrick
-
I'll shoot pats arrows all day given the chance. I'm really looking forward to this one again, especially since it will be warmer. I'll out out the free ride from the airport and back if some of our northern brothers are brave enough to come down south. Even some of the guys from the west coast.
-
Dave you were supposed to provide entertainment last year. What's up this time?
-
You guys have a big time... I didn't know you could make bows in Mo. unless it was at least 95 degrees...
;D
-

;D
Well Bob, you might be right we worked on some but they never got done!
Patrick
-
I can probably provide at least some this year. >:D but I don't think Mrs. Rackley would approve and I know Mike would tell on us all.
-
Dave don't worry about Mike. He will be in bed by ten anyway. Chris will just have to tend to the Mrs.
-
yeah,,,,I will take care of the Mrs
-
So to continue this thread I have a pile of brush piles up in case the weather is accommodating to possibly have a fire to sit around one of the nights and possibly pass around adult beverage. I have spoke with a friend of mine about providing a little musical entertainment. If you play an instrument bring it along. The only thing I know to play is the organ. HA! Last gathering we provided a meals on Saturday,,,I am sure this year will be no different, ie, ham n beans or veg soup n sandwiches maybe chili, meat in the smoker,,,IDK will see, input is appreciated. Pat n Jon n Eric n Josh all supplies breakfasts essentials and Pat whipped up a mean biscuits n gravy. Anyway I am sure we wont go hungry. I was hoping to have the bathroom in the shop ready for this years gathering but once again I am a procrastinator and didn't get that accompolished,,,,,,,,yet. If you would rather not reside @ The Blind Archer Mule Ranch there is an economical motel about 4mi up the road and about 8mi away in Warrenton there is a Holiday Inn Express. Come one, come all!
-
Carol and I would "normally" have lotsa sleep space here at home. But it's gonna be awhile before things get back to "normal" again.
Soooooo, we had space for 1, but Jon's got dibs on that!
-
I am planning on being there for at least part of it. looking forward to it!
Neal
-
I was the one onda cot next to the stove, lol... And i slept like a baby all nice and warm 😄... Work is gonna keep me humpin from Detroit to Ft Wayne to Long Island and maybe even across da big pond but if im home i will do my best to get there 👍... As far as targets go i loved the rat and the zombie 😄 .... Brian
-
Will be looking for ya, Neal!
Hope the work schedule works out and ya can make it, Brian.
-
GUYS WE ARE NOT GETTING MUCH FEEDBACK FROM OTHERS HERE!
-
You are correct Chris, but with our group it should be a great time.
Was you hinting that you wanted biscuits and sausage gravy again? I might do homemade biscuits this time if I can. Its kinda hard for me when we don't get to bed before the dawns early light  Im not the best at being a morning person, unless im still awake! Lol
Patrick
-
I spoke with Ed. He said he would show up at some point.
-
I wasn't sure how suttle I needed to make that hint Pat. HA! biscuits n gravy is a staple,,,,had it for dinner tonite in fact. If there is time for homemade biscuits then fine,,,if not fine too. I picked up sum pork ribs earlier that I plan on finding their way to the smoker that weekend. There are several local guys that say they will make it over also that weekend.
-
Here is something to think about fellas. The Buffalo Tongue Trad Shooters are a group of guys that have been getting together for bout 20yrs now I think on Sunday morning @ the archery range @ August Busch Conservation area and stump shoot. Might be a good way to spend a Sunday Morning, meet sum fellow trad shooters. It takes about 30min to get there from my place. Anyway no decisions need to be made now just throwing it out there.
-
That's good news, Jon.
That would be fun, Chris. Those fellas would never have seen so many quality selfbows!
-
I like the idea of doing the Buffalo Tongue shoot on Sunday. I've never been there so I don't know much about it. Is there a 3D course? I can't shoot worth a spotted bean, ...but it's still fun to try some.

I found a link to the BTTBH Facebook page:

That's the group Eric. I shoot with them as much as I can. They are a good time and a great group of fellows. Mike bid one of the young ones there!. How just turned 77 last Monday!
Also, I will be kids free the weekend of the get together, so that means ikl have three empty bedrooms. I live about 20 min east of Chris. A straight shot down hwy 70 if anyone wants or needs a place to stay.
-
I spoke with a friend last evening about coming up for the event. He'd be totally new to bow building, but he's done some archery. I built a couple bows for his sons last year, and he'd like to make one more man sized for himself. He may bring a friend of his too and they'd be coming from Kansas City area. They plan to get a hotel.
My brother Nathan is planning to join us this year and he has a couple bow building projects to work on. Also, my son Wil maybe be able to join us, but he's not sure yet.
Additionally, I spoke with a friend that I met when I was doing some survival skills training. He's made a few bows and would like to come up as well.
I've got some spare bow benches with vices. I'll be sure to throw those on the trailer with my tools.
Chris, you may want to build a new bow shop wing onto the work shop before March 3rd. :)
OneBow
-
And you, Eric, may need to drive a bus!
If we get reeeeeeeeal lucky, Chris may have a commode installed in the shop. But don't hold your breath. >:D

I've got two fellas staying at my place and have room for at least one more. Just putting it bout there that if anyone wants to fly into stl I only live twenty min from the airport and have one room left. >:D

If I can, I would take you up on that extra room.
I got a lot going on right now and more to come in the near future. I hope once it all slowes down I can have you guy's to my place for a gathering.
Patrick
-
ok fellas,,,,if all go as planned, there will be a fully functioning usable bathroom in the shop for the gathering, yep hot shower, commode the whole ball of wax. may not be the prettiest but I have started. ya know why wait till the last minute I have only had the last 13months to get it done. HA!
-
Wow now that's hospitality!
-
Chris . . . ya just needed a clear deadline. This is great of you! Assume hot tub will be in working order too?
-
<snip> Assume hot tub will be in working order too?
Next he'll be asking for a bidet and a tanning bed!!! >:D :o ::)

-
If you guys eat those ham and beans you'll have a Jacuzzi... ;D
-
Alright Chris! Now thats luxary right there! A pooper in the bow shop is up town! Can't wait to give it a swirl. >:D
Patrick
-
OK fellas,,,we are bout 2-1/2weeks out from the gathering,,,I would like to get a head count so I know how many to plan for. Still working on getting the bathroom done, shop cleaned up and usable along with making the homestead look a little more respectable @ Blind Archer Bow Co. & Mule Ranch
-
I will start, Ill be there for sure. I will have to say maybe on my friend.
Can't wait for this weekend, im in much need of some down time in the shop with friends!
Patrick
-
Our weather has been simply wonderful! I mean, REALLY WONDERFUL!
There could be crocus' blooming at Chris' place if this keeps up.
{knock_on_wood}
-
I'll be there, if you'll have me. >:D
-
Ok, we might let you in Mike. Since you asked nicely!
Patrick
-
OK - I confirmed my Brother, my nephew, and my other nephew this weekend. Yesterday I confirmed an old friend from survival training skills camp. He had actually originally said that he would likely bring a few with him, but now is only coming alone.
I have 3 others that are interested, but not yet confirmed. So, in summary, we are looking at 5 with the possibility of as many as 3 to 4 more among those that I have solicited.
OneBow
-
I'd love to come but can't commit and beside I wouldn't be much help on bows. >:D
-
Come on down Scott. Im sure we could find a way for you to break some rocks. It is Missouri after all. We grow them here.
Besides, I know you can shoot, Chris has a nice course at his house!
Patrick
-
I actually have a 5gl bucket of rocks and tools i got off of a friend of scotts several yrs ago at mojam,,,,,they need broke.
-
. . . I wouldn't be much help on bows. >:D
HA! Hope it works that ya can make it!
-
I'm in. I've got floor space left! Scott can't commit but may surprise? I'm looking forward to the course.
-
It's soooooooo nice to live sooooooo close that packing isn't a consideration. >:D
Also, count on Carol to treat us all to breakfast again at Dennys on Sunday morning. Unless, of course, ya prefer Waffle House.
-
Hill,,,Am pretty sure breakfast was Monday morning cause I didn't get to go cause I had to work.
-
I am gonna make sure that Mikey has to tiller his own bow. Time for the apron strings to be cut Mike! >:D
-
I will be there Friday afternoon and Saturday. Dave can I use some of your floor space? Actually quite a bit of your floor space cause I'm a fat guy! :)
Looking forward o seeing everybody!
Neal
-
Yay!
Good for you Mike!
Patrick
-
I am gonna make sure that Mikey has to tiller his own bow. Time for the apron strings to be cut Mike! >:D
Never fear Jon, I'm bringing new guys for you tie to your apron, ...so you won't have to sit around bored the whole time. Heck, I wouldn't mind to have you tiller one of mine for me! I've been doing this nigh on twenty some years, and I'd love to learn how to tiller like JonW! One of the best bows I own, you made Jon! hehehe
OneBow
-
I'd be honored to have Neil Young as a guest! I might even let you have the couch. it's getting close now boys!

If anyone who is coming to The Gathering has some hard maple staves, I'd be interested in some kinda deal.
-
Thanks Dave!
-
Dave, I have couple cots if there's the need.
-
Me and Wyatt are thinking about coming if you guys will let us will know for sure by first part of next week. Andy
-
c'mon feathersnwood. this is open to those that are able and want to attend. I am just trying to get head counts so I know how many to expect. Posted earlier in the thread I stated I have an airstream that sleeps 3 comfortably and a pop up that sleeps 3 comfortably that will be set up. I have plenty of room to throw up a tent or bring in campers.(sorry no real hook up) There is also a little economical(about $40 I believe) motel about 4mi in town of Wright City or more upscale hotels in Warrenton about 6mi away. I have a small 15target walk through target range on the property that is available to shoot as you wish and we are talking about taking a short drive on sunday morn and shooting with a local group at Bush Wildlife area in St. Charles MO but nothing set in stone. My plan is to provide probly chil and sandwiches on Saturday lunchtime ish and probly also breakfast Saturday morn. I may have to ask everybody to throw a few bucks in the kitty and we can pick up sum meat and throw it in the smoker or on the grill Saturday night,,,or you can be on your own. I am in the process of finishing up the full functional bathroom in the shop so a hot shower and toilet will be available if you choose to camp out. Hopefully the weather will be as great as it was today and the the next couple days. Feel free to message me for more info,,,,,BOWWOOD
-
Mike. I have five bed and two couches. Pat has one room, one bed. Eric has got two rooms and three beds( one room has a full and one has twin bunk beds) Neil has one couch, but Chris still has the air stream. I might give up my bed and room and just stay there. Lol. I still have plenty of space if we need mikes cots, let me know. I talked to Chris a bit today at the Sunday shoot. Things are getting exciting!
-
Nuttin but the best is good enough for you fellers . . . case of Modelo followed me home.
-
I can bring some sausage links for breakfast Saturday. Let me know if there is anything else that I can bring.
Neal
-
Mike I didn't know Modelo made mango flavor >:D

One of the guys that has been at MoJam the last few years (Roger) is going to come over Friday evening and Saturday. He lives right there close somewhere (I think St. Charles).

Thanks Mike!
Sorry to hear about your back, I guess you won't be able to make it to Chris 's next weekend. Sure will miss you! :'(

Mike...we are all such good friends that we will come pick up the Modelo, just so you do not have to put a strain on your back.
-
Hey guys, since we are all getting together I thought I would bring a few things to trade. Maybe we could do some kind of trade blanket or something.
If not that's cool. Ill be bringing some thick leather scraps, some feathers, maybe some shafts and possibly some sinew and maybe a bow to trade. Oh, and some overlay and handle material. Im also bringing a huge chunk of Micarta that I need help cutting down, its round. I could also bring a few staves if they are needed for the new comers. Let me know.
Ed, if you are coming, could you bring your arrow shaft maker?
Patrick
-
trade blanket sounds fine to me. Also,,,btw have chatted with Andy aka feathesrnwood if he is able to make it he will probably bring his trailer and have some goods to sell. OK, so I need sum help here gathering a head count,,,best I can figure 12-15in attendance,,, jonw, Patrick, patches, knoll, eric+4, andy and wyatt, and DVS is all that I know of,,,a few local guys have mentioned stopping by. so if you are planning on attending please chime in or know of anybody else planning to attend please chime in. 8days and counting
-
Ya trade blanket sounds like fun!! I would like to see if you have anymore space available to sleep need two spots. I will be getting there Friday evening wyatt' s mom won't let me take out of school early. See ya then andy feathers n wood
-
Chris, Roger (from MoJam) is planning on coming Friday evening and Saturday.
I think that a trade blanket is a good idea. I will try to get some stuff together to bring.
Neal

Im still up inda air.. On my way back from Detroit right now but i have to go back soon and just dont have exact dates yet... If I dont go i will be at your shindig 👍... Brian

-
Andy and Wyatt have requested use of a camper,,,there are still spots left fellas
-
I now have an additional guy that is planning on coming, so I'm up to OneBow plus 5 or 6. A week from now I plan to be nigh about ready to get some fresh shavings to start falling on your shop floor! It looks like Springfield will be bringing 2 large truck loads up there now. :)
OneBow
-
Yeah me to Eric! Im ready for the shavings to fly! Im pretty sure I have a guy coming with me as well, some of you have met Devon. Might need another spot for him to sleep. This time next week I plan to be sitting in front of my vise!
Patrick
-
<snip>...some of you have met Devon.
DVS - You might remember Devon. If you have any bows you're needing tested, bring 'em over to Chris's place Friday. We'll get Devon to check them out for ya. I hear Chris already has a couple he's gonna get Patrick to check out. I'm pretty sure PaulnKS is wishing he could be here too so Partrick could give his latest a quick pull or two as well. I don't think SwampMonkey is gonna make it, or I'd have my boy Wil bring one of his in process bows to have AJ pull on a little bit.
...and if those fellas can't get the job done up for you, Ole Mike Hill and I have managed to achieve our Master of Disaster ratings on our own stuff several times over.
;) :o ::) ??? >:D ;) :o ::) ??? >:D ;) :o ::) ??? >:D ;) :o ::) ??? >:D ;) :o ::) ??? >:D
Isn't it amazing how many bows we can break for each other and still get along with only limited blood shed?
OneBow
-
That is absolutely hilarious Eric!
But whats so funny is that its so very true.
Patrick
-
Eric you forgot the bow of Pat's that I broke in your backyard. :embarassed:

This is gettin' to be Super Gathering! Hope the IL and KS contingents are well represented.
Today, I finished tillering on one. Guess gonna be starting afresh!
-
Well guy's my buddy Devon is definitely coming next weekend! I guess he will need a place to sleep, does anyone still have a spot?
Patrick
-
Pat I am sure we will figure something out. The airstream will be set up, the pop-up will be set up, Hill has cots, I have cots, we will have heat in the shop with a FUNCTUNIAL BATHROOM. I am not sure about sleeping arrangements in the house as my son has buddies spending the weekend also. Just tell Devon to bring a sleeping bag/bedroll and a pillow and he will have someplace to sleep.
-
Funny one Eric, and don't forget that bow of Patrick's that I broke at Ojam last year... :o :-[
Oh, and the one he talked me into drawing back at Mojam that made a distinct TIC though it didn't break.
Yep, wish I could join you guys. :(
Glad to see that Wyatt and Andy are going to make it, have fun and play nice with the boys from Kansas. :)
-
Paul, good to see you have forgiven me for the little joke I played on you! >:D
Wish you could be there Paul. We will make sure those flat landers are taking care of!
Ill make sure that Devon has a bed role, thanks guy's! Can't wait, less than a week now!
Patrick
-
Hey ...Mike and Bowwood.........I might be able to get away next weekend........... only about a five hour drive..... is there anything I can bring? How about a Dutch oven apple cobble for Saturday ?
DBar
-
That sounds like a great idea DBar! Would love to see you make the drive! See if you can drag that little Clint fella with you to.
Patrick
-
Well darn, was just reminded by my better half, that I have a prior commitment next weekend.
Maybe next year.....
DBar
-
That sucks, they always remind you of those things at the wrong time. Hope to see you next time around.
Patrick
-
Bill . . . beg off the "prior commitment". Gotta keep priorities in proper order!
-
OK guys. I have three bedrooms. Eric and Nathan have one each. One has two beds and floor space for two cots, and the other has one full size bed. Pat has one room that has one bed. I have three couches. Neil has one spoken for. I'll assume Devon has another. We are thinking that Andy and Wyatt can have the air stream at Chris's. That leaves Chris's popup open and if needed, I have more room for cots, but I'm a half hour away. We shot the range today and have some fun shots ready to go to! I'm getting pretty excited!
Eric and pat, can you give me a head count for total people yet? I've got room, just not beds for everyone. :D Mr. Hill has two cots and Chris has some to so we should he good.
-
I will need turn down service and a chocolate on my pillow....
-
I will need turn down service and a chocolate on my pillow....
I'm sure such service is standard at the Knoll Estates JonW. Be sure to bring your trunks for the HotTub and sauna too!
Oh yeah, I nearly forgot, Chris, Patrick wanted me to ask if you got the water pressure adjusted on the bidet yet? He said something about it feeling like a very cold fire hose last year? ...but I'm thinking he may not have been completely sober when he used it so who knows what really happened! :o :o :o
OneBow
-
Dug small depression in backyard this afternoon. Think we have some Christmas chocolate leftovers somewhere in basement.
-
spoke with John Murry this aftnoon,,,he will be in attendance. scored a cupl new targets for the range,,,,wifey is putting final coat on the bathroom as I type this,,,will be setting vanity a commode hopefully tomoro night. it is coming together. 4day countdown
-
I must have not been completely solber Eric, but I think it was a little more like a water hose than a fire hose.
Chris, glad to hear it I can't wait to check out the new ensuite!
Im glad John is going to make it, I always enjoy visiting with him.
Just 3 more days!
Patrick
-
Chris, is there anything that I can bring as far as food? Just wondering....
I need to start getting stuff together that I am going to bring...Time is starting to run short!
Neal
-
I bought the stuff this weekend to make some baked polish sausage. It's made with polish sausage (obviously), cheese, onions, potatoes, mustard and beer. I'll bring it already cooked and we can use it for whatever meal it'll fit in with best. I'll probably throw something else together too...
OneBow
-
I thought about bringing some brats or burgers to throw on a grill, and bringing some sausage links and a few dozen eggs for breakfast Saturday if needed.
Neal
-
I'll throw in some bacon and some hamburger as well if anything else just let me know
-
Pleasant weekend seems to be in the offing.
-
I will be bringing some sweetbreads.
-
As usual, when you guys get together there's no shortage of wonderful eats!
I'll bring some potato chips. :-[
Actually, Carol will be fixin' deviled eggs.
-
Wow...... wish I could be there just to eat.....:)

-
What time are you all thinking you will get there?
-
By this time tomorrow, I could be dodging flying chipboard sheets headed to the Mule Ranch!!! - OneBow
No the chip board migration is only in January. They are also a nocturnal creatures and only fly is 40 mph wind when the temp is in the single digits.
We are planning to leave springfield at 8am tomorrow morning!
Patrick
-
I will be bringing a couple of 1 month old Osage logs I need to split! Im getting them today!
Patrick
-
I will throw some extra wedges in the truck for splitting the log. I will probably be there by noon or shortly after.

We are planning to leave springfield at 8am tomorrow morning!

Grand weekend it was, and over wayyyy too soon!
20+ fellas showed up . . . . knappers, bow-makers, and wanna-be-bowmakers.
Chris (bowwood) and family organized fabulous venue and apparently made dutiful sacrifices to weather gods.
As usual, I did not take advantage of many photo opps, But did put down rasp, heat gun, sandpaper, and bow often enough to capture a few images.
Many stories were told.

Shooting range Chris (and family) set up was first rate. Wish I had captured images of targets!

And it looks like you managed to re-define "stump shooting" as well...

I had a great time too. Pat, you are welcome here anytime, as well as the others. Thanks Chris for letting us party at your place for two days. The while family helped so treat them to something special!
It was good seeing friends and making new ones. I got a few things worked on. Finished a trade, made a few more, shot a bit, ate to much, and had a blast the whole weekend. I'll post my pic tomorrow I took a bunch.

Thanks Dave for letting me sleep on the couch.

Dave I wonder if Mike's confusion had anything to do with the brown bottle in his hand? :o
-
And I thought Dave was my friend . . . . . >:D
Otherwise, great pictures and looking forward to more . . . especially those ones that show Dave huntin' his arrows in the brambles. ;)
Wish we could do this more regularly. On other hand, maybe it would not then be so special.
