I'll be there. You gotta let me know if your tiller is working. We need to dig a trench for cooking rock. I got the sand and rock and canopy in case it rains. I guess we had better clear out another acre Pat.  ;D

If everything goes alright at work I'll be there Friday morning, :) if not I'll be there that evening. For anyone thats coming I would be interested in trading for some arrow making supplies. Feathers, points, raw shafts especially good river cane or tonkin cane. I have some sourwood shoots already. I could also use some tutoring in arrow making. ::)

Pat, wish it was some other weekend. Its the same weekend as Denton hill ETAR. Its the bigest traditional rendezvous in the US, and its in Coudersport, Pa. We've been going there for the last 6 years and its hard to miss a year because of all the people we only get to see there. Maybe some year though.

David, Just run down I15 and Ill meet you at the junction with I70. We can take 70 the rest of the way.

I think I might try to make it to Ryan's next year.  Pappys is great, but its right before the kids get out of school. Ryans is right after they are out so the family could come.  Justin

Ryan, I'd love to make it to one of the big events some year. Just getting a chance to meet and talk to some of the trad archery "celebs" would be cool.     Pat

Hey Nugget, I'm comming down 40 to Ashville. If you need a ride let me know and I can pick you up. We could meet somewhere off of I40 or around it to stash your truck.  The only problem is I am comming down Thursday. Have to dig a heat treating pit etc. I will have my truck so there is lots of room.

Hey Patty B.   I'm gonna try to make it but my wife is having her hip replaced on the 14th and will be recovering for quite some time.  Also, there happens to be a certain 7 month old that will need watching.  Maybe I can get my mom to cover for me for a night.

Is it right that you will be turning 35? ;D

I will be there pat. Not sure how early but was thinking friday round noon.

TJ - sent you an email regarding giving you a lift. I could get you there but you might have to find a different way home. Have to pick up my wife's mom from charlotte on sunday round 2 I think. The price of getting away for the weekend.

looking forward to it. Will bring up some toys and materials.

Too bad I just found out now about y'all building a pit for treating rock..... I have been cooking rock all day in the oven..... my wife is gonna hit the roof when she gets home from work.... house is hot as hades. Picked up approx 50 lbs of untreated flint ridge while I was up in OH.

gotta run and actually get some work done.
later.

Hey n2everything.  What part of Ohio did you pick that rock up from?  My wife is from the Akron area and once a year we go up to visit her folks.  I would love to get hold of some.  Did you buy it from somewhere? or hunt it out from the woods?
Title: Re: Patty's Camp-O-Rama and primitive skills weekend
Post by: n2everythg on July 08, 2008, 11:42:41 am
I went to the Flint ridge park. It is about 5 miles north of I-70 on 668. West of Zanesville and south east of Newark.

There are several dealers up there close to the museum. The museum sells some really nice heat treated bifaces but the cost is high. I got a few anyway. Good thing to support and it is a cool museum if you are up that way. They had a knapper working and nice displays and some trails thru the woods. West of the museum on Flint ridge road is a private museum and shop. I got the untreated rock there for bout 2$/lb. Most of the other dealers were down at a knapp-in in southern OH.

The guy I got it from said he would be interested in trading for some NC rock If I brought some up next time I came. Figure I will head back up that way in the early spring. Will put the word out b4 I go. shoot me a PM and I will give you his name and contact info if you are interested.

sorry to get off topic but I will bring some up to Pat's to play with.

later,
wade

Hay I just spotted a toilet on the side of the road during one of the yearly large item pickups the city does.
Headed out to snatch it right now.
I thought I would bring it up to pats for folks to play with.

Question is should I break it up some before I come up and save messing up pats yard or should I bring it up whole.
Never busted up a tank for knapping. Any suggestions?

Pat what is yoru preference? we could probably haul away any mess we make for the most part and save you having to throw out pieces..

Well ended up with 2 tanks... and get this I scored a 60" road killed corn snake on the way back from picking them up.
After smashing up the bowls I have a 5 gal pail full of decent pieces to knapp (and a 1/2 doz bleeding wounds). Wife asked if I had fun after I came in to soak up the blood. Man this stuff is sharp. Will bring up the 2 tanks and lids to play with.

Snake skin is drying as well. :)

Wade, cool score on the corn snake, they sure have a nice pattern. Never saw one up here in the mountains.

Sounds good guys! I'll bring some locust and walnut, maybe some hickory too. I have two sets of osage billets and one set of locust that I'm bringing to see if I can get some advice on splicing. I've never done that before and my osage supply is about gone so these billets are too valueable to me not to use. I'm planning on doing some logging when I'm in Kansas this fall.  ;D

For the flat landers, We have been having cool night time temps so bring appropriate layers.

Anybody have a scrap of hardwood I can have for a handle? I've got a boo/ipe blank that I want to glue up there and it's going to need a riser.  All I've got left is red oak which would be ugly and some mahogany that didn't like being a handle last time I tried.

Thanks,

Wanted to let y'all know what I planned to do for Sat night potluck.
I was at the store tonight getting groceries and consumable liquids....
Anyway I stared and stared at the meat.... didnt have a clue...
You guys always seem to have so much good meat anyway.....

So I bought Spuds... HUGE frickin spuds. got 12 bakers and all the fixins and foil. got bacon bits, cheeze, sour cream and the works...
Figured I would throw them in the fire an hour before we decided we would eat. Should be nuf for all. One looks too much for me. like i said these things are HUGE... so dont no body else bring 'taters'.
Course I bought plenty of hydrating liquids as well.

Sound OK?

Cant wait. been looking forward to this for a while.
see Y'all there

Wade, sounds like you took the tater by the horns.  ;D Good for you. Sounds good to me. I have a leg-o-lamb that Alan Brown gave me I was gonna do something with.
John, osage OK. I'll see what else I may have.
I got a call from Tom Brennan(Tom B) tonight. He and his son Patrick(Lil Pat) are coming for a few hours on Saturday. Some of you guys know Tom but some don't. A few weeks ago, Tom had a portion of a brain tumor removed. I'm pleased he is well enough to come and honored that he would. He told me tonight that most of what they took out was Yankee! ;D
My weekend starts tomorrow when Dick gets here. Hey Dick, when are you getting here.  ??? ;)   Pat

I'm glad to hear that Tom is doing well and will be able to make it some.  I have a question or two for him.

question for y'all. started packing this am and trying to figure out what to take along.
specifically osage and other staves... they are much to heavy just to haul up to pat's then back home. however if someone is interested in doing some stave trading I'll haul them up.

I have one walnut, one Elm, One Hickory, and quite a few osage 1/2 logs or 1/4s that I might be interested in trading. a couple of the 1/2 logs I think if you have a band saw you could get 2 bows out of them. also have a couple that will be a real challange.... either really snaky or knotty or holey.

anyone interested? dont want to haul them up and back if no one is. Was just planning on bringing 3 one of which I was going to work on.
let me know.

Hey Wade, I might be interested in that elm if no one else has spoke for it. I don't know what I have to trade for it. I have a couple of osage staves also or some leather that would be good for putting on bow handles etc.
Pat, I'm bringing some venison with me. I got to looking through the freezer and I had more meat than I thought. I 'll bring a couple of small roasts and some tenderloin. :)

Well, we had a fabulous weekend. Thanks to all you guys for helping me slip into another year. WE had some bow building, heat treating and knapping rock, primitive cordage making and fire starting with a hand drill plus a bit of rain dodging, eating, drinking and prestidigitation. 8)
Here are a few pics I took...the fire pit under the blue tarp is where some different rocks were heat treated over the weekend. I dug the pit a few days earlier but we,  started a fire in the pit to dry out the soil, then lined the bottom with flat stones as reflectors, added a few bags of sand then a layer or rock, more sand and started the fire. We cooked the rock Friday night and let the fire slowly cool down. It was Sunday morning before the pit was cool enough to remove the rock. Its amazing to see the changes in these rocks after heat treating. I'm not a knapper but I'm sure someone else will explain the process and changes.
A few bows were started and worked on. Mole will have plenty of work to do to get the boo backed ipe bow where it well bend.  I think he likes them strong but I believe he will have to remove more ipe from the belly to get his bow down to the "strong" stage! ;D
 Enjoy.....

Man, that looked like fur. Nice set up you have there Pat.  If I tried to have an open workshop like that here in WA in the winter I would  be freezing or the hammers and tools would flight out the door during a wind storm. Though you must have to batten things down during the Hurricane season!
