Yeah, I'm a Hendrix nut. This is my first snake bow. I got the stave (not made from billets) on a visit to Casa de' Yazoo back in February. I got it nearly finished at the Classic, but not quite. It is 64" NTN, 1.5" wide from fade to mid-limb, then tapering to 3/8 at the nocks. It is 55# at 29.5 inches. The backing is Western DB. The tip overlays are from elk sheds I found in Wyoming in 1995. I have whiter, prettier antler around, but I really wanted to use these. The handle wrap is made from scrap from my Dad's chaps. He was a true biker and loved it like I love trad/primitive archery. The lacing is hemp, with the tag ends adorned with deer antler tips from a buck I killed in 2005, and a rattle from a canebreak my Dad killed in 1998.
As if all that wasn't enough mojo, Ryano helped me learn the rounded belly style, Sawfiler helped me learn the narrow tips style (though not as narrow as his :o), GregB helped with layout, my good buddy Ethan Roderigue of Okeena Longbows lent hand to the skinning, Gary Davis supplied dacron and good conversation while I twisted the string, and of course Pappy provided the venue and good will. ;D
Hence, a name heavy with mojo.
The smearing on the name signature was done on purpose-accidentally. ;) I use gel ink and acetone as an erasor, so I can easily wipe off and re-write anything. I accidentally smeared the name before clearing over and thought it made a really cool effect, given the nature and name of the bow. So I touched up the lettering and left the smear. I really like it. I also left the check below the hanlde on purpose. I thought about filling it in with sawdust and superglue, but decided it makes a great beauty mark. ;D

Now that is one beautiful bow :)!
All that good mojo and a name the late-great Hendrix would be proud of- it HAS to be a good bow :D!
-
Bear, she turned out even more stunning that I thought she would. You done an awesome job finishing it out, and the tiller is dead on. ;)
Beautiful, just beautiful!

A classic "snake," there is no doubt. Excellent craftsmanship. Well done.
-
Sweet curvey bow and very nicely dressed. If it shoots as good as it looks, you've got a winner.

Great bow. All those curves make me think of a 6----or maybe a 9. Rock on!
-
COOL!

I look at all the bows put up on here and certain things about all of them catch my eye, however subtle they may be. There are several things about that bow that catch my eye, and few are very subtle! Very nice indeed. The tip work is excellent, the tiller looks dead nuts to me, but the one thing about it that really got me was the way you inked the named and smeared it.... Way cool.Great theme work. ;)
-
Wow, great job all around. Congratulations on a beautiful bow.
-
Thats just an all-around amazing bow. The signature is cool :)
-
Alex, that came out great. I told you there was nothing to it.... ;)

Wow that is a beautiful bow. The handle work is awesome, as are the tips. Really fine work, job well done.

Quit while your ahead, and take up another hobby! Gary Davis had a hand in that poison, yuk, good shootin, Steve.
-
I love snake bows and this one is tops! 8)
-
damn!! thats cool.
-
Forgot to mention how it shoots before.
Not that anyone shooting wood bows is too hung up on it, but she chrono's 161 fps with a 475 gr arrow. I thought my test arrows were 550, glad I checked. I'm not real sure, but I think this still pretty good. No hand shock. I've had plenty of glass bows that didnt draw as smooth or shoot as dead-in-hand.

i realy like this bow. very well done.

Beautifully done! That is one fine work of art.

Very sweet character bow Alex. You just reminded me why I like snaky character bows so much. In my opinion they deserve to be in a class all on there own. Great work and attention to detail. Congratulations. Keenan

Bear, you definitely went all out in making that snakey stave into the best bow it could be! Very nicely done in all regards!
-
Gotta go with the flow on this one she's a work of art Bear :) Well done eh
-
Really nice Alex. The handle, tips, skin job, and tiller are all first rate.
-
Fine work of art that shoots, too. I've not been too big on squared off fades on a self bow but the way you incorporated them in the whole package works great.
-
Whew - you've scored on this one. BOM voting is coming up.
-
Thanks everyone.
Don, how could I forget?! My good friend Don Wilson even added some mojo by hanging out with me while I worked the tips. He held and gaurded the opposite end of the bow while I worked the tips. Sometimes when it's crowded under the shed at Twin Oaks I get worried someone is going to careen into my bow and break it off in the vise. I think weve all seen close calls on the band saw, that way.
Funny how we change. When I started doing this all I wanted was to be able to build a bow all on my own. Now that I'm getting more confidednt that I can I appreciate having my friends involvment. Actually got to make some new friends on this one.

Green Acres is the place for me!
Country livin is the life I lead!
If I ever get to play it again, I'm doing Hillbilly's version!

Lots of medicine in that bow and perfect in every way. I really like every thing about it. Can't wait for B.O.M. voting. Oh and it makes me want to dig out a hendricks record. Kenneth

Thanks again everyone. I actually got to put it through the paces at the TBG North Zone shoot this weekend. I am very happy with it. And by happy, I mean confident. It's nice to finally have a self made bow that is a pleasure to shoot, and I know will put them where I'm looking. I was happy with the esthetics, but that shooting confidence is what I was really holding my breath for.
Thanks again for all the nice words.
