Title: heat straightening tools
Post by: loon on April 10, 2016, 02:31:49 am
I want to make a tool like the ones shown at the top here

http://www.primitiveways.com/arrow_straightening.html

Has anyone used this sort of tool? Does it make it much easier than just doing it by hand with a towel or gloves? (for cane, specifically..)

Maybe I should just buy some soapstone at a craft store or something. Are there any good alternatives? Maybe clay, though the heat capacity would be much less I think. I could maybe put some sort of burner or something under a clay tool with that shape.

i don't know how much this will help but here's what i use.
its based on the one used in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_5Ha1qyFDo&nohtml5=False which  everyone on this forum should watch once or twice or maybe twelve times ;D

just a quick aside my tool is made for a lefty. and the wood is HHB. you should use something that is diffuse porous wood like maple or sycamore, sycamore and HHB also have interlocked grain making them even better for this type of tool ;)

Nice, I tried to make one out of antler but it's so hard to carve out... feel like hammer and chisel would work well, though. with a stable vise...

Made mine from hunk of osage.

Mines out of Ocean Spray. I made the slot at a shallower angle so I can use it with one hand like the old Japanese fella in the video. The hole is for sharper bends(nodes). I put the traditional aluminum >:D wheel in it to do minor bends. That part doesn't seem to work very well.

Thank you
Does it really have to be tough or can it just be some random fallen branch, pine or something?

I made my first from a poplar branch and it lasted for at least 2 dozen shafts.

Possibly ok. At the least you'll learn how better to make the next one.

Like yours, DC. May give that a go.

Really hoping I can eventually find some Ocean Spray here in Southern California...

I think tougher is better. Splitting that tab off the end is a real possibility. That said they're not that tough to make so use what you got.

Even with nothing more than a few trash knives, a Shinto rasp and a few stones?  :P
Thinking I should get some chisels... and just use them with a hammerstone. Should i get a masonry or wood chisel for cutting antler?
The Korean arrow straightening tool seems slightly different from the japanese one...

Cutting that notch without a drill could be a real chore. A rat tailed file I guess. Or the edge of a piece of sandstone. It's fun trying to figure out how they did things. It looks impossible but you know they did it. I guess once you stomach was full you had nothing but time.

...this old insulator works well for straightening arrow shafts...

Ah, that one looks nice, I could cut most of the groove with my rasp.. thanks Pat

Hey Pat, that block to the far right, is that for putting grooves in the shafts?

Aaron, yes. It has a drywall screw with its point ground to a blade.

Made a tool out of a fallen branch. The wood seems okay but, the branch being old and dead, it's full of cracks and makes a creaking noise when I use it.

made most of the "main" groove with a rasp, then the diagonal grooves with a knife.

When I try to straighten a cane at the node, it just makes a kink next to the node... and the canes cool down too quick for my liking.

Are you getting the kink using this particular tool? If so you should make the diagonal grooves longer and smooth like baby's bum. Use a rat tail file if you got one. The noises are probably just the cane creaking against the tool. You shouldn't have to really crank on it, just mild little squeezes.

I only use a straightener on drastic bends. Otherwise I use my hands, with and without heat.

Yeah, it was a pretty extreme bend

Mine is the "hoop" kind. it was made from a split off of a chunk of pine firewood. It was the wood surrounding a knothole. By not severing the grain in any way it is pretty tough for pine. I typically slide it along the shaft rather quickly with steady medium pressure. Doing it this way I generate my own heat. The inner ring of my tool is blackened with singe marks. It being pine, will start to singe before the arrow wood. When I smell burn pine I know to stop.
