budlight bottles seem to be really fragile and break easily. snaple has a flat center and what seems like a seperate sheet of glass where flakes like to dig in and step. The best bottles ive tried so far have come from the green perrier mineral waters.
what has your guys experience with different bottle bottoms been like?
-
The Green Odools seems to stay consistant. Budlight Platinum seems lighter, more plastic and eaisier to breakage. Haven't had any bad luck with brown bottles.
-
it seems like its all the domestic bottles that have the issues, imports seem to be better quality.
-
better contents too.......... ;D

I like the old 1 gallon Clorox bleach bottles when I can find one.

ive never even seen one before eddie lol

Funny, the imports I like to drink have crappy bottles for knapping.
Here is a list of my favorites:
Pickle Jar - 1 gallon
Riesling Wine Blue Bottle - .75 liter or 25 oz.
Perrier Green Bottle - .75 liter or 25 oz.
Beer Brown Bottle, Large - 22 oz.
Beer Brown Bottle, Growler - 64 oz.
-
i might have to go buy some pickles lol. my sister is pregnant, maybe ill buy her a jar too. and peanut butter ofcourse.
-
;D

I get most of my bottle bottoms from walking in creeks. Generally nature takes care of the rest of the bottle for you and the bottom is left behind. You would be amazed at how distributed trash can be in a watershed. I have found two of those clorox bottles that way and they are a treat to knap.

I'll post a picture tomorrow. You must be a young'n. ;)
-
I'm 53 and don't recall ever seeing a Chlorox bottle. Never thought about trying some of the jar bottoms. Biggest frustration I've found is getting the right size nail for the bottle! Too small and you get tiny shards, too big and you bust the bottom to smithereens!
-
I'm not a fan of the nail technique, half the time it works, other half only gives you half the bottom. I've always gotten whole bottoms when I break the bottles with a hammer at the neck.
-
For Clorox bottles, just do a search on ebay for "vintage clorox bottle". You'll see quite a few for sale.
-
Those old Clorox bottles bring $10-$30 at auctions and flea markets round here.... I aint breakin em up, lol... I do have a couple glass 1gallon milk jugs i aint figured out the best way to break yet..5 thick usable side on them... Brian
-
I used a nail once. Forget it. Now use a cheap glass cutter just to etch the glass and a hobbist torch t to go over the etch and that heat fractures all the way through. Sometimes the crack needs just a little tap to separate the glass. This technic works extremely well on square liquor bottles.

No kidding? I've got a perfect 1 gallon bottle and know where there is a pick-up truck load more in a ravine in the woods near here. :o
-
Lol.... Poeple go nuts over just about any colored glass...not sure why 8)
-
Better pick 'em up, Eddie, before someone puts them on ebay and makes a tidy batch of cash.
-
lets see...
#1- the nameless blue bottles I find hiking. very strong, easy to flake, and beautiful.
#2. Ale 8 bottles(green glass)-Not nearly as strong, but harder to flake and more durable.
#3-clear 4 sided glass wine or some other drink bottles(I don't care what b/c I don't drink it ;))- beautiful for knives, and really sharp... flakes very well!
I can get an almost unlimited amount of bottle bottoms from hiking and my neighbor(he makes beer, and gives me his reject bottles)- flatter bottoms aren't always better IMO.
-
brandy bottles work good too, but don't get near my growler , $3.00 refills at the brewery
-
Flungonin, when you say hobbyist torch do you mean the small Butane torches? Or the bigger propane ones? Or something else? You're method sounds better than the nails I've been working with!
-
The small Butane torch. I have used the other butane bottle that Wal-Mart sells that is used on caming stoves. Either of the butane torches works. Just put the flame on the etched glass and follow the etch.
-
Have you guys tried to cut the bottle with string and fire? I have never tried this I just watched this one. Ed

Or how about the bar trick where you have beer ( water please ) in the bottle almost full, then slam your palm forcefully onto the mouth opening. That sends a pressure wave to the bottom where it just pops off clean as can be.

i havent tried that one before, ill give it a try.

have a lot of luck with a nail on bigger bottles I use a small lag bolt, I put the bottle in a plastic bag so when the bottom pops off it doesn't hit the ground, didn't take long to figure that out ::), bub

The bar trick I was referring too...
-
My diamond saw cuts them like butter. :D
-
Now thats not very primitive Mullet...
-
Sleek, I was very doubtful about that trick until I saw it. I wonder if the bottom remained intact.
-
I did it once. Bottom came off very clean. Broke when it hit the sink.
-
Patrick, that's a dang good Reisling.
-
Sleek, interesting...
Don, yep, good stuff. But I only drink a half glass and chuck the rest. I like the bottle better.
