Stacey and I took a drive into Montana today about six miles from the house,we were going after snowshoe hares with our bows. about fifty feet from the jeep we cut fresh lion tracks in about a foot of fresh snow. We decided to track the cat for fun and took off after it, about an hour later I spotted the cat crossing a clearing and tried to get ahead of it across the ridge. The cats tracks went through heavy timber and under a big fir tree. Stacey had circled around to get in front of the cat.. I was about ten feet from the cat when I noticed him lying on a branch above me. we had an argument about who was the prey and he retreated farther up the tree. I yelled for Stacey who was coming up the creek bottom and told her I had the cat treed. she took these pics for fun ... lion season is open but we didn't have a tag so let him go and just got pics.. what a fun day of Bunny hunting.. LOL hope you all enjoy. Hawk

awesome Hawk... I wouldn't have had the heart to shoot him, they are so rare here I have only seen one in the wild and it was crossing the road. Those are some awesome pics though. :) -josh

That IS very cool!!! Good on ya Mike. And obviously an ethical hunter to have one in your sights and a bow in hand and not take the shot. I'm going to see if I can try for one this year. I have a buddy who called one in and it's on video. Free Grass and No Fences by Zepps Predator Calls.
Josh, what state are you in?
-
Alabama
-
weve got them here in mn. and they finaly admitted it after a drvier killed one with his car
he took it and had photoed by the local paper then contcated the dnr.
i hope they open a season, would love to get the chance for one.
just think of the cool bow sock you could make from the tail skin >:D
-
Sweet ! Who needs a dog when you got Mike around ! I'm really surprised it treed up with just you walking behind it.
-
Ryano, there were four different cats in the area.. one female with two two year old cubs hanging around.. this guy was seeing me as prey, he has been competing for food believe... and was sick of being picked on.. LOL
-
Only the Hustons would push those cats in a foot of snow with just the reward of seeing one of them and a few pictures! The first time I saw where the big tom had circled back across my tracks I would have been out of there!! Although I think that big ole cat realized that Hawk would have been poor chewin being as how there would be nothing but rancid ole mountain whang leather and sinue to eat. Now why he passed on Stacey I don"t know, maybe fear?? Joe

That's really cool of you to share with us beautiful animal. Thanks
-
Man wish Stacey would have had a tag, then she could've stuck it with her new bow :)
-
Cool pictures and I think you are right Joe. ;) :)
Pappy

Dana.. she would have been slinging arrows like the sioux at Custers last screwup..if she had a tag..
Watcher.. you are right even lions have tastebuds, but you have done the same thing ;D chasing cats just for fun..
thanks Cracker, pappy, sailordad, josh, NTD, Ryano... good times brothers of the bow.. makes me feel blessed to be alive and have such opportunity when one of these encounters comes along!
-
The cat is far larger than it looks in the pics, camera angle makes it look far away.. but the cool thing is that he is missing a big part of his tail. Wonder how he lost it!
-
Probably has a wife Mike ;) :o :D
-
Big medicine eh? very cool
-
Way cool Mike, Thanks for sharing. ;)

Wow, you really took hold of my interest with this one. I've been day-dreaming about what that would have been like for the last 40 minutes! Spectacular!
Hey hawk, I know loins are sensitive but tastebuds?! ;D >:D Sorry couldn't resist, that one was just too good.

You want to see a big Garfield? Go stomp around Deep Lake in Big Cypress. I came across two very fresh sets of panther tracks last time I was there. Fresh enough to make me look over my shoulder every once in a while and reminded me that there are bigger and badder thing than me out there. Kind of creepy in grass tall and thick enough to hide a cat 5-6 foot away from you. Saw two sets of black bear tracks and some coyote tracks as well.

This kitty actually backtracked twice.. once he crossed over our tracks ... and the second time he went through some trees and doubled back, He was waiting on a limb about ten feet up when our eyes met.. so cool to encounter a fellow predator and feel the BIG MEDICINE in the forest... If a cat wanted to nail a human there would be no real contest... Just a body and a blood trail when the cat god done with the hunt... I am always amazed that a 130-200 pound mountain lion can take down a 700 to 1000 pound elk with ease.what great and stealthy hunters!

Parnell... LOLOL.. Loins.. I went and changed it to lions.. Heeeee ;D

Nice kitty Mike, you wouldn't want to shoot him until he grew up though. I have been chasing and calling lions since I was a teenager and have yet to shoot one, nothing but pictures so far. After 20 years of waiting he is going to have to be big for me to shoot.
There is an article in one of the PA back issues about by a guy who walked down and shot a lion with a bow. It was a great article that everyone should go back and read.
-
thanks Justin.. I hear you.. I have treed many cats and only shot one.. they are cool to see and fun to try and catch, but killing one it has to be the right cat at the right time... Stacey on the other hand would have made meat and a new quiver and bowcase if she would have had a tag...LOL i will look up the cat article.. what issue ?
-
I wish I could remember, Ill try to find it.
-
That's cool Mike! They say theirs some of em around here and I believe they are but have never seen one.
-
Very cool - congrats on an awesome encounter!
-
about ten years ago i saw one dead on the side of the highway here in texas, between emory and mineola. i wouldnt have believed it myself. i thought it was a dog, but it had that extra long tail, i knew exactly what it was

Hawk: We have had a lion hanging around for some time now and he killed a deer next to the neighbor's house and hauled it up a tree to eat. Never knew that they would do that. The neighbor has little kids so that are packing! Lots of cats this year! Joe
-
I think you should get a license and lets go see if we can get you a new quiver and bowcase.. LOL
-
MMMmmmm....Good eatin!!!!!!
