Not alot of pirmitive exclusive groups around, but plenty of traditional archery groups around. Make a plan to go to the MTB Jamboree next weekend in Grayling, and The Stick Bow shoot weekend in Elm Hall in August. You will find plenty of self bowyers to chat with at both. I will be at both, look me up. Im 6' 1", 210 lbs and have a short beard and a round head! Im 38...........ish. Odds are I will have an osage or hackberry bow in my hands and a back quiver with all white feathers and ruby nocks.
-
PD, not headed to Compton down in Berrien Springs this weekend?
Whats the info on the MTB Jamboree?
-
I will be at Comptons this weekend ! Don't think I will make it to grayling, I went to Hastings longbow shoot last year and will probably go again this year. I need to check out the Elm hall shoot.
I am a Compton & MI longbow assc. Member. Looking to get into self bows, hopefully there will be some stuff for me to see at Comptons, last year I was like a little kid taking it all in and I must admit my attention was not on selfbows, this year it will be !

Dan:
My friend Marty and myself teach a selfbow class every Tuesday evening in Perry, MI. Don't know if you're near there. Really, its a hands-on place to build bows. We offer advise, have wood and tools. The advise, use of tools, steam setup, workbench are free. We are going to have our portable setup at the Elm Hall shoot. Come with a piece or two of something to work on and hopefully, you'll shoot an arrow through it while we're there. If you already know how to make a selfbow, stop by anyways. We'll be the duo with the bandsaw.

Marty, I believe I met you guys at the other shoot/rondy a month or so back...you were hording the glue for billets (that is now discontinued) and you folks had a steamer and a couple vises set up. I was watching with my small, skinny blonde kid ;D Gary Davis showed up with some Osage and a Yew blank and it got busy so we didn't stick around too long.
-
Yes Lee, that was us at Marshall. Marty was the big guy, I (Matt) was the small guy. My old motorhome was on the corner right near the bow building tent. If you're going to Elm Hall, stop by and re-introduce yourself. I can't make the GLLI shoot, bummer. I have to work that whole weekend.
-
OK, I did speak with you shortly, I think you had a kids Holmie or Molly on the vise at the time. spoke with your wife at the camper too. I am planning being at Elm Hall so I'll bring a stave or two to mess with and stop in and say hello.

Lee: I posted that "kids" Holmie in the Bow section. I finished it.
-
Cool, i'll check it out!

Matt, I would like to make it up to that class sometime myself. How many classes does it take to finish a bow? I always thought it would be a good idea for a new Primitive Archery club in Michigan, to focus on making an hunting with your own home made equipment. I am surprised no one has started one yet.

What about a MIJAM? I have thought about that for a longggg time. Michigans own bow building weekend.
-

The Elm Hall club would make for a nice central locale??????????????????
-
I agree, not too far from the MI/IN border and 1/2 way to the Bridge (the Yoopers will just have to suck it up and drive a little further like usual) >:D
Who "owns" or runs that facility, do you know?
-
The MIJAM idea would be great. I did enjoy the Marshall shoot and plan on spending the weekend next year. I heard that the Pine River Rec club is good about allowing groups to rent the property out. This would be great for next year.
-
Come on down to Marshall on Memorial weekend !
We spend most of our time working on bows!
With the new pavilion up we may not even stop for sleeping ?
Guy

MIJAM sounds real cool! I'll bet the Elm Hall guys would entertain the idea. I could run it past Brent if you'd like?
And yes, the Marshall shoot is gaining back some ground. I'll be there for certain.
-
that sounds great Matt...what time of the year are you guys thinking would make the most sense and not compete with hunting seasons or major family holidays? I'd be up for helping out...
-
It's been a little while since the last post. Any news about the possible organization of MIJAM.
Tom
-
I have not heard any news as yet so I have my doubts it will happen this next year .
Maybe we can all get together at Marshall and talk it over for another time ,or just do it there !
Hope to see ya then ,I usually get there Thur. night !

Funny you should mention this. I was just talking to the "little woman" about the topic. To pull something off like that, I don't think that we'd be able to do it this year. I was telling her though, that I would try to get some of you MI guys together either at Kalamazoo or Marshall to throw out some ideas. Marshall would probably be the better place. Maybe it was the WAJAM article in the new PA magazine that got me thinking about it again.
So with that, plan on going to Marshall on Memorial Weekend, if at all possible: Slikkers, Watson, Drums, Guy. Let's gather around the campfire and throw out some ideas.

I'll try to be at Kazoo on Sat. AM. but you know I'm at Marshall all weekend !!!
I realise I'm not from Mi but I consider Marshall as my home event ! So I would love to help out with plans or whatever you think you could use !
See ya soon .

I'll be at K-ZOO for sure. I am on the MTB council and our meeting is on Saturday morning. I can be seen around the membership booth afterwards. I am a rookie at bow building and I am looking at getting a start this year at Marshall. I plan on making it for the weekend is all goes well. I have a self-bow from Mr. Dick Carrigan that may be on its last leg (splintered back). So I am not sure if I will have one to shoot. This means I have to get busy building one.

Tom: Plan on sitting under the pavillion at Marshall for sure. In a couple of days, you should be shooting arrows out of your new selfbow.
See you then!
-
I can't wait. I am looking forward to it.

Its only the 2nd of Dec. and you folks are getting me all fired up to go allready !
How am I supposed to wait till May 24th now !!
I gotta get my mind off this somehow !!
-
I'd still love to help in putting something like together this coming year...have a few challanges at the moment, likely loosing our house but possibly after we find some new digs and get settled I could be of more help here.
Would love to see something like this put together though...
-
Hey don't forget your exodused michigan brother over here in pennsylvania ...you know you can count me in.
Matt if your gonne be at martys when I come up in january, chris(pearl drums)will be there too and maybe some more ideas could be discussed to get and keep the ball rolling and so it doesn't fall to the wayside. ;)
-
I'll see you at Marty's! ;)
-
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!!! ;D.....a bowmaking party it'll be ;).......and yew know what ill be bringing with me too ;)
-
I have a very good source for affordable screen printing and few very cool places that would allow us to set up, camp and enjoy. I will start a Word document with all my ideas and we can toss them all together when we meet and see what we come up with. I dont think it will be a grand undertaking, more of a work in progress getting better each year.
-
All this talk has me almost giddy already 8) I'll what I can to help pull this together and coordinate things so drop me PM's or emails and I'll stay in touch with all you guys.
Cool stuff!!!
I assume there will be bow making, arrow making, flint knapping, etc going on at this 1st Annual MIJAM?

Thinking about this. Isn't the idea of MIJam basically the same thing as the Marshal Primitive shoot. Shouldn't we just promote Marshal and try to increase the numbers that attend this shoot. It seemed like they had everything there when my wife and I went. Couldn't this just be promoted as MIJam? No planning required, just change the name and were good to go. I saw plenty of bow building and knapping going on the one day that I was there. ;D

Tom
I think you have a legitimate question there !
If anyone wants to respond to it please do it though a PM to me first so we don't put any negativity on either event here .
I am just trying to keep PA a positive place!
Thanks
Guy

To an extent your probably right Tom. However, isnt Grayling similar to Elm Hall and isnt Elm Hall similar to GLLI? And so on. More is always better. Thsi coudl give folks two chances at making an event rather than just one in Marshall. Maybe the two events could share mailing lists and make both grow as a result?
-
Why not have another? sounds good to me.
Tom
-
Just how many events are you going to go to in a year ?!!
