Alright folks, I just couldn't wait any longer. Besides, the labs and the beagle were showing too much interest in the package. My secret Santa is M. Ostrenga(venisonburger), and what a good Santa he is! I told the wife and kids that I must have a long lost twin in Michigan because the awesome arrows w/ purple fletching and the venison jerky are exactly my tastes, literally. Thank you very much!

Here's the gift I received from Sailordad. My first hickory bow. The tiller is spot on and the contrast between the woods are very nice. It flings an arra purty good too. With all the hickory I have around here I can't believe I haven't made me one of these yet. Thank you Tim.
I haven't put it on a scale yet, but it feels like around 40-45lbs. The woods on the handle are Osage and Leopardwood. Enjoy.

YAY!!!  Finally my christmas gift came  ;D                                                                                  When I came home from school today I had a present waiting for me. When I hurridly opened it I found a BEAUTIFUL knife made by Ronnie Coursey. Not to mention some very knappable obsidian with it.
So with a sheath I now have a hugely fasionable hunting knife ;D ;D ;D

A really nice set of arrows from Cora Knight in Hickory NC.. Thanks much cora!!! I will be putting these to good use.
These are river cane, self nock, hand painted and a really nice matching set of what looks like goose feathers on em. sinew wrapped.

Havnt had a chance to shoot em yet as she left the head option up to me. But it is the straightest set of cane arra's I ever saw...

john, the scales are cocobola with heartwood and sapwood.  the holes in the sapwood were made by worms, i think they add a little character to a knife.  wish i had more of that wood.  the steel is 154CM.  imo, one of the best knife steels out there.

Well I got sent Home Early today....so I could come back at 7 tonight to start working Nights on an Emergency Job....so I swung by the Post Office on the way Home....and there was a Package from Mark Baggett......So I could hardly wait to get Home to Open It Up!! I got as far as the Garage and a Box Knife.....and peeled it open to find the Hawk that Pappy made back in November....It's a little Bodark Handled Flint Hawk with Deer Rawhide Lacing and Coyote Canines ..... Turkey Spurs ....and Deer Antler Tips on the Rawhide Lanyard...and a Turkey Beard on the Top....and Pappy Says that all of these were from Hunts of His....so this Hawk has ("manidooke") Strong Spiritual Powers...and will be carried with Me in My Bandolier Bag on all Hunts as a Talisman of good Luck.....Thank You pappy!

And Dana....You will have to wait a Bit for the High Resolution Picture....I have a Good One in Mind!!!

OK.  I finally got a couple of pics for ya.  Here is madcrowjr with his new osage bow.  Dyed brown with a cord wrapped handle and some really skinny tips.  I almost swallowed my dip when he opened it up.  It flings arras real good.

Here is one after his first shot, you can see the bow a little better.

Got home tonight and found a long cardboard tube on the porch from Hickoryswitch. Inside was an awesome bow, looks to be rawhide backed hickory from what I can tell in the dark-Great looking, great feeling bow, I can't wait to get out and shoot it this weekend. Also a nice antler/copper pressure flaker that will get put to good use. I'll get some pics up as soon as I can get home in the daylight.

I got my gift in the mail a couple of days ago, but have been to busy to post it till now. It is from Kyle McCabe. The blade is from bandsaw blade stock his brother traded with Venisonburger, and is very sharp. The outside lamination on the handle is osage from a stave his brother traded with PatB. The inner lam is Cherry and was Kyle's. My pics dont do it any justice. Thanks Kyle. Joel

I got a large tube in the mail today. :)

My gift was from Skeaterbait. It is a nice Osage bow.
It turns out, this bow is special because it is the first Osage bow Lonnie made, and came from the first tree that he found, cut, and led all the way to completion.
This is a nice gesture, and a great bow.

Lonnie, it does shoot well. Maybe I'll give chase to a deer or two with it some this fall. :)

I’m glad Patrick likes the atlatl, and don’t worry about the spear. Stuff breaks.

That is a really heavy atlatl. I based it on the Great Basin weapon, and this was my first time working with soapstone, which I got from a guy out in Angels Camp, California (where Mark Twain wrote about leaping frogs). The wood is Osage, and the bone I made the hook from came from Dave’s Soda and Pet City (they sell soda and pet supplies, weird eh?). I almost couldn’t bear to part with it. :)

Its a really nice neck knife and cool necklace.  They both have good medicine.

I really like them and the sheath is the coolest one I have seen.  Magnets are used to keep the blade in and there is a really awesome deer imprint on it.  Pictures should be up tonite

My gift went out a day or so early OOps. But it has been recieved , still no pics yet.
I might have to start hiding in the bushes to watch for the mailman. I think they are keeping it from me as punishment for giving them fruitcake for Christmas, I usually give them some homeade moonshine or wine  :o

I got a long package from 1/2 primitive today.  It contained a very nice short osage D bow.  I think I did swallow my dip on this one.  I will get some pics in the morning.  I found out I was stalking the wrong person.  I had been watching the mail, but it came by UPS.  Tricky.  Sean, you did a great job on this.

I just went to the post office and guess what, I had a tube from Jesse-S. I could not believe the gift inside. As I opened the tube and unwrapped the gift with shaking hands was a beautiful bow. Jesse said the stave came from the the Upper Peninsula in Michigan, It was sent to Jesse by Dana.Pappy then helped lay it out in Tennessee and then it took the rest of the year to build.

The bow is hard maple with ebony overlays. The string is fastflight padded in the loops with 350 Dacron. The brace height is 6 inches 28 inch draw and 54 lbs.

Jesse I couldn't be more happy or proud to own such a beautiful bow. Sorry I can't post the pics, but I can't seem to get photo bucket to work. I will e-mail the pics to Dana and maybe he can put them on for me.

Thanks again Jesse

OK.  Here are a few pics.  We took the new bows stumpin this evening.  They both shoot great.

He was either praying that he makes the shot, or trying to nock the arrow.

Aiming for stump #1.  #2 is just to the left of the feathers in the quiver.  He nailed both.

Madcrowjrs' second hit in a row from 18 yards.  Sorry the pic is so dark.  The arrow was dead center in the stump.

how everything is frozen solid.

Thanks Marius and glad ya like em - that second picture just made my day hehehe ;D. Lemme see here hmm - those two obsidian's are made of material from Dtiller, the one fairly biggun with swirls in it is Alibates material from El Destructo, the big ole white one is novaculite, blue blade is slag glass, and the rest are Pederanales flint from my travels.
I meant to send ya a neat dozen but found one on my bed that perfectly matched with the comforter - oops :).

otoe bow- I didnt make the string its artificial sinew.
as for the flies-my favorite one is the pheasant matuka.  there are 2 soft hackle,a good old adams dry, and a size 2 crawdad.  Its a chenille body with squirrel claws with a laquered turkey quill over it ribbed with copper wire.
I could post the recipe to all of them if you'd like

Just got a chance to post the gift Tommy sent me for the x-mass trade. Its a wonderful hand made knife. I think the blade is stainless steal to boot and it holds a real good edge. I think I will be getting a lot of use out of it!

Thanks again Tommy! (Woodsman1031)

PS: Man I look pretty bad in those picks!  :o

I have been keeping my arrows stuck in the ground beside me when I shoot. The leather matches the leather on the bow watterlogged made for me.

  Thanks a Milliion!

Ive never used this style quiver before and after playing around with it a little I realize it works better than great for shooting if its worn hanging sort of on the side with the knocks forward. Its really easy to get arrows out, it stays out of the way when shooting and the arrows dont fall out no matter what. Did I mention I love this quiver ;D

Here are some photos of the amazing arrows that Steve Parker ("Hillbilly") made for me. I was stunned when I came home from out of town and they were waiting for me. These are absolutely beautiful in every way. The shafts are Sasa palmata bamboo, which he acquired locally. The tips are really very cool, and I have not seen this kind before. Little John, a PA member, made them. The knocks are self knocks, and Hillbilly did a great job sinewing the feathers to the shaft. He signed them, which was a nice touch too.

I am really so proud to have these in my quiver, and are the nicest arrows I have. I actually think I will a bit nervsous using them, as I dont want to break or loose any of these.

My photos do not do these arrows justice.

Glad you like 'em, Dane. You don't have to worry much about breaking those cane arrows, they still lose just as easy as the wooden ones, though.  ;D They're made to shoot. :)

Finally got a chance to take a pic of mine, this is a awesome rawhide-backed hickory bow from Hickoryswitch. I've flung quite a few arrows with it so far, and it shoots great-quiet, fast, and accurate. In short, I love it, great bow! He also sent a nice pressure-flaker made from a deer antler, so it has copper and antler tips both. I've already gotten some good use out of it, works great. Thanks again, Hickoryswitch!

Finally got some time with the camera and computer.  Here is the quiver that Mini-Calendar Girl sent to me.  I love it.  Up till now I've carried my stump shooters in my hip pocket.  This will come in really handy.

Mini-C also sent me a great little clip on folding knife sheath.  Picture of that will have to wait. I left it at work on my desk.   >:(

Thanks so much.

I don't know how recently we've done this, but again, thanks to Dana for all the hard work and the thought of this in the first place. I know working full time like we all do that it's hard some days to get home and think of the computer, but he takes care of the posts, the pictures, ect.  Ya know, people come up with these great ideas but aren't willing to follow through with them, I'm guessing it's a big job. So THANKS!!! Dana.

Title: Re: 2nd Annual Christmas Trade Pictures
Post by: DanaM on January 28, 2009, 07:58:06 am
Thanks for the kind words VB, for the most part its not that much work. I guess my only complaint is having to nag some
of ya to get your pictures up and to e-mail me a high resolution picture :o Its the end of January now and this should be wrapped up,
so please if you have posted a picture yet do so and e-mail a nice picture suitable for publication in the magazine

One other thing if you are unable to meet your commitment then let me know and I will figure something out. Everyone who participated
in the Christmas Trade deserves to receive a gift in return. I take full responsibility for this and will make sure everyone receives a gift.

Thanks to all of you who participated this year, its all of you folks that make this something special :) I just do the footwork :D

Hey, how about a suggestion for next year, Dana. What if there is a time limit to let you know that your gift is finished. When you here from everyone that they are done, then you pick and match the names? That way nobody get's left out when someone doesn't follow through with their end.
They are doing this on Tradgang with the knife trade for the same reason.

Quwestion.  How can you make a bow for somebody if you have not drawn the name and know their specs?  We could wind up with too many bows the wrong draw length or weight. ??? ??? ???  Sorry, I get confused easy.
Title: Re: 2nd Annual Christmas Trade Pictures
Post by: nugget on January 28, 2009, 01:41:01 pm
Do like they would on a bow trade. Make set weight and dimensions for the bows. Standard 28" draw and a set poundage of 50#
Just my opinion.
TJ
Title: Re: 2nd Annual Christmas Trade Pictures
Post by: JackCrafty on January 28, 2009, 07:35:52 pm
I don't know how recently we've done this, but again, thanks to Dana for all the hard work and the thought of this in the first place.

Yes, thanks Dana.

Madcrow has a good point.  I guess we could either eliminate bows as a gift, or we could allow people to make "back-up" gifts in case someone gets left out.

Or we could send handmade "archery gift cards" with cash inside. ;D
Title: Re: 2nd Annual Christmas Trade Pictures
Post by: mullet on January 28, 2009, 10:53:40 pm
If you get a bow you can't shoot, trade it, give it to a friend that you want to corrupt, lift weights or stretch your arms. But it does , really blow when everybody post pictures of all the great stuff everybody got  and one or two people stiff somebody. Then you have really nice people, that took this  in the fun, giving, spirit this was meant to be, scrambling to make it right for everybody. It's not right, and I thought it would help make it a FUN tradition that Dana started and take out some of the stress for Dana and everybody involved.

Just a thought I had after seeing it on Tradgang.
Title: Re: 2nd Annual Christmas Trade Pictures
Post by: DanaM on January 29, 2009, 07:52:56 am
Guess I will weigh in on this now that a few have voiced their opinion :)

Eddie I like the idea :) I'm thinking a 2 month time limit, if you can't find time in 2 months to make something than tough luck eh.
Also everybody knows this event will take place next year so if your really slow start now ::) I also want to see it stay a handmade gift,
not raw materials or a gift card. A handmade gift has meaning and takes work, materials and/or a gift card is too easy and somewhat impersonal.
We have to allow bows, this is after all a archery site, right. Keep the draw weight reasonable as from what I've seen not many of us shoot above 60#.

At this point only one person hasn't come through, after talking with him he's had a series of unfortunate events take place in his life.
I think we can all sympathize with him especially in today's world. My prayers go out to him. Hope yours do also :)

I have covered for him and the gift will go out today. I'm sure if I was in his shoes someone would cover for me also.
After all aren't we a family, and family looks out for their own eh :)

My biggest complaint with the whole Christmas trade is getting folks to post pictures and e-mail me one decent picture for publication
in the magazine. Here it is Jan 29th and were all still waiting on certain folks to post a picture ??? ??? ??? Also I've only received maybe 10
e-mails, if you want to see yourself in the magazine get off your butts and send me a picture. At this point its not worth my time to put an
article together :o I'm not going to waste my time if you folks can't find a few minutes to post and e-mail me a picture. I could also be spending
my time in the shop, hunting, fishing, or with my family. So please don't waste anymore of my time folks. I'm not going to PM anyone(waste my time)
begging that you e-mail me a picture. At this point I consider the trade done and a success but with a few hiccups.

Hope everyone enjoyed themselves, we'll see ya all at the 3rd Annual Christmas Trade next year eh :)

Dana, you did recieve my high-res photo? Are you sure that both your emails work? You gave two emails, and I would have to go back to see which one I used.

Feel free to use my ugly face 40 times for the article :)

The one thing that is so critical in any kind of project like this is good communications. No one should hesitate to say if they will ship late, etc. Then no one will feel left out.

It was a great time. I am glad you are doing it next year. If you need extra elves to help you out next time, just say so.

Thats crazy. :( I dont think its about making an even trade. Its too hard to compare all the different stuff anyway. I wouldnt worry about who's was better. I hope you join again next year :)  I didnt look back at your gift but Im sure it was great. You didnt stiff anyone unless you chose to send nothing.  I wouldnt sweat it.

David....all anyone on here expects is a Gift from the Heart....not a Gift from a Sporting Goods Store....You made it with your own two hands....and thats what made it special...as long as someone tries to make a nice gift.....and not just toss something together....there is no better gift in my Mind....don't judge your handmade gift by any others....thats like judging one child against another....just ain't right.....You had better be back next years....maybe I will draw You!!

It ain't about who made the finest gift. It is about the spirit of giving and making something with what you have. Do your best and enjoy the spirit. You made a fine gift. One that I am sure anyone of us would be happy to get.

since i know my recipient has internet problems, i hope it is OK to post pictures of what i sent.  it's an asbell-type quiver, made from one piece of leather, with stiffeners matching the 9 arrows it holds.

I agree that this Christmas trade is a wonderful thing. Dana you have  done a great job, and it is perfect just the way it is. It has been said before giving is from the heart and not not all of us are as gifted as others, and that is to be expected but we all try as best we can. The gifts all looked great, and everyone should be proud of the work that they put into their gifts.

Me and my wife have both received wonderful gifts in this Christmas trade.  Both of us would like to say that this has been a great experience and a lot of fun.  My wife received a very unique bow and 6 arrows from waterlogged.  I received a wonderfully hand-crafted quiver from ryano.  It's all bamboo and leather.  And from islandpiper, I received a beautiful pair of hand made wooden spoons and some cajun seasoning that would absolutely wake up ANY food!!  Once again, Thanks guys!!!
Dana, me and my wife would also like to thank you for taking the time and effort to put this all together for everyone that has been involved.  Can't wait 'til next year!!!! ;D ;D

Thanks Pat, Things are starting to smooth out on the home front some. We were able to get out for a little romantic get away to a rustic cabin over on the Metolous river a few days ago. Marinated steaks on the barbecue and river right off the porch. Watched a big herd of elk at dusk and a stroll along the river the next morning. ;)  I was even able to control myself and not take a saw to cut staves ::)

Keenan, you are really coming along with your knaping. Man thats purdy.

Kennan, I think you will get your chance to hit some hard stuff if you come out to the Classic. You will meet a lot of the guys on the site and get more knaping and bow building in than you can imagine. My adrenaline is already flowing in anticipation!

How about those guys get those disposable 35mm point and shoot cameras, take some shots, and mail them to someone with a scanner to create digital images.

Or maybe the creators took some digital shots, at least we could see the goods.

That beading was great, better than any photo can show.

I promised this some time back, so I'm sorry I'm just now getting around to posting this.  In addition to the super quiver that Mini-Calendar girl sent me, she also included this great knife/mini-mag case.  Thanks again Mini.  I wear it every day.  It does a great job keeping my Case XX Trapper close at hand and safe from falling out of my pocket, and who knew a flashlight would come in so handy.  It beats carrying my reading glasses around and helps me see just as well.   ;D

Really sorry about posting this late, I got back to the university and was slammed with work, then my computer decided to break. Posting from a friends, so sorry about poor picture quality. This is the quiver and arrows that dustybear sent me. They are really great. The leatherwork is some of the best I've seen, the idea is unique, and the arrows fly great out of a bow I just finished! Perfect timing.

Here are some pictures.
