Title: Sabine pork
Post by: PeteC on January 31, 2009, 11:33:09 pm
My son-in -law,Zach , and I went pig hunting down in the Old Sabine bottom public land today. We found a little bunch right off the bat this morning, and trailed em for about half a mile.A couple of the bigger hogs, seemed to know we were sneakin' up on on em,so we decided to split up  and try to get ahead of the bunch for an ambush. They drifted toward Zach, and he did'nt get but one opportunity, but he made it count. He snuck up on all fours to get a 15 yard shot. The pig only made it about 40 yards and crashed. He was using his little 48" osage D-bow,50#@25".His arrow was switch-cane with a band-saw trade. We were 2 miles from the truck,so neither one of us ought to have any trouble sleepin' tonight. God Bless

Judging from the shot placement, it looks like he was shooting downhill pretty steep. However he did it, he did it right. Congrats. ;)

No,he was on level ground, and was crawlin' through standing, dead, inland sea oats(Chasmanthium latifolium). He hit him a little high, but caught the top of the lungs. God Bless

impressive stalk and shot! congrats.  Might you be willing to share with me the width of that fine bow?  I've just started working on one of the same length and design and am trying to figure out what's the best width.
                             thanks, nick

Nick,I believe Zach's bow is about 1 1/4" wide at the handle, tapering evenly to 3/8" tips.I'll see him today, and if that's not right,I'll correct it. My whole family will be out today to celebrate my son's birthday.I'm cookin' my special duck dinner. God Bless

Hello floorman,I live between Whitehouse and Chapel Hill myself. The" Old Sabine River Bottom "is a TP&W run ,type 2 area near Lindale,in northern Smith Co.It is a little over 5700 acres of river bottom ,with a fair population of hogs, that requires the 48$ permit to use it.It's the closest area to us,although there are many throughout the state. The one at Richland chambers, and Gus Engling have more pigs, but are more of a drive. God bless

Floorman,my son-in -law and I will be out there sat. morning chasing pigs.If you see a blue Dodge 3/4 ton in one of the parkin' areas ,that's me.Your welcome to head down that trail and join us,we'll be moving slow, lookin' and listenin',from the trail, till we find some, then it's off to where they lead.If you go out there, make sure you take a compass. It all looks alike, and it's pretty easy to get turned around,(when followin' pigs on the move)  on an overcast day. God Bless

Won't be able to make it this weekend to many honey-do's but thanks for the invite .When and if I get out there, I'll be watching for your truck. Never used to even take a compass but getting older and take my gps just in case. Not so exciting anymore wandering around half the night triing to find the way out. Will I get a decent map with my permit'? Good huntin'

There hav'ent been any maps out there lately, but there are suppose to be,although there is a big map at the entrance and check in point. You probably won't get your book for a while, but when you do,it'll have all the areas in the state listed, with their regulations, and pretty good maps. God Bless
