Title: Del's First Official Flight Shoot.
Post by: Del the cat on May 27, 2019, 12:06:34 pm
To cut to the chase, I won the 50# ELB class  :)
The distances were well down due to strong head winds, damp weather and an uphill shot.
I also shot my little Osage flight bow, which they classed an an ALB (despite it being too short!  :o ) as that was the nearest appropriate class which they were hosting.
I won that too :) , actual distances haven't been published yet, but some people were saying their distances were 90 yards down on last year!
It just gives me an idea that I'm in the right ball park.

I had the added excitement of overdrawing a 26" flight arrow into the belly of the little Osage  :o It exploded spectacularly and the string sheared a bit off the overlay, but the bow seems fine.  (you can see the dink in the belly in the pic)
It's blogged up in more detail here:-

Other pic is me shooting the ELB, note the PA head gear :)

Del,
I read your write up on the blog, sounds like some challenging conditions to say the least. I hope you get another chance to put a few arrows through the ELB and report back. I assume it is this one?

It's one of 3 that I built as per that post.
It's the shortened and re-worked Mk2, heat treated yew belly, Boo back. The belly spalled out a chunk of wood and was patched but its still ended up faster than the Boo/Yew/Ipe! Best speed clock was 211.9 fps :)
It's a testament to the durability of a executed made belly patch :)

I really enjoyed following your story. You had an impressive debut!

Prior to the creation of our US primitive divisions, Dan Perry and others would show up to compete with their all-wood bows to compete against modern composite bows and they would often win. It is good to see you carry on the tradition at the UK flight shoot.

Now that's the best way to build bows as far as I am concerned :BB

Well I won't drive that far* to one, but if there's one a bit closer I'd have a go :)
Del
*I drove a laughably short distance from a US perspective .... ::)
162 miles, is probably, "just up the road to you guys"  ;D

Congratulations!  Quite a score on the first time out!  162 miles is quite a long haul back east - but out here in he Wild West, it is just a short hop!

Congratulations Sir. Well done and all that chap. That's pretty cool Del. I really need to hang around this section a little more. Actually a lot more. Need to start playing around. I've got nice big fields to play in. Gotta learn more.

me, too!  We got some 260,000 acres of grassland available to shoot in - and not too much chance of anyone getting in the way!!  Sort of like the Salt Flats, only with  grass!  And the arrows don't sink out of sight!

Del do you know if this on again next year? I'd come along if you know any details. Thanks.

I imagine it will be on. There is a flight archery group on Facebook where the UK comps get posted up in plenty of time... they mostly seem to be up North  >:(
