Title: Cross Plains, TX Hog Pictures
Post by: gstoneberg on June 14, 2011, 01:57:06 am
We had an impromptu get together at our deer lease near Cross Plains, TX.  Jackcrafty, Criveraville, their boys and I flint knapped, ate and generally goofed off during the days.  At night Cipriano and I hog hunted with our rifles.  I know not everybody is comfortable hunting around feeders.  If that's you, I apologize in advance.   When I see the hogs on trail cam coming out in daylight I try for them with the bow.  When they're only coming out very late I sit in blinds and use a rifle.  I recently bought and sighted in a digital night vision scope for my .308.  I bought the scope because our hogs have gotten so light shy.  Even a red light often sends them running and if I mount a red light on the feeders they won't come in.  Here it is ready for action on the golf cart that I hunt out of.

Notice the miniature DVR and video cable running up to the scope.  Being a digital camera at heart, this scope has a video out port to record the hunt.  I guess this is about as far from primitive as you can get.  Sure love the technology though.

When I get to the lease I always check the trail camera pictures to see where the best place to hunt should be.  I found that our large sounder of small pigs had left but there were 2 boar coming in regularly.  The larger one was frequenting the feeder at our gray stand.  He looked like this:

That was the night before I got there.  He didn't show Friday night which I wasn't too sad about as I knew Cipriano was coming.  I put him in that stand Saturday night and I went to a different stand.  About 10pm I received a text from Cipriano that a big boar had come in but had spooked before they could shoot (Diego was with him).  That was too bad, I was hoping they'd sling some lead.  We were still texting about it after midnight when my trail camera flashed.  I hurriedly fired up the DVR and scope and got ready.  I don't have the video edited yet, but here is the last frame the scope sent before the gun went off.

He was unusually clean, probably because the hog wallow by my feeder had dried up.  Back at camp we took this picture.

He weighed 160lbs and was probably only a year or 2 old as his tusks were under an inch long.  It was a fun hunt.

If anyone is interested  in the video, I'll post a link to it when I get it loaded.  This is a primitive archery forum so I understand if it isn't appropriate.  I do love hog hunting, whether by bow  in daylight or rifle at night.

A 70 year old jeep is a formidable weapon if you ask me.  Certainly would be if you ask the pigs. ;)  We did have a good time.  Gonna do it again for sure.

OK, this is my first attempt at making a video from the digisight.  It isn't very long, I didn't waste any time shooting.  There's no microphone so I put some music behind it.

Jorge, I was showing Diego the video and when he saw the position of the hog he asked, "Is George gonna shoot it in the hiny?"

Kid you not  ;D

Haha, tell him I would never shoot a hog there intentionally and ruin a future ham. ;D  With me all my shot placements are based on the future food value. :D

I'll second that...I wouldn't want those hogs in our woods wrecking our ecosystem but dang it would be nice to "hop down to the ranch" and shoot a few when the mood struck me.   >:D

Yea, it's a mixed blessing.  We get to hunt year around, but the damage they do is amazing.  It would be quite dangerous to try and plow the field at the lease because of the holes the pigs dug to get the johnson grass roots.  They have a very negative impact on the deer herd.  I didn't hunt them effectively enough last year and our deer sightings were down.  It really helps when I have people come and hunt with me as the odds of somebody killing one go way up.  Consequently I like company. ;)

John, you crack me up.  Come on down guys.  It aint a sure thing, but we've killed a hog on every trip but one this year, and missed one that time.  Hope the sows come back before I go again.  But El-D is right, from here on out it will be miserable hot.  Not so bad in the middle of the night, but you do have the rest of the day to endure. ???

JW,

This morning Diego woke and asked to watch the video again... He studied it hard and said, "I've been thinking, and I think George shoot that hog in the hiney. Daddy why do you think he shoot that hog in the hiney?"

Cool George, I like that.  I have been thinking of getting one of those digital scopes for coyotes in Montana.  What brand, model, where did you order it from, and if you don't mind what was the cost.?  I have a 3rd gen. night scope, sold by Osprey, and it took a dump, and even though it was still under warranty, they refused to honor the warranty, the woman I talked to and told her that I bought it at a gun show, said, " Well if you had gone on line, you would have seen that we don't carry those any more!' and not in a very friendly way.  I told her I don't know how many people she has seen carrying a computer around at a gun show, but I sure don't carry one.  Well I will never buy any Osprey product again!  I am going to bad mouth them in all the gun and hunting mags I can!  Anyway, back to your thread cool video, and nice sized hog.  Some good chomping there.  Too bad Cipriano and Diego didn't get one.  Oh well I guess they can get a pork sandwhich as a consolation prize..... ;D :P

Wayne, I'll PM you the details, but if you google pulsar digisight n550 you'll find the scope.  My first one failed and was quickly replaced.  The replacement has worked great so far.  To record the video you have to buy a portable DVR like the mountain bikers use with their helmet cams to get video.  I can send info on what I have.

Sorry to hear of your NV scope problems.  That is too bad.

That reminds me, Cipriano you didn't take any pork home?  I sent some home with Patrick but I don't think you took any based on what I processed last night.  I kept a nice big roast for the next get-together.  Gonna be quite a bit of sausage and he was fat enough to make it good.  I'll grind and mix in spices tonight.  Saturday we'll have fresh breakfast sausage with our pancakes.

George, I cooked up the hog two nights ago and we might finish it today.  Excellent meat!  The loin is especially good!

George, you should have used the Looney Tunes music, for your video. ;) ;D  Sounds like you have some good eats coming for breakfast. ;) :o

Wayne, I probably could have as that's likely public domain by now.  That's my problem, I'm low on the imagination scale.  I don't think I've bought commercial sausage since moving to Texas.  It makes good sausage.  I used to make a lot of venison sausage, but not anymore.

Good deal Patrick, hogs that size are perfect for eating.  That's one of the reasons I didn't dally when he came in.  Most people see a pig, but I saw roasts, loin and breakfast sausage. ;D

Wayne,

That's too bad about your scope.. It would have been fun to get a hog, but then he wouldn't have gotten a porcupine and we wouldn't have that video of George shooting that hog I'm the hiney  ;D >:D And looney tunes song would have been perfect...

Nope I didn't get any pork-- you and Patrick hogged it all... Heeee heeee..

Yeah, Cipriano, I was a bit upset to say the least.  A friend of mine is a lawyer, and he said a warranty is no guarantee, that they can weasel out of repairing it.  She did give me an address to send it to for repair, but I am not going to pay what I paid for it again, and the fact that Gen. 3 tubes are far and few between.  It was a cool scope when it worked.  anyway, I will do what I can to stop an increase in business for Osprey.  You say Diego got a Porcupine?  :o  Well eat the porcupine. :P  Going to do some quill work?  The Looney Tunes tune would have been a neat touch, especially at the end when he shot the hog, the ...."abee abee abee, that's all folks"   Anywho, you better get back over there and get that bag of meat, and some sausage. ;)  How big was the porcupine?  I seen one in eastern Montana, and it was huge! :o  Well get back over to the feeder, and get a hog.  Good luck next time. ;)  Oh, yeah, keep the porcupine out of the freezer, a snake is bad enough, but the wife might draw the line at a porcupine. ::) ;D ;D

Once the porcupine is skinned, then you come to the easy part.

Brine in a solution of 2 cups salt per gallon of water, 36 hours for a quill-pig under 10 lbs, 48 hrs for larger animals.  Smoke at 180 degrees until meat in the center of the thigh reaches 165 degrees.  Chill, slice, and serve with selection of crackers and cheeses.  Wine recommendations include Pinot Noir, Malbec, or (of course) dry Champagne.

p.s. porcupine is proof that a beavers and cacti can and do interbreed!

Stickbender, Cipriano sent me some porcupine pictures.  The first 3 are of Diego's porcupine.  The last 2 are of a pit bull in Stephenville that got into a porcupine.  He said they removed 1300 quills from the dog, and it recovered.  Probably not so for the porcupine.  Our porcupine are pretty small.  The quills are about as large as round toothpicks.

I think that was one that was on the internet sometime back.  The Pit bull just didn't have sense enough to stop.
It is a wonder it wasn't blinded.  Those spines have tiny barbs pointing backward, and they will actually work themselves in deeper.  They can cause a nasty infection also.  Yeah, that is the size I am used to seeing, but the one I saw in Montana could eaten that one!  I actually thought it was a hog, and I didn't know of any wild hogs in Montana, and thought maybe it was from a ranch, but then it finally worked it's way through some ravines, and arroyos, and I was able to see it more clearly in the scope.  This was just at dusk, and I was trying to use the last of the light to get a Mule Deer.  Never got one. :(
But let us know how it tastes.

Hey Paul, got any open weekends in July?  I haven't picked my "fill the feeder"s date to go out there again, but didn't fill them this time so I have to go back.  If you have a weekend open and are up for getting together in the heat we'll make the next get together when you can be there.  Otherwise my next trip out there will likely be the weekend after the 4th of July.

You ought to check out BSA's green laser for night shooting. It clamps on top of your regular scope and you can shoot out to 300 yards. We are using it down here for yotes and hogs and it is around $300. It works real good.

Really? Our hogs won't tolerate any light on them. White, red or green; color doesn't matter. That's why I got the night vision. They get used to a feeder light in time, but I wanted to be able to hunt away from the feeders.
