I just finished this osage bow.
I named this bow after my father, God rest him, who always aid that when he was satisfied with how something came out.
La Prassa is done except to sign it and brush on a coat of polyacrylic to protect the signature. Spar urethane makes it run. Thanks again to Brain Halbleib for the stave. Thanks for looking in.
She’s 51# at 26 in and is 62 inches long.
Here she is unbraced.

Its always good to see you post a bow, the quality keeps us new guys on our toes. Really like the bow, very nice tiller in both shots. How wide did you go with the limbs Jawge?

I was afraid you were going to say kilt. :o ;D

gmc, the limbs are 1.5 in wide narrowing down to 1/2 inch nocks. The bow is about 62.5 in long. She weighs 18 oz and has a 8 inch non bending handle. The handle is 1.25 thick and 1.25 wide. She weighs 18 oz. Glad you like it. Thanks. Justin, I may have to get a Greek effzone costume. :) Jawge
-
The critic in me just has to say, that the lower limb is doing all the bending out of the fades, and it appears to have taken extra set due to that. I'm just say'in. ;)
-
Set is about 1.5 or a bit less. Jawge
-
Thanks, Dano. All my lower limbs seem to take more set than the upper. It's the way I hold the handle. I just live with it. I'll check to see when the limbs are bending. But both limbs are tillered as evenly as I can get them. :) Jawge
-
Very nice looking bow Jawge, I like the character on the one limb. Very clean and nice tiller. I'm sure he would be proud to have his name on it. Congratulations.
-
Very well done.. ;)
-
Thanks, keenan and knightd. Keenan, Dad never saw any of my bows but he gave me his love for wood. I started trying to make them in '89 right after he died. Took me a few years to get one I could take hunting with me. Lord willing this one will go with me in the fall. I like to think he'd like one of his favorite sayings on my bow. Thanks for listening. :) Jawge
-
Great to see another one of your bows, Jawge. And I'm like Pat, yeller looks good in your hand, and, Nice Tiller! ;)
-
Thanks, mullett. Glad you like it. I hear that yeller is the style these days. :) Jawge
-
Great bow Jawge!
That Osage can be a bugger bouncing back and fourth. If she shoots good I'm usually happy. Good to see you making bows again.

Thanks, Roger. I actually haven't stopped making one here and there. She's shoots well and she's quiet. No string silencers needed as of yet. Thanks, Dave. aero, glad you like it. Jawge

Looks like a keeper Jawge :) Thanks for sharing eh

My first thought was also, "Jawge made an osage bow?"
looks great though.
Hey, what is Brian up to? It's too bad how the whole magazine thing played out. the new one is real good, but i really liked Brian's too. He really helped me to get my first couple articles published.
-
Thanks, Okie. I do like it. Pappy, thanks. I had to work hard for this one. LOL. Thanks, Dana. You are welcome. Gopher, LOL. I've been using osage for quite some time. I don't show all the bows on every forum though I may show this one a bit more. The thing that made this tough was all the heat correcting I had to do as well as the tillering. Most of you realize that a character stave gives a different picture depending on which side you are looking at which is why I supplied 2 full draw pics. I like the bend to start right at the end of the fades and sometimes tiller the fades and handle to bend even in a narrow handle bow. This one has a a whopty do mid limb top limb but only on one side of the limb, a slight pin knot in the same area and slight propellor twist. If you look at one picture the bottom lim seems to start bending before the top one in the fade area but then if you look at the other shot they both start bending in the same place. So anyway as Bellechek (Pats coach) says, "It it what it is." :) Jawge

I was reading the other day in one of the TBB's where Jim Hamm said that the darer colored osage is usually the best. Most of the osage staves I've used have been a pale yellow color. This one has a darker yellow color and strings of brown it. Good stuff, Brian Halbleib sent me. It shows in the cast. Of course, I have no scientific proof of that. LOL. Jawge
-
Good looking bow, Jawge. Aren't those new sweatpants, though? ;D
-
Thanks, Hillbilly. Of course they are. :) Jawge
-
Nice bow Jawge. I really like the way you finished the bow. It really enhances the color of the wood. You are an inspiration to many of us on this site and it is always a treat when you post the bows you have made. I am sure your dad would appreciate the bow, and be honored that you named it after him. Thanks for all of the encouragement and advice you have given me and others as well.
Tell
-
Tell, thanks for the kind words and I am glad you like the bow. Osage is a pretty wood. I put the rough tools down and go to the scraper early on so there aren't many nicks. They are removed with a knife used as a scraper. The 100 grit and 220 grit sanding is done. Then I shoot it 2-3 dozen times and check tiller. I come back in dampen a paper towel and run it over the bow followed by more sanding with 220 grit after it dries. I repeat until the water does not raise the grain anymore. Then I sand 400 and 600 grit. Checking the bow in the sun helps show nicks or a good light source. Then the bow got 3 coats of Tru Oil to fill the pores especially on the belly. Then 3 coats of spar urethane spray to waterproof it for rainy and snow days like this. Jawge

What! Not BOM? Nice bow and should be entered! >:D

Very nice Jawge, looks great! :)
-
Thanks, Old Bow. I am glad you like it but I am all set. Thanks, Craig. Thanks, El. I, too, love my sweats. Thanks, Rick., VB, and brownhillboy. Jawge
-
Great looking bow Jawge. Your site was one of my first stops when I first got the bow building bug back in 03, and I've always appreciated the simple elegance of your bows. Plus, as an often transplanted N'Englandah, I like your fashion sense as well. ;D ;)
Jude
-
Thanks, Jude. You're kind! I love my sweats! Jawge
-
Nice one, Jawge! Looks like you handled that whoop-te-do just fine. It never occurred to me that a character stave would have a different full draw profile from either side but it does make sense. I've got some hackberry that could be classified as having "character". I'll have to remember to post both side photos when I get one made up. Always a pleasure to see your bows. Reminds us newbies why you're one of the masters.
-
kilted, thanks for the kind words. Jawge
-
That is a beauty George. Very nice tribute.
Chasing Crow
-
Thanks, chasing crow. Nice of you to say. Jawge

Nice looking bow Jawge. Just in time to take it out stumping. ;D
-
Thanks, Bentstick. Yes, she's been out quite a bit. Stumping in the snow is fun. Jawge
