Title: post your successful Hunting points.
Post by: iowabow on December 16, 2015, 07:06:27 pm
I have talked to a lot of guys who knapped points and then had  successfully taken deer with them. Tower texted me pictures today of a really nice set of points he made and we talked about making this thread to invite guys to this thread and post points that took deer. This way others can see the sucess of stone points. Tower could you start us off with your work?

Don, It was a corner notched type, I believe I trimmed down the sides of base so they didn't  stick out past  the shaft to much, It was pretty crude but it flew great so it got the ride that Nov. day. Bob

Tower your attachment to the shaft looks like it held up well. Is that pine pitch and sinew?

This is a copper knapped point I made and that took my first deer. I also made the shaft from red oak. The fibers holding the feathers are milkweed dyed with stag horn sumac and the glue use for the feathers and plant fiber I made from a deer hide. The black material holding the point to the shaft is pine pitch glue. The wrap holding the point is sinew.
The paint on the shaft is made from stag horn sumac (orange) and the black paint is made from charcoal and egg yoke.
If I remember right the bow was 50 lbs.

These are ABO but the post is about flint taking deer with stone points so I think it would be interesting to include. This is from 2012 I think.

After understanding that the Kentucky blue is the material the fact that we see light is unbelievable and a real credit to the skill you have brought to bare on that point.

Thank you for the kind comeback . I've taken others in the 1980's and stopped shooting them for years. passing on over 20 of them since. I saw a small to me 250 lb the day before and said cool here we go again as I walked in into my ridge. As he turned down hill at me the hair rose on my head as this boy was wide I mean wide at the shoulder. The rest is history as I saw this magnificent animal yield his majestic life to me.

Huge bear HWS and the mount looks great. Did you have to remove a wall to get it in the house, doesn't look like it would fit though any doorway its so big.

Here's a pic of a deer I took with a obsidian Point that Bubby made for me. The point was mounted on a boo shaft with pitch and sinew and shot out of a scalloped black locust selfbow of my making. The point sliced deep into the deer and it went down within sight of me after sprinting only about 35yds, heck of an effective hunting point bub made. Its mounted on a necklace now that I proudly wear to gatherings.
