Cowboy suggested I start this thread :)
Challenge is to make one or both ;D
Scanned these, not great but ya get the idea.
ARREDONDO - Location: Golf Coastal Description: A thick medium to large size point with a short broad blade and a wide concave to bifurcated base which can be thinned. Basal ears are rounded to pointed.
HERNANDO - Location: Georgia, Alabama and Florida Description: A medium to large size, basal notched, triangular point with wide flaring tangs that may extend beyond the base. Side edges are straight to concave.

Thanks Dana! I haven't looked at what these are made of yet but looks like I may need to FINALLY break into some of Eddie's coral ;D. This aught to be a fun challenge.
-
Dana- Is there a specific rock that has to be used or is it anything goes?
-
It's whatever ya got Rick :). I was just looking at where they originate and figure at least some of em have to be coral..
-
A lot of the ones I have found in Florida are made of Translucent coral or heat treated chert, like what Wade stole from Disney. ;) I north fl., you will find them made from Coastal Plains. And I used to find quite a few Hernando's with vry good, serrations. The high$ Arredondo's are thin, and translucent. Overstreet doesn't have many good ones. ;D
-
I am going to try to make both, but they will probably be out of obsidian. My supply of knappables is getting LOW.
-
I reckon I'll get this rat killin started ;D
Good 'ol Sonora flint.

-
OOh Shannon - your gettin them flakes tight and them edges straight ;D. That's a beauty and some pretty rock!
-
Ok you hit my favorite point right between the notches. So I've been busy .........................not
(http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk33/Bonepile/junepoints015.jpg)
the Hernando pile
-
how many flakes do you usually remove on your notches. i was told once tha its usually 3 flakes on each side . wich wouald be 12 flakes total removed on the point.. or does it matter
-
Ya'll may not have much rock in FL, but ya sure got some purty one's :). Course I guess those could be from anywhere - Like that pile of Hernando's regardless. Niceun's ;).
-
that's a blend of coral and a few burlingtons,I like the colors.I think, and I could be wrong, but the hernandos were before heat treating was the norm.so I recon I cheated.I wanted to show what I had lying around so I'll have to knapp more

well i know it aint quit July as of yet but i was on a roll today
actualy i had two first today
the first of the first was, i used some unheated picture jasper. a slab of course, that all i use because i buy my stuff at a rcok shop and cant spal worth a crap.
the second of the first was, it was the first time that i broke a point nad glued it bck together.normally i would of just reduced it and made a smaller point.
but this was tooo nice ,atleast for my limited abilities.
i know there are a few flat spots from the saw yet, onlt cause i was afraid of breaking it in half if i tried to get any more of them out.
it actually broke when i was doing the very last flake in the last notch, thats wht i glued it back together.
heres a pic,i guess it would the "Hernando" style of point.
this along with 3 others that are finished, and other yet to be made will be going in a trade so i hope he wont be disappointed with this or the others.

Redwasp
Nice points. I hear ya on the kids. I only have two, can't imagine six. :o, Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet up with you at Bald Eagle.
-
Holy cow, I gotta get busy :). Beautiful Roger, as usual. Great work redwasp - keep on knappin. I started 5 today and broke em all, one of those - lay it down and go do something else days..
-
Happy Forth of July! I'll try and complete a couple this weekend. All I have is Obsidian. These Arredondo and Hernando points seem quite large. Were these originally used as Atlatl points?
Allen
-

Yall have a great weekend, don't blow yerselves up :o
Bone pile
-
Man Bone, your arredondo is nice! Lots better than mine. I like it.
Here is my attempt at both points.I have never made these types before so be easy on me. :P I also didn't have any native material so I used Peoria.
-
I see now that I should have made my edges a more eliptical?
-
Beautiful points fellas I dont have my rock yet so I am playing with somthing easy to chip a piece of glass.

Jaeger, those look like ghost points. Very cool by all so far. I have been trying to make something worth posting. So far they have been broken or turned out not looking like either of the challenge points. I wil keep trying.
TJ
-
Well done guys, I will try and get some pics up today :)
Leaving monday for a week, going camping of course the knapping gear will be going camping also :D
-
Man, y'all are crankin' out some nice work, I gotta get busy. Roger, those are absolutely perfect, look like they were transported through time.
-
nice points guys. What kinda light did you put that glass over? really cool effect. bone pile them are perfect. looks like I made mine to small have to try again.
-
ceiling fan light , those glass slabs are easy but crumbly if you have been chipping creek rock.I think glass is probably the easiest stuff to try.
-
I finally got some time this weekend to attempt some points, Just can,t seem to keep my points as clean as some others posted on here. Well here's my attempt anyways. Later Bob

Those are some great points, everybody. Roger, that Arredondo is dead on. I've been too busy getting ready for hunting season, I got to sit down and chip some. Dang, I'm starting to sound like Tiller ;).
-
I like that point mine always end up smaller than that. one day I 'll make a larger point.
-
Outback, you got that thing perty thin! If you learn to push in with pressure more,(toward the center of the point) then you will learn that your flakes will travel farther and you can clean some of those area up. Give it time, it will come.
-
Timo, thanks for the tip, an yeah I want to make a thin clean perfect symentry point. Hope I live long enough to reach this goal, guess I,m just getting antsy, Thanks Again. Later Bob
-
Bob, I get most of my hinges/steps when I don't pay attention to how well my platform is ground. Good platforms well below center seems to get the flakes traveling farther for me. Also, I can't get away with using a very sharp pressure flaker either. ???
-
Thanks Shannon, After you mentioned it I don,t think I,m setting my platforms below center enough especially when they start getting thin an flat. Thanks Bob
-
Them look good Bob! All good advice there.
-
Here are a couple of my Hernando points I did over July 4th. These started from nodules we collected at Glass Buttes. Had surgery on the ankle to remove screw, yesterday. Now its sore and swollen again. However, it is another step towards recovery.

Was camping for a week and managed to beat on some rock amongst all the other fun :)
-
Here are my attempts at an Arredondo. I have never seen these or tried to make one. I am not to sure about correct size. I've only seen the photos posted here. These are both from Glass Buttes Obsidian and about 2 inches long. I like the Mahogany one.
