Title: Osage Golden Brown 62#/28” (Nr. 68)
Post by: simson on September 13, 2015, 04:18:04 pm
Here is a fuming experiment osage bow.
I'm very pleased with what came out and started already new fuming jobs, hopefully with similar good results.

Stave
The stave was a very well seasoned piece of osage with lots of character there, humps and bumps, snaky curves, changing crown and some twist – caused into a lot of correction work (all done with the heat gun). The stave was too thin at handle, so I glued on a piece of matching osage. I tried to get invisible, but if you look close you can see it.

Fuming
The stave /bow was rough tillered before fuming. The whole thing came out pretty well black/dark brown. It was in the fuming tube for 5 days. The tillering process brought out a nice golden brown on the belly side.

Design
She is a asymmetrical flattie with steamed in gentle recurves. Cross section is more or less recangular, particularly with concave belly depending on the changing crown, tapering out into triangular outer tips.
One additional ring on the tips works like a kinda natural grown overlay and allows at the handle a sharp rounded back.

She is 59” long and pulls 62#/28”

The pics do not justice to the beauty of that bow, belief me. Belongs to th light, sometimes the back of this bow looks deep dark as night, sometimes it shimmers like a golden brown (can you hear The Stranglers?).

Ryan, I have done that a lot. Not only with osage, also with elm, ash, elder and some others I don't remember yet. I also have posted some of these. I haven't any problem yet. And I use really thin strings!
Stunning bow. I take my hat off to you.

To be honest it is the neighbor's cat, but he (male) is the most of the time here in our garden and we are friends. BTW. this is the wildest Cat I know, he is hunting frogs in my pond and jumps in the water - never seen that with an other cat ...

Oh yeah Mike, I remeber you have announced it. Let's see your results and let us know your thoughts. Be sure to let the damps go out after the fuming process, the fresh wood is like rubber! I'm always surprized about the changing in wood structure and the super smooth surface.
Can't wait to hear your experience.

Yes, the recurves open up a bit. Had them stiff before but wasn't happy with the comfort of draw. After a little scraping, just some grains, I had it were I wanted.
And yes, I'm too got alot of inspiration from your work!

great bow. Can I use ammonia fuming to bend the wood? (to add reflex or recurve)

have you ever tested other method like bakingsoda, vinegar+steel wool+tea(to add more tannin)?  and are they have same effect like ammonia fuming?(smoth surface, chemical stain, soft wood like rubber?)

I have tested all above, except the baking soda. Do you have a recipe for that? I will try for sure. The effects can reached only with the ammonia fuming. At least my experience so far.

Currently I'm working on some other bows with the fuming, so far very promising ...   we will see.

I know in industrial use ammonia fuming is used for bending wood. But here with high pressure, nothing for my simple fuming machinery.
Wood bending is a lot easier with the steaming or heat gun method.

you said fuming makes wood like rubber. but is it not enough for bending wood without high pressure?

Thanks for the link, I will try this!
You get the rubber like when fuming a long time or with pressure. After 5 days the effects is gentle but noticeable. I maid bad mistakes with my first fuming bows with bending /bracing to soon. Got somme deformations .
The right thing is to wait a few days til the wood has stabilized again!

That qualifies as a character bow and then some!
