Title: Honey locust Flatbow (Pic Heavy)
Post by: DavidV on December 08, 2015, 02:55:31 pm
Here's a bow I just finished up for my girlfriend, she's a lefty so she couldn't use most of the bows I had. It's around 29# @ 26". 60" ntn and 1.5" wide at the fades. I'm finally starting to like honey locust, this stuff has dried for about 3 years now. The riser is yellowheart with a strip of curly oak and the nocks are walnut, yellowheart, and cocobolo. I made a little set of cedar arrows for her too.

I bet she's gonna love that, those tips and handle look awesome.
I don't mean to be a Debby Downer but is that a hinge on the left tip?

Thanks Chris

wizardgoat- There's a little bump on the back of the bow right there, with the background it looks like a hinge.... Now that  have a picture though, it looks a little flat midlimb.

A lovely looking bow, the tones of wood work really nicely, very elegant.  8)

David, you did a great job on getting that stick to bend. I really like the handle and tip details…Lucky Girl. I’ve always had problems with honey locus chrysalling with that tight of a bend. I also have a lot of problems with worms getting into it before it dries out. They must think is some kind of “bug” candy!

I see there’s some more potential bow wood in the picture backgrounds. How big was the tree you cut for this bow?

Man David, that's a sweet little bow man! That honey locust sure is pretty wood. You picked some great woods to compliment it too!

Yeah it's pretty fragile wood, my past bows chrysalled too especially around the little pin knots that are all over the wood. I think this came from a 4 inch tree only 6 or 7 years old.

I've got access to osage, hackberry, walnut, sassafrass, honey locust, and a little bit of plum... A lot of potential bow woods but finding straight staves is difficult.

Thanks for the compliments guys

That's a very nice looking bow!  I've had no luck with honey locust on the couple attempts I've made towards making a bow out of it.  I might have to try it again after seeing this. Josh

Nice work on that honey locust. She should enjoy it.We've got those thorny honey locusts here too like in the background of your pics.Hav'nt tried it yet for a bow.Thought it to be a bit more brittle type of wood.Probably pretty snappy shooting and do like the color of the heartwood of them.Salmon and reddish gray. The deer here transplant that tree all over with it's bean pods.I've had many a flat tire from those thorns. That big tree a sycamore?
