Title: Osage Board Bow - update - made meat!
Post by: Stickhead on November 10, 2013, 06:30:18 pm
Hi, Y'all,

I stumbled upon a nice Osage board with very straight grain at my local lumber store, and decided to find the bow in it.  It was a quarter-sawn board with growth rings nearly perpendicular to the face of the board.  You can sort of see the grain lines in the belly pic.

It's basically a pyramid bow design with some very slight wobbles where I followed the grain to dodge run-offs.  It's 1-3/4" wide at the fades, tapering evenly down to 3/8" tips.  It's 64" NTN and pulls 65 pounds at 26".  It turned out nicer than most of my attempts, so I dressed it up a bit with rattlesnake skins.
I added some purpleheart overlays, a box turtle scale for a strikeplate, leather rest, two-tone cork to build up the handle, and a leather grip laced up baseball-style.

I'm happy with the way it shoots - nice and straight, and packs a whollup.  If I can manage to draw an elk tag, I'll take it out west next year.

Looks really nice,  I is no whimp; but in your full draw pic how many inches are you pulling..? It looks like you are gingerly drawing.  65# that's a good pull for us old #$%arts........ ;)

That's a nice looking bow!! It's been almost 10 years since I've full drawn a 65# bow. I'll be 64 this month and I can still handle the 55's but anything over 60# I start to tremble if I have to hold the count for very long.
I've never attempted a board bow but that looks to be as nice a bow as I've ever accomplished. Very nice job.>>> Fred

Real nice resting profile and tiller at full draw. I like a osage bow that lays flat unstrung with gently flipped tips like that. Skins and finish are nice as well. Looks like you got a first class bow out of that osage board, real nice job all around Stickhead.

Wow!  Nice work.  Never made an Osage board bow, but if I did I would want it to look like this one.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.  Yes, Ryan, those are elk feet that somebody regifted to me.  And that deer head above it is probably the smallest 8-pointer ever mounted.  It's a trophy to me, though, because it was the first deer I killed with a homemade stickbow.

Ain't nothing wrong with that bow.  Nothing wrong with that mount either.  Both are something to be proud of!

Well, this new bow was shooting so well, I thought I'd try it out in the woods this morning.  Bagged a nice buck.  This one might have to go on the wall, too.

For those very few that once threw a fit about the chance of getting a board bow in a trade....NYEAH NYEAH, SO THERE!

Somebody got him some serious credibility "racking" up this score.  Way to go stickhead!  Didja do a little happy dance in the woods?

A board was once part of a tree, just as a stave was.  It is a beautiful bow, and obviously, a great performer.  No shame in a board bow.  Our ancestors, and the N.A.'s would have gladly used a board if it were available.  It is all well and good to make a bow out of a tree, by splitting, and selecting a stave, but it is a LOT of work.  A bow that looks as good as that, and works as well, is no less a bow than one that was worked down from a stave, just a LOT less of work.  I am in no way diminishing the sense of accomplishment by those who do only stave bows, just saying if you want a good bow, and you can make one from a board, why not?  It made meat, and that is what most of us want a bow to do, be it a board or stave bow. ;)  Congrats on the deer, and yes, put it up next to the other one on the wall.  And yes, where in the heck is this lumber store that has Osage boards?

Thanks, y'all!  Sure was a good morning.

That store where I found the board was actually the local Woodcraft shop.  I stuck my nose in there looking for a red oak board, and lucked out with a rare Osage board.  Still got another bow or two left in there, I think.

I love everything about it. Great job. Nice deer as well. I've got a 1x10x8 of osage I got from a guy that has his own sawmill. Been saving it for when I get ready to do some BBO. Which has'nt happened yet, but since seeing this one it reminds me I have it and might want to get it into workable form.   Danny
