Title: Christmas Came In The Mail Today
Post by: El Destructo on December 04, 2009, 01:56:14 am
Well I have traded with at least 25 people on this Board...but I am here to brag on a Member that I had never heard from in the Forums Posts at all until one day He PM'd me and asked if I was up for a trade on some of My Cholla Cactus...He said that He made Pens and had some Local and Exotic Woods that He would trade Me for knife Handles...Well I decided to take a chance with this little Known Member of PA...so I sent Him a One rate Box of Cactus in good faith.....Well Today I went to the Post Office and had a Package addressed from Him to Me....I opened the Box and found a large sampling of different Woods for Handles....and the most beautiful Custom Made Ball Point Pen I have ever Seen..... Jason took a piece of the Cholla I sent Him...cleaned it....filled it with a Black Resin...and Turned it on a Lathe into the most Unique Pen I have ever Owned!!

I want to thank Jason Thompson ( jthompson1995 ) for this fine Gesture and welcome Him to the PA Site and let everyone here know that this gift was above and beyond anything that I was anticipating and far greater than expected....once again ...Thank You Jason

This is a really special pen, love it!
Really liked the osage pen that was posted some time back, too!
Since I handwrite so much and only have shitty pens I really have to thinks of a trade for a custom made pen!

Mike,

I'm glad you like the pen. And thanks for taking a chance and trusting a new guy. I meant to label the woods but forgot before I sealed the box, they (as you've shown them) are Curly koa, African blackwood with sapwood, Bloodwood (flooring scraps), Gaboon ebony, Paela, and the bottom wood is Spalted maple burl. I hope they work good for some knife handles.

I'm new to PA and bowmaking/archery but have been turning wood, mostly pens, for over 5 years and have made hundreds of pens and plenty of bowls and other things. I'm always willing to trade but any new trades will have to wait until after Christmas, I'm swamped with gifts to make right now. I'm willing and able to trade some pens I already have, make a custom pen, a pen from wood (or other things) you send me or turn custom tools, other items (ex. dogwood/persimmon billets for knapping). I'm glad to be a member of PA and this is a great group of people, thanks for all of the help and info I've gleaned from this site already.

I even found another penturner on this forum, ZanderPommo, who also makes some great pens (he made the osage pen that was posted previously) and has joined a penmaking forum I frequent. It's great to be able to make connections with people who have so many similar interests.

hey Jthompson nice pen.
as soon as i get my pressure pot imma make some cholla pens, i think maybe cigars or sierras.
right now im ordering a resinsaver and im going to be making snakeskin pens in cigar, sierra/monet, and slimline if there is enough clearance for a slim.
i imagine you used a pressure pot for the cholla?
is that polyester resin or alumnite? silmar 41 w/black powder coating paint?

You're just about to get into the fun of casting, huh. It's another learning curve to go through, especially the snakeskin casting.

I use Alumilite for my casting because I can't have the odor of polyester resin spread to the rest of my house from my shop. I use mica pigments for my casting and that cholla pen is actually a dark blue/black but the color didn't come through really well in the finished pen. Still looks good, though.

I haven't got a resinsaver but don't do much label casting to justify it. Remember with the slims that you have a lot of leeway with the thickness, you don't have to use all the parts or match the bushings all the time at the centerband and the finial, just at the nib. Happy turning.

ahh true--can you just leave out the centerband, or do you have to adjust the transmision at all??

also how did you cast the cholla w/out burying it in alumnite? PVC??
yes ive heard only alumnite will properly adhere to wood...

There's a bunch of different ways to do it, you can just leave out the centerband, you can make your own or you can make a single barrel slimline that twists at the nib instead. Some searching through the library at the IAP will show lots of ways to do it.

I go ahead and bury it in the alumilite, or rather pour the alumilite around it. Once I cut the blanks apart I actually cut the barrels to length, turned it to 3/4" round and drilled it on the lathe using my Beall collet chuck. that was the best way i know to make sure I get the cholla centered around the tube and nice and even. This works for lots of pens where you need to make sure you drill dead center.

yup you can also make pens with snakeskin cast in resin, antler, horn, acorns cast in resin, pasta cast in resin, coffee beans cast in resin, mammoth ivory, bone, shredded US currency cast in resin, caps from wood burls cast in resin, shell casings and the list goes on and on and on and on......well you get the idea--endless possibilities.

...even worse...  ::)   as if you even need to fill it up all the way anyway.   Arent those things hard to load?  My buddy has a 50 round drum for his Ruger 10/22 rifle and when he first got it we had a hard time loading it.
