Got a bow I ended up cutting down, kinda too short :embarassed:
It's an osage bow, wanna throw some sinew on her and see how she does. I'll try and get pix up tomorrow. It's 55" long with a 7" handle section. Back to the question at hand, what's a reasonable goal for draw length? I'd love it if u told me 28. But it is what it is. And I know someone will say splice on siyahs, I haven't figured out how to do that >:( and I don't really wanna experiment on this bow
-
27 would be within the accepted average for that length,, you may find 27 works fine for you,, if not,, the 28 is not unreasonable
-
It's wide and flat, I thought the sinew would give her knw heck of a bend
-
How wide and whats the draw weight? You could use the mass formula if you know how many ounces the bow weighs to get a real good idea how much stress it can handle.
-
If the handle is stiff make it a bendy. Come closer that way. If stiff I would say 28 is very unrealistic.
-
I think the rule of thumb for a self bow is something like 1/2 bow length not counting the stiff handle section. In your case that would be 24". With sinew, its a different story though. But of course every stave is different and that "rule" is more of a starting point.

Should be ok with sinew. The only problem might be the string angle
-
Splice in siyahs or even straight levers if it helps you get your head around the idea.
Cut v insert v shaped piece of wood into v. Glue and wrap.
-
Oh that's all pat ? ;) lol my bandsaw sux, well in pretty sure it's broke. I just can't wrap my head around how to so it lol
-
Recurve the tips. Use steam to be sure they don't crack on you, since I assume they are thinner already.
-
I'm not sure what you can't wrap your head around? Use a handsaw. Not a complex procedure. At all.
Practice on a couple of scraps, although that is hardly necessary.
-
I saw a guy make a Molly that was 46" and 40# at 29" and it just had a rawhide backing. And yes it even had a short non bending handle. I would say it is not too far from comfortably short. Get the tiller good and smack some rawhide on it and it will last. Stick some sinew and I might even cut it shorter for fun!! :o ;D
-
Well steamed some recurves on her to change string angle and gotta put on an underlay and tips the sinew her.
-
I like the curves on that one. I will try it some time.
-
Was that going to be your trade bow? those tips are FLIPPED
-
Do the sinewing first. Tip overlays don't need to be on most bows anyway so you might as well wait until she's ready for dress-up.
No need to sinew beyond the curves either but do have the sinew run over the handle area and out each limb. I usually start a sinew job with the handle, laying a bundle of sinew over the handle and out each limb.
Nice hooks...more like levers. Should make a cool bow. 8)

Yeah john, that what's left of it.
Pat, the ends are thin. So I was thinking of sinewing a bit of the curve for more strength. And I'll wait on the tips.
