Title: 2ed North Carolina Knap-in & Primitive Skills Rendezvous-Sept 18,19,20-2009
Post by: DBernier on March 18, 2009, 06:20:58 pm
Well here we go again. Last October was a good fleshing out on the do's and dont's of this Event. The area we had was about as spectacular as you could get. I liked the idea of the primitive campers comming and I hope more will come this year. The core people who were there were a great help and the public who responded were gracious in their praise. Great going guy and gals.
Well this year will be about the same forum as last year except for a few changes. This year we will have a bulletin board with the times posted for the presentations. I will post a sign up sheet like last year looking for Volunteers. If you have a skill that is not on the list, email me and we will get you scheduled. Jim and I are looking to purchase two large tents for insurance against the weather. If you have a large tent fly let me know if you would be willing to bring it. Even the smaller ones we can group them side by side.
We will be soliciting "stuff" for the raffles. This year we will have a "ticket bucket" for each prize or group of prizes. The field is in great shape as we speak and I will be doing a first mowing at the end of April.
We will again, have the Hawk and Knife, Archery range, and Atlatl range. We will need people to staff these positions when some of the young people wish to "do their thing".
I will be posting a list of potential demos' and you can email me or call me and I will add your name to the list and then post the new list.
For those of you who have not seen the area here are some photos. Be back soon.

Your Benevolent Dictator--Dick   >:D

Count me and Montana in again.  You better have the Gator gassed up.  I will have a couple of toys made for the raffle.  I am going for a more period look this time.

Eddie that is a darn good idea. As some of you know I am into and have been into the French and Indian War era of American history. This year I will dress as a long hunter for the time of the Event. I will also have a big display of my "stuff" for public view and discussion. I would hope more of us could do this and give the public a good look at what we all do for recreation. See photos for examples. I will post the Volunteer list this afternoon. Already got some people to help.

Here is a copy of the flier. If you copy it for distribution, tape the map, to the back and then have Office Depo of some other copy place run them off for you. Its about $4 for 25 copies back to back. I am having trouble posting the directions (map). Email me your address and I will mail you some with the map already on the flyer.

Actually, I should have said that the knives were going to have a more period look.  But all is not lost, I still have all of my medieval garb stashed away.  Dang, that chainmaille is going to be heavy.

I don't think I'd like to hang around with a bunch of nappers and "boyers" from NC.  :D

You might want to check the spelling on the flyers. :)

Maybe I'll make it this year.

Well, I'm back. Big deal. South Eastern was a long wet bath. Rained 6 out of 8 days I was there. Had a good time.
I guess we are all set to go forward with our event. I will mail out a flier/map to anyone who wishes to help us spread the word or you can down load it from this thread. Just email me if you want one. I will bring a bunch to the Tennessee Classic with me if it is OK with Pappy. Still looking for volunteers for some of the Demo's. Will also be looking for some donations for the raffle. Only 6 months to go. Remember those of you who do Rendezvous, it would be nice to have you dress and camp the part. I am.

I'm working on getting a few other folks to participate this year as well. *fingers crossed* Time will tell.
I think by moving it back a few weeks, there should be fewer folks hunting and more with time to spare.
We got a good idea of what worked well and what needed adjusting to makle it right.

I had a great time last year and am looking forward to growing this event.

Well I'm back from the Tenn Classic. It is a premier event and I keep hearing it was raining over there. I'm all wet anyway so I did not notice. Had a great time as usual. Thanks to Pappy, Greg, Jessy and the whole crew.
Eddie M., remember there are no fish under that ice.  ;D   ;D   ;D
On another note, the site for North Carolina's event is looking very good. I will be doing another mowing in a couple of weeks or so. The inquiries are slow in comming but it is early yet. Wade had a good idea for a bow build and raffle on Sunday and I will let him take the lead on it and explain it to you. Still need volunteers for everything from helping the kids making points to any of the demos we will schedule. If you got a skill, lets hear from you and we can flesh it out. Later

What Pat, Dick and I talked about on the way up to the classic was this idea:
We build a bow start to finish during the NC event. Then auction it at the event.
Along the way we hold classes and stage them as a series.

we start the first either friday afternoon or early sat. and are done by sunday raffle.

Dick said he would donate a log.

Then we have something like 5 classes. something along the lines of:
1. Splitting
2. chase ring
3. bow layout and rough out
4 floor tillering
5. tillering
6 finish - thinking something simple like tung oil but who ever did it could talk about different finishes etc.

Ill take a couple of the classes. dont care which. but would rather split them apart so I can play also.
Maybe I'll take #1 split and #3 layout and rough out.

but that means we still need 4 vollenteers or so to take the other classes.

open to suggestions on the 'stages' or classes and I don't really care which of the classes I teach but will take 2.

Got any more volunteers? think we can make this idea work?

also I think we need to line up all classes and volunteers well prior to the event so we know well in advance what is going to happen when during the event and can publish it in what ever flyers we do.

later

That bow building idea is outstanding! We can also photograph the stages and post 'em, so whoever wins it will have a record of its construction.

As I told Dick, I'm going to have to be watching from the sidelines and chipping rocks...leave the bow building to those who are good at it.

I got 4 dozen pairs of safety glasses to help protect they eyes of anyone wanting to get a closer look at knapping...limit our liability too.

Thanks Jim. Some others were looking into gloves etc to help save the young ones from danger. I picked up 50# of black Obsidian for the kids to bang on. I will need Hillbilly and some others to spall it out to have as many pieces ready for the young ones to hammer on.
The Volunteer list is below. Email me to add your name to it ASAP. We need to schedule this ASAP so we can flesh it out. BTW if there is something NOT on the list email me and if you want to demo it I will add it to the list.

Yesterday I found a piece of rhyolite ~35 pounds I'll throw in the community pile too.  Not sure how good it is all the way through, but there'll be some points hiding in it.  Meanwhile, I'll keep looking for more.

Unless the group is looking for comic relief, or someone to ruin their project, I'll stand clear of the bow building & try to learn by spectating.

Catahoula, there is plenty of free camping-great spot actually, and several people had dogs last year. I don't see a problem with them as long as they're not running amok eating children and rending tents asunder. ;D Yazoo, that's great news-I would like to see a bunch of vendors this year.

I've been struggling to get a food vendor or rock vendors to commit, even though I've contacted a bunch.  I will contact a buddy of mine who does a good job of cooking to see if I can get him to bring  his grills.

My left shoulder is screwed up again...not from knapping...I had the door to the truck catch a strong gust of wind and snatch my shoulder hard as I was trying to close the door.  The roatator cuff is torn & I will likely have to get cut on again. *heavy sigh*

I know Eric Morris and have been dealing with him for years. He always gives me a good count and decent rock, including some real beauties.  He is usually at the Schiele Museum Knap-In in Gastonia (which is this weekend). I plan on being there on Saturday for most of the day.  I won't be chipping any rock, but I'll be hanging out and visiting with some folks.  I expect to learn a lot there, I always do.

I know a Rick Swartz, but he is not the same one you are talking about.  I have never gotten any rock from him. What does he sell?

It looks like I'll be sporting the latest sling fashion for the knap-in... my second shoulder surgery this year is scheduled for 8-19-09. Maybe this one will correct my shoulder enough where I can draw a bow again in the future. *fingers crossed*

I have some frozen bambi burgers that I will be breaking out for Friday night of the Knap-In.  I don't know exactly what the number is, but I can probably feed a small horde.  I may talk one of my able-bodied bowhunting friends into taking out a doe for me to add to the feast.

I was able to get both canopies we used last year and I have added a few patches to my big tarp where it had split. so those are good to go.  I took the canopies up to Dick's house because I probably wouldn't be able come knap-in time. I will have a small anvil for pounding out copper pressure flaker tips and a file or two for dressing those tips. I'll probably bring some frames of ancient arrowheads to show as well.

Every day is getting closer.

Hi Jim,

This near Mebane, NC?  Also...say an old retired fellow doesn't know much about knapping...is reading a book about it...never knapped anything...wants to learn.  Should this old retired fellow (me) bring tools that he buys somewhere or will I be able to pick up the basic tools at the event?  Will total beginners (me again) have a chance to get some knapping lessons?   I made a hickory bow at the Tennessee Classic and sure would like to knap some arrow heads and make some arrows in the future.

also:
Yazoo,

Will be interested in checking out your osage.

Yes, the Knap-In location is just outside Mebane.  If you need a map or flyer emailed to you, please let me know & I'd be happy to send one.

Of course, there will be knappers willing to give help/ lessons.  If I can free up some time, I'd be happy to myself.  Part of knapping is teaching others techniques to help improve their skills. It probably has worked the same way since people first figured out how to shape stone into useful tools. No reason for it to change now.

Jim

If anybody cares, I had different surgery than they thought was required. My rotator cuff was in good shape.  My upper biceps tendon was shredded and there was not enough of it to fix, so they cut it arthroscopically.  My left upper arm now looks strange, but I am already out of the sling & typing with both hands.  I even did a little knapping this evening, but it is telling on my shoulder tonight. I should be good to go come the knap-in.

Jim take care of that shoulder. the knapping will be there when the shoulder is healed.
Rand, if folks are knapping and you are interested, all you have to do is sit down with them and act interested. If you think bow building is addictive wait til you get involved with these knappers!  :o

Hi Jim,

I will copy the map so should be fine. (Still got your phone number if we get lost)  Thanks for offering to help and I sure will take you up on it if you have time.  Hope your shoulder keeps healing up.:-)

I noticed a knaping kit in the Three Rivers catalog...should I buy stuff or will someone be selling tools there?

I don't have anything except my knapping book and enthusiam.  You see there is this fellow I met in Tennessee who is from Brevard, NC who has the prettiest arrows I ever did see and I want to learn to knap an arrow head and make some arrows...(bucket list stuff).

Hey Pat...I will do just that!  I sure get a kick out of bows, arrows, knapped arrow heads, knives (Bobby sure makes nice knives) and such.  Interest I got!:-)

Hello all,

As some of you know, I am a bit green at this. However, I have put this on my calendar and plan to attend. I am shooting for attending all three days if I can. I have only started cracking stone (glass) a month or so ago and this will be my first event. I plan on bringing a tent, a cooler with something to eat (probably dogs), snacks, something to drink, the tools I have made and bug spray. I am assuming I will be able to get rock to bust at the event.

Other than that, I do not know what to expect other than I plan to meet a lot of cool people and hopefully learn a lot.

I don't have any skills yet, but I am willing to help out where ever I can.

I am assuming campfires will be allowed, correct?

Maybe some of you seasoned folks can suggest other things for a new person to bring or what to expect.
Thanks
Steven

Steven, come on down, we'll be glad to bust some rocks with you. There was rock available last year, and should be this year. We allowed campfires last year, should be fine unless something comes up with the landowner between now and then.

Last year Dick & I had cut & split some oak off his property for firewood.  Because of my ongoing shoulder problems, that didn't happen this year.  We are allowed to burn any downed wood from on site and there is still some of last year's wood pile remaining.  If I can handle it, I may visit a couple of cutovers between now & then and cut some smaller pieces that don't need to be split.  I can't handle a maul yet and I can only carry smaller stuff.  If you have a few extra pieces of wood to burn, bring 'em.

I have a little rock I intend to bring to sell.  I also found a 30-35 pound piece of rhyolite that may or may not be worth a dang.  I intend to throw it into the community pile and whoever wants to bust it up is welcome to.  I'm not much on spalling.

I also have about 20 pounds of bambi burgers that I will grill for the group on Friday night.  I'll also have the buns & condiments and probably some baked beans & slaw to go with it.  If you don't like venison (what the %@&# is wrong with you?),  then you're on your own.

Jim,
I will be coming in a F150 so I will load up on wood and bring it with me. It is some old stuff, but will burn just fine. I may have access to some other wood, so I will bring what I can and will be glad to share (maybe I can swap some wood for some rock). I will also bring my sledge and wedges. I have a 16 in chain saw, do you think I should bring it?

Are you nuts! Who the heck don't like Bambi burgers. I will definity put one of those away and look forward to it.

Besides wood, what else can I bring that can help out.

Like I said, this will be my first knap in, so I am going to ask... what type of facilities are going to there? Do I need to bring a shovel?

Hey Steven,

You can bring the chainsaw, it is unclear if you'll need it...though it could be used as an alarm clock in the mornings...nobody would likely do anything to you as long as that saw was buzzing, but you'll have to stay out of arrow & atlatl dart range.  Just kidding.

There will be porta john there and the out building has a well, but it probably hasn't been run since last year & I don't know if the water is safe to drink yet. My company does well water testing, and I will have a sample analyzed before the event so we know what the deal is with it.  If necessary, I can chlorinate the well  beforehand to kill any bacteria present and leave a little bit in the well to kill any bacteria, but not make the water taste worse that city water usually tastes.

Otherwise, the site is a long grass landing strip with woods to the sides. Check out the pictures from last year's event to get a better idea of what to expect.  Bring some bug spray & sunscreen, as there ain't much shade. Also, make sure you have a good ground cloth, as there can be quite a lot of dew. For anybody who is bringing tables or equipment of any kind, make sure you have covers for anything to be left out, or maybe store it in a vehicle over night to keep it dry.  It is also a good idea to bring a towel to wipe the moisture off your chair.

I will also have bottled water and Gatorade for sale, but no munchies like last year.  I got aggravated by having to stop knapping or what I was talking about to deal with anybody waving a dollar. I also hope to join in the knapping pit this year. I was kind of tied to the tables last year & want to change that some.

If not, does anyone know of another post that has previous knap-in pitures?

I haven't seen the schedule, but I know Dick was working on one.  He is due back in town Monday or Tuesday, so I expect him to post something here then.

TWO WEEKS FROM TODAY!

We have to do some mowing & a little grounds prep yet to do out there. I'm already packing up stuff around here to get ready.
Looking forward to it.

Come on out Bryan. It doesn't matter if you have anything to add or not.  This just a fun gathering.  If you learn something, great! If you can teach something, that's great too. It is all about having a good time with fellow knappers & primitive skills enthusiasts.

Went out to the site yesterday and someone has stolen all the remaining firewood from the stack >:(.  I intend to go do some work on-site tomorrow.  I can also probably cut some wood over at Dick's, though I'm not up for splitting it yet.

Wade, we'll schedule when we get there, I guess. We have a list of people signed up for different things, so we'll just have to see who shows up and when. I'll try to get hold of a dry-erase board or something similar that we can post a schedule on-site. If I wasn't coming from 250 miles away, I'd bring down a load of firewood.

OK Folks I am back and the next two weeks are dedicated to the site. I am having some problems mowing the site because the tractor is giving me fits. "Should" have it cleared up on Monday or Tuesday. We have power there at the site and Jim and I will see if we can get the well pump going. We will also have a good supply of drinking water in our 5 gallon containers. I will also have some 5 gal. buckets with water for anyone needing water for their demos and we can refill them. We have the loan again of the two 10 x 20 foot shelters. We need you to bring any pop-ups you may have and especially any tables. I will try and bring a few but I fear it will not be enough.
If you want to camp primitive, do so. Any displays you can bring will be a great help if any of the public shows up. I here some scouts will be there camping.
I will post a schedule tomorrow night, early, of the people who volunteered to do demos etc. I will be on site from the 16th thru to the 21st. You can come early and camp and help if you wish. later

Well I got the tractor going and I can start mowing this afternoon. Its amazing what spending a little $ will do to solve your problems in a crysis.  ;D

Below. or wherever, is a word document showing the list of volunteers and what they are doing. If you are on the list for a demo, email me for a time you wish to do it. I need to know who will be working on the raffle bow. I have a log we can split and the wedges and maul to do it and the firewood. I will bring a draw knife and hope to have my "draw vice" fixed by then.
I will have a post hole digger for those who need one. I will bring as much firewood as I can, but if you can bring some for yourself that would be a good thing.

Remember, tables, chairs and a pop-up if you have one. There is no shade along the promenade (air strip) You can park your vehicles as you did last year, close to your camps or in the parking area.

Dick got another 20'x10' canopy and I got another 15'x15' to add, so there ought to be plenty of shade this year.

Dick is going out to mow again later today.  Joe is going to meet me out there on Saturday morning to get up some firewood.  I'll also bring my mower to cut closer up in the main activity area and whatever else needs it.

I have a small anvil mounted on a workbench that I'll be bringing for those who want to pound & file flaker tips.

Just over a week away!  Hope you can join us.

We got the site as mowed as it is going to get. You could golf on the main area.  Dick had to get a new battery for the tractor, but it ran well once he got it going.  Joe came out and cut & stacked firewood.  I mowed and joined Joe in the firewood detail.  I also checked the well pump & got it functioning.  The water doesn't look very clear at the moment, but I'll have it tested to see if it is safe to consume (or if it is just fit to put out a fire).

This year, we are going to set up the canopies where everybody camped last year and vice-versa. The parking area will be closer to where the event is being held also.

Things are shaping up nicely. It won't be long now.

To keep this going I would like to refer to the Volunteer list a couple of posts ago on Sept 7th. We had an idea to do a self bow, from scratch, photograph the building process, and then raffle it off on Sunday to a lucky winner. I am not sure we can do this as the people left, now signed up for this is Wade Shikowski,  Kevin Strader and David Knight. David will have his own Vendor table and will be tied up doing that as well as helping people shape their own bows from the stock wood he will bring. Wade, because of personal commitments, cannot be there, I think, till late Saturday. I do not think it is fair to "dump" this all on Kevin at this last moment in time. I will have a 6 inch Osage loge to split and if there is enough enthusiasm maybe we can do it. Its a good idea and a worthy one. If there are others willing to step up and pitch in, maybe we can "get er done."
If there are other vendors/participants who wish to donate to the raffle please contatact me.
We will have 4 rather large shelters there and a bunch of tables. I think we could use more fold up tables and if you can supply your own for whatever you demo, that will be great. Remember to bring stools and or chairs. There will be some there but not nearly enough. As Jim noted we have the well running. This is a big deal for those of you who need water for your demos. I will have 5 gallon buckets full for you to use. I will have a large "drinking" water container with plenty of water and ice, to be refiled as necessary. What you bring extra is for yourself. And a big thanks to Joe for getting the firewood going.
Amy and I are going out this morning (Sunday) to replenish the flyer's at the stores etc. Don't know how well this will work but we have to try. I have some inquires on weather "scouts" can camp there. Yes you can and it is only $2 a car load to do it. I understand some are comming from as far away as Columbia SC. Lets hope so.
The area is looking very good for us and as Jim noted we will switch sides this year. I should have ALL the shelters set up by late Thursday with the help of a friend of mine who is not really involved in this.
If you have any input or suggestions, please contact me or Jim

Hay dick,
On the self bow building class.
I talked to pat and he said he could not make the event.

The only other person signed up is Kevin Strader.

So we could do this a couple of ways as I see it.

First off I have a D-Bow blank that is roughed out. did it at the classic. It is a bit snakey but would work. I would be willing to donate it.

BUT we would need additional volunteers I think to make this work. 2 of us buiding one bow would take us most of the weekend and I wanna socialize and knapp and what not.

I also told david I would help him with his recurve tillering class so we gotta fit that in somewhere as well.

So we could just do a couple of classes. Like splitting your stave, chasing a ring and initial tillering on my rough out. and not try to complete a whole bow for raffle.

OR....

If we get some additional volunteers we could shoot for a completed bow with additional classes.

Also I dont see anyone signed up for the string making class. we would need a bow string finished off for the bow. I got a tillering string but I am shooting with any strings that I have that might work.

Any takers or comments from Y'all?

I will heat straighten that stave tonight just in case. But We gotta figure it out ahead of time cause I gotta know what crap to haul along. Plus we would need a bow bench and a tillering board, finish etc.

well bump that donor stave idea.
I just went to look at it and I have the width roughed out but not the thickness. Wont be able to heat bend it with out thinning it quite a bit. and I won't have the time between now and the weekend to thin it and bend it. Will try but dont think I will get there.
And it REALLY, REALLY needs to be heat corrected.

I'm bringing a small anvil on a portable workbench to hammer out pressure flaker tips.  I'll also have a few files for dressing them in my knapping tool kit.

I'll bring the post holde digger out tomorrow evening & I'll also bring a metal tamping rod to set the sign and David's tillering tree. I'll probably put the directional signs up along the route from the interstate on Thursday evening. There is a pretty full day of work on Thursday staring me in the face, so I'll get out there soon as I can.  Tomorrow I'll be getting supplies for Friday night's supper and packing up some rock that will be for sale.

We will be up on Friday...want to learn about knapping but if bow building is going on want to jump into that too.

And if anyone wants to learn the basics of building and making Native American Style flutes I will bring all my stuff and will talk flutes to anyone who is interested.

rand -

about 3 pages back is a word doc attached to one of dick's posts.

Our intent was to have a number of formal classes at scheduled times to teach different stuff. And folks could 'sign up' for those classes when they got to the event. Sign up will be after you arrive.  No one signs up then class not conducted.

Looks like you might already be on the list to do flutes - you randy rowe?

So far the only 'scheduled' class is steve's nature walk and plant ID on sat and I think friday also.

We have a bunch of other classes listed but not really scheduled. Hopefully we can line up what is going on when once we all get there. Other wise it may just be a free for all.

I'm thinking we will get scheduling done last minute.

Dick / Jim / who ever -

Put me down for one self bow class on Sat - 10 - 12 - dont overlap steve's walk cause I wanna be on that. I will do a split and a rough out and ring chase or as far as I can get.

Put me down for one self bow class on sun - 10 - 12 am. maybe we can get something tillered up and ready for auction.

also put me down for:

fire class if you want
or a knapping class

sat I guess when ever is open.

Speaking from a newbies point of view about the finished bow and raffle thing....

I plan to take advantage of all the bow training I can take in and will be grateful for whatever I can learn. I think doing a bow from start to finish and then raffling it is a great idea, but from the sound of it, that may be real tough to do. As a thought, you could still raffle off whatever you come up with at whatever stage it is. If I were attending a meet and happened to win something that was not totally finished, I would look at it as a challenge to finish it. In other words, raffle whatever you end up with and I am sure the winner will still be very happy. :)

See you Friday!

Somebody make the rain go away for a few days.  My makeup is going to run.   >:( >:( >:( If you think I look bad with it, wait til you see me without it.  Just look away.  I am packing, in the rain.  Maybe it will clear up and the weatherman will be wrong for the rest of the week.

to who it my concern. this is warhawk, i cant go to the knapin on the 18-20 sept i was hoping the persons going or participating could take pictures or give us knappers highlights that occur at the event and information about getting local groups started in different areas of the state so persons like me can develope our skills and improve our passions. I also collect paleo indian artifacts for 12 years and my wife showed me a site that promoted flintknapping. I live in Fayetteville area and would like to start a group who wants to learn and have fun too, thanks for a great site.

There were all ready a few folks camping and getting stuff set up as I was unloading.  I saw madcrow as I was leaving to put the directional signs up.  I put one not too far off the interstate just past the semi-truck service center on the right. There's another near the Wilkins St & Hwy 49 traffic light about three houses from the light, and one more across from the Shell station at the corner of McCray road. I hope they help. The yellow entrance sign is right across from Dennis Trail.

Looking forward to seeing everybody out there. I intend to take lots of pictures too.

Also, I just saw the weather and it looks like things are improving from what they thought at this time yesterday (Yay!).  Maybe Eddie's make-up won't run after all. It could be a lot drier than they thought.

I would just like to say that my girls and I enjoyed ourselves on Saturday. Thanks go to Tim from NY for that maple stave, primal need archery for cutting that stave for me and especially all those who were so nice to my 2 girls. They really love the arrowhead necklaces, stones and mink they got for discount! Unfortunately I had to leave suddenly due to an emergency at work and had to pack and run before I could thank anyone. I also wanted to pick up some of those tonkin arrow shafts, dang forgot!
Oh, I was the guy sitting in front of the bowmaking area working on a knobby stave on Saturday afternoon...
Thanks again for a great time,

Hi,

Boy did we have a great time!  I got to make a bow with David, learn some knapping with Eddie and Steven...got Montana hooked on the flute (hope so anyway cause he sure was getting some awesome notes!).  My wife Barbara enjoyed watching all the bow making, pottery making, knapping, deer tanning and such.  Our pup Sally the Lousiana Catahoula enjoyed sniffing all the bones, hides and all the petting from the kids and adults.  The cloudy sky on Saturday kept us cool and we slept great with the cool nights.  If you missed it this year you sure ought to come next 'cause it was AWESOME!

Hi Pat,

If I knew which flute you would like it would be in the mail tomorrow!  I did find a stave and a blank.  My buddy here (that I have been teaching flute building to) is now going to have to help me try to make an osage bow...but I will probably drive him nuts (like I did David at the knapin) with all the questions/worrying that he will wind up wacking me over the head with it and then it will be another bow busted by me!!!  I am looking for a copperhead to send to it's maker so I can skin it and mail it to you!!  (Reminds me of my other buddy Scott the bone flute maker who got a shipment of ostrich leg bones that UPS called him about.  They said come get these things right now or you can dig them out of the dumpster out back!!!!...seems they had gotten a rather ripe odor on the trip down from PA in August!!)

The knapin was really a lot of fun and we are looking forward to going back next year.

Rand:-)

It's kind of a shame that more interested visitors didn't make it out to see us,
but then again, they'd just be taking up our time, and we had plenty to do! ;)
I think we have a good little get together going and would really like to see it
continue. I had a great time stepping back in time for a weekend and want to
Thank Dick and Jim for putting this show together.

Greetings Dick and Hillbilly -

Dick - Thanks for the potential find on the blue pack. Sounds like the one. Also sounds like a good excuse for me to retrieve it then rock-hunt in NC!! Cool.

Hillbilly - that sweet osage selfbow is getting good exercise and going to take a beeswax finish this week. Aidan (FlyRockFly) loves it and the schoolin' he got from you, KnightD and the others. He is working on some Kanawha Black points and we hope to munch on his first bow kill soon.

Thanks, guys,

Jay

Jay, the back pack is here. There are a couple clamps and some other "stuff" in it. Its here when you want to pick it up. I live about 8 miles further up on Rt 49 from where the event was.
