Last year at the Elm Hall shoot several of us made several elm bows of various sizes and styles to be raffled off. It was a real hit and I think the folks looking to win a bow enjoyed it as much as the bowyers did building them. We are doing it again this year. Same format as last year. Build whatever suits your fancy and we will raffle it off. If you wouldn't mind, PM me if you plan to have a bow(s) ready. Brent's momma has volunteered to "man" the table again this year.
Thanks guys!

Count me in...

Count me in to donate some money to the cause. Put in for everyone of them last year and came up with nothing. Didn't bother me a bit though, goes to a great club. Can't wait to get up there in August. Keep up the good work guys.

Working on mine as we speak
-
Still have a long way to go on mine. Just got the lawn cut and need to get off my butt and go!!!

Roughing out elm and bringing the width and thickness down is one of my least favorite task, the stuff is stringy, tears out easily and I end up using the farriers rasp for the bulk after hatchet work. Wish my neighbor had a band saw. :KN

I know exactly what your saying Greg. I sure is a whole different critter than HHB.

I laid mine out and sawed it out yesterday and plan to do an ALB/Hill style bow with it. I hear that Greg, without a band saw elm is no fun at all. Maybe we need to switch over to HHB bows for the raffle. I know there is plenty of that to.
I used the chunk you gave me at Marshall. The piece I cut went haywire on me and I'm not in the mood for a wrestling match with an elm sapling.

So, there's gonna be another elm bow raffle at Elm Hall, huh?
You fellows are making it harder 'n' harder to stay away. (SH)
-
Yes sir, I'm hoping for at least five bows. Mike I'm sure you'd enjoy it. Elm Hall is all about eating and shooting. Lots of premium targets on two courses, one quite longer than the other.
-
Got mine cut out today... but goin on anniversary vacation for a few days... dive into it next week
-
I let mine sit on the AC register the last few weeks. Feels pretty dry to these hands. I'm shaping the limbs down and hope to have to have it ready for heat by bedtime.
-
Hey Stix and Pearly..
I've always heard ain't true until we see pics. :) :) Look'n good Mr. Badly Bent.

You asked for it big guy ;) . I got farther than expected last night. Roughed it out, floor tillered and toasted. I'm trying for long and narrow on this one. 70" ntn and maybe 1 1/4" wide.
-
Looking good Chris
Hill style eh?
-
That's the plan man. Typical narrow, flat grip.
-
Gained some serious ground last night. Got it ready for a string. I went to grab my best friend Loctite Pro, to add tip overlays, and it was EMPTY!!!! I'll grab some after work and maybe get it finish tillered tonight. This feels like the most promising stick of elm I've ever touched. Its acting and feeling just like HHB, even looks like it on the belly side.
-
Sounds good Pearly
sure wish it was a different weekend but you just never know
-
Ran into a hiccup last week.. my back went out on me.. now on meds and just today started bow work again.. super humid today so didnt do much.. next couple days gonna cool down
-
I got my tips on and ready to tiller. Patrick gave me this wood at Marshall 2016. Cant remember what it is, but its very hard and not crumbly.

Pretty! - OneBow

Saweeet!

Finally got mine braced. 67 ntn I think. should have no problem getting a generic 50@ 28
-
We are at the same point. Im 69" ntn, 53 @ 28. Its sanded and ready to finish. Im going to shoot it a few hundred times and see how it holds up. Then slap a sealer on it. The few shots Ive taken felt good.
-
That settles it. Gonna make the trek.
-
Damn Mike, rub it in will ya. I would love to go to this one and see my new Michigan friends again!
-
You're too easy Mikey! A simple stick of elm and you got suckered right in. You will love this gathering. Its totally geared around friends, food and lots of arra flingin'. We shoot several times a day between the various courses.
I'd love to see you again this summer big Dave.

As the kids would say, awesome bows there Paul and Chris.
Well I haven't been online in some time so I got a lot of catching up to do on the goings on at PA. Miss my friends here and looking forward to seeing a bunch of ya at Elm Hall. Been a busy summer for me but I have managed to wrestle a bow outta my elm stave for the raffle table. Rain delay from work today and I'm about to start putting the finish on it now.
Here's a peek and yes it is a stiff handle with a shelf. ;D Tip of a deer antler for the shelf secured in place with rawhide and glue dipped silk thread. Rawhide lazy man's tip overlays also. Handle will likely remain bare with no covering, going for a somewhat primitive look on this one. Have it shot in and tillered by feel, still haven't taken a single pic of the full draw and when I get the wife to help with that I'm hoping it doesn't look wonky as hell. :)
Good to be back among friends, Greg
-
Gorgeous bow buddy. I'm looking forward to buying a bunch of tickets of my own. The few bows we have should draw plenty of attention. I'm sure Matt will make another(s) knock out to add to the pile. Really looking forward to seeing them all laid out.
-
Matt's stave is from the same tree as yours and mine Chris. Your stave from the top and his and mine from the bottom half of the tree, that'll make 3 from one 5" diameter tree.
-
Greg,
Good to see you back. Man I really like the rawhide thread combo....

I think that piece you gave me could very well be the best piece of elm I've used. It sure held its shape nice all along. That's pretty much how I "grade" bow wood quality.
-
Bows are looking good for the raffle. Be nice to see them up close in a couple weeks. Might have to bring some extra money.

Just like Greg, I've been off the site probably since, Marshall. Have had a busy summer both work and play. Wee-Wicki and myself have been doing a lot of fishing, there's been gardening, home maintenance projects and a slew of other things going on.
Thinking I'll check in to PA this past Friday, I read the Elm Hall Shoot thread and then noticed this thread. Much to my absolute surprise, I had totally forgotten that I committed to making a bow for the Elm Hall - Elm Selfbow Raffle. "Oh no!" (Actually the word was, "Shit") I wasn't even sure where I put the stave that Greg gave me. So after work that evening, I found and got started on the raw stave. This was definitely going to be a bonsai, balls to the wall bow build. I am going to have it done by Wednesday after work, when I arrive at the club to help with the brats.
"What am going I to do?. I've got to make it special, somehow. How do I decorate it? I can't paint very well," I thought. So, I wiped the 1/4" of osage dust off an unmarked box I've had for quite some time. Opened it up and fortunately, what I thought was in there... was in fact in there. You know how it goes. Realizing that this element will add another day to the build time, I calculated it out and thought I might have just enough time to do it. So, this morning before work, I unwrapped what I'd glued up yesterday afternoon. I trimmed it up so that I can allow another day in the sun to dry out. Here's a teaser, of what I have so far. Tonight, I start putting on a finish. It is 45# at 28" by the way...
-
That is gorgeous, Matt! Cant wait to see it. The table is going to look GREAT this year. Thanks for building the bow and not throwing in the hat. I wouldn't expect less from you.
-
Great work guys, I would be thrilled to call any one of those bows my own.
Matt, you may not be able to paint, but judging by that refrigerator, wee-wicki might end up the painter of the family
-
That's a nice tease Matt. I'm really hoping to be there Wednesday through the night till Thursday morning. Can't wait to see it.

Got the finish coats on the Elm Hall Elm bow. Now, off to the club at 5:00pm. Will put the grip on and make a string tomorrow. Just in the nick of time...

@ PEARL DRUMS: what is the tip material you used??
Mighty fine work!
