I found this wild growing apple some years ago in the woods. The wonderful red-brown-orange color on the back appeared soon after debarking, no dye here. It has eight nipple knots on the back, is that cool? The little sapling had a diameter of about 2”, full width can be seen at the handle. It has grown dead straight but with a good propeller twist. I heated out some amount of the twist, but some is remaining. I made a compromise to minimize that twist and accepted heavy grain run out, the string shows the grain direction. Cross section is lenticular. I did some corrections with the heat gun, alignment, untwisting. I gave her long fades, widest part of limb is 7” from handle. The handle is straight and covered with cherry bark, glued on with TB3 after 15 min cooking. The cord is hemp. Tip overlays is two tone (brown and nearly transparent) cow horn.
She turned out as a surprisingly good shooter, apple is definitely class A bow wood.

Never too many bow pics from you, Simon. This is another beauty! 8)

Nice bow Simon. Apple, cherry, you should call that one fruit salad. All it needs is a peach pit arrow shelf.

I wonder what the speed of that is. Do you have a chrono?
-
Beautiful bow Simson as are all of yours I've seen. "One sometimes two a month" very impressive.
-
Seems so simple, but with all the twist and knots, it would be very challenging. Incredible work
-
This is my new favorite Simson bow! Outstanding Sir! I really like the old school long fades and classic grip style. The cherry bark grip just put it over the top for me. Josh
-
Both apple and plum are on my to do list. This bow proves why.
-
Gorgeous bow :)

Aaron thanks for reminding me to sign the bow and for your naming suggestion. Fruit salad is the right name for her, hope you don't mind the Italian way Tutti Frutti.

To be honest, I thought it was a challenge. Good go good or not ....
THANKS A LOT GENTLEMEN
all comments appreciated!

Amazing work as usual simson
-
Another absolute stunner. Very impressive specs and no surprise, it is gorgeous. I love the colors showing in the wood in the Tutti Fruiti picture.
Always good to see a heavy bow demonstrating that grain can run out in some woods.
-

If you are somewhat tech savvy I could post how to do it with an audio recording and audacity?

That wood is beautiful, Simon! Do you think you might have problems with the heavy draw weight and those lateral stars and lines coming out of the knots?
And,,,you ever think about coming over for the Tenn. Classic? ::)
-
Beautiful tips!
-
Just beautiful Simson. Such a nice bend and weight with all those knots and run off. Challenging yes I would think so. I've been eyeing up a branch on my dad's apple tree I'm sure gets in his way for mowing lawn that looks like it might have a bow in it.

Thats a stout stick at 70# Simon. Excellent work on that piece of fruitwood, looks great all around.
-
Another great looking bow. I've been on the lookout for a good apple stave for years.
-
I've never heard of a bow made with Apple before. Definitely a nice surprise for me! I'm really liking the handle as it compliments the color of the wood beautifully! As usual, awesome work Simon!
-
Your bows are just amazing. Art and function at it's best.
-
Yes that is a very nice bow. It is a shame apple likes to check so badly....I've got 3 pairs of pristine billets that I need to find inspiration for!

Carson, I don't like that heavy run out - but couldn't avoid. So I thought it could hold or not, it did and it is o.k.
Perhaps we can risk a good amout more on those things, who knows.
@gfugal: thanks for posting, but I don't have all that tech experience. I go into my shop and use hand tools 8)
I wait til I have access to a chrony and will report.

Some day I will knock at your door Eddie!
The cracks are drying cracks and absolut stable, the limb is natural thicker here - this might solve the problem.I filled the biggest crack with thinny ca glue, just in case.

Mike, this one was a sapling of 2" dia. I brought it down to near dimensions soon after harvesting. I think this helps avoiding checking.
Thanks again guys!
-
Love it Simon, especially the cherry bark grip. I too have made one apple bow, and liked it very much, but did not temper it and wish I had...next time.
-
Absolutely fantastic craftsmanship! John
-
this is amazing! I have a friend taking down a apple tree I am going to snag a few staves for sure now

Just saw your first posted bow, curious what you are doing with your apple. Be careful with seasoning, it likes to check!
-
Great looking bow! I love looking at all your bows, you are definitely an incredible bowyer and artist! Just one question:
What makes you decide on a final draw weight on a bow? Is it the stave you are working with or just intuition what would be the best fit for the particular wood you are using?
Happy New Year!

Phillip, in this case I just wanted to see what is possible with apple wood. This is no more my comfort draw weight
That bow was not thought for a special recipient ...
-
Great profile and full draw!love the long fades!
-
DIG IT! Apple has all the properties, except for how hard it it to find the right stave! It's like nature made fantastic bow woods twisty on purpose just to make us wistful. Nice execution, esp at a higher weight.
-
well made....its all been said.!!!

simply beautiful

That bow is really something special.

??? missed this one, guess while I was off for Christmas, beautiful bow, sounds like plenty of weight to get the job done. Nice work love the character. :)

Wow, I love the knots in the natural wood. We have wild apple trees in our woods; I would bet that after seeing this, my husband (Fats) will try that wood. Love the cherry bark handle and the hemp twine. Beautiful!!
-
Awesome bow Simson!
Just beautiful!

-
Wow. Awesome bow! I admire your work Simson. Truly inspirational. Out of all your artwork, I've gotta say this one might have just taken the top spot in my eyes. I like everything about it. Seventy pounds too.. my kinda weapon right there.
-
Nice work
-
Awesome bow.. love the smooth width taper
-
Thanks again guys for that nice compliments!
Look around for apple - it's nice and really good bow wood.
