A few of you may have seen me working on this one at Marshall. I wanted to make this one for my cousin. I'm his elder by one month. He has to respect me. We grew up pretty much inseparable. He's lived in California for most of his adult life but comes home every year. He is in around about way to blame for me becoming addicted to all this Primitive stuff. I thought I'd return him the favor. I think I'm going to call this one Deep Roots. He just wants it simple. We'll see. So far it's just naked but he shot it a bunch last night. He's been shooting fg for a little over a year now. I think he's going to be shooting this till he wears it out.
It's 68"ntn around 62@29 HHB
Enough talk just have fd picture

Sweet one bjrogg.A good workhorse of a bow too.
-
I'll bet he'll never go back to FG after getting used to that beauty. Good medicine too shooting a bow made for you by family. :)
Great work as always BJ
-
That is an excellent tiller. Great bow! Jawge

Excellent bow BJ. Very nice, beautiful tiller. What a great way to "pay" him back.

Thanks Stick Bender, I sure hope your right. I'd really like this one to last him along time.
Thanks Half Eye, I really don't have much to compare it to. I did make one out of Ash and one of Elm. I kinda goofed up the Elm. I've made enough of these now that I almost know what to expect from them. I'm happy with them.
Thanks Ed, I'm banking on the workhorse version. I doubt it'll receive any tender treatment. The first thing he did was get a huge smile turn into Super Man and draw it to his ear and hold it. Had to be all of 31". He knows better to. I told him I was glad it passed that test but not to do that again or Super Man might have a broken or damaged bow.
Thanks Jeff, you are right all he wants to do is shot this thing now. The fg is just sitting in the corner. He was a bit nervous about shooting off the knuckles and I told him I could still build a arrow shelf. After shooting it he just couldn't stop saying how much he liked it and not to put a shelf on.
Thanks Kyle, you know what they say about paybacks. He is planning on coming back this fall to hunt. I made him a few arrows to. A couple targets and a stone point.
Thanks Knapper, Helmet and Bob and thanks for looking. I'll add some more pictures when I finish her up.
Thanks Pearl, thought you might remember this one. I didn't want to finish it until he got here and gave it a pull. Seems pretty fair tiller and he says the weight is perfect. I did take just a little off the top limb out of the fades and mid limb. Have to have him shoot it some more.

good lookin bow buddy

I like quotations of naming the bows bjrogg.Kinda brings a person closer to the bow in a sense. My neighbor who shot compounds checked my bows out once.I told him the process first of tillering and the danger of overdrawing etc.
What does he do...He yanks it clear back to his earlobe.A good 30 + inches. Then says yep it felt like 58#'s like I told him it was.It took another strong 1/4" of set doing that.
Another situation....Some Amish were looking at a bow of mine.I thought I was smart and handed it to him unstrung.Nope.He takes it bends it over his knee backwards for the heck of it.I stopped him then asked him what it was he was trying to find out?He did'nt know for sure because they don't understand.
You'll have to be the diplomatic promoter of self bows in your family bjrogg.Educating them on things.

Really nice bow! And since you are waaayyy older just order him to go primitive from now on >:D

Thanks guys I sure appreciate you all looking.
Thanks DVS
Thanks Paul, they usually do. It's always nice to be able to see em in person.
GlisGlis, I think he'll get along fine off the knuckles. He really like the way the handle fits him.
Thanks Stixnstones
Yes Ed, he knows I told him. He just got over come with, well whatever. He knows I'm serious and that just because it doesn't break doesn't mean it's not hurting it.
Leonwood I don't think I'll have to order him. He really is jeeked about how his bow shoots.
Thanks Pappy I did get it sanded, wiped some stain on and one coat of tru oil on for now. Got some ideas yet I might try.
Thanks DuBois, Hawkdancer and Aaron

My cousin I made this bow for told me if I got a deer with my bow last year he was going to come back to hunt here this fall. I finished up his "deep roots" bow and a stone point and practice point arrow. He's been shooting it a lot since he got back and hunting every day with it. So far he hasn't gotten a shot at a deer yet, but I told him that can change in a second. He has a fiberglass takedown bow he has been shooting for almost two years. He just can't believe how nice his Selfbow shoots. He said it so much smoother and quieter than his fg. He just wanted it simple but we both really like how it turned out. The pictures don't do it justice but I'll post them anyway.
Here she is all prettied up "Deep Roots"

Absolutely beautiful. You can just tell that's an amazingly well made bow with some serious family medicine in it. I'm sure you two will be enjoying a delicious venison meal real soon. :OK
-
Thanks Jeff. If you get PA magazine, this is my cousin that found the arrow head when he was five. It would be so cool if he could harvest a deer from the same farm with his Selfbow and Stone Point. Be nice to bring it full circle.
Bjrogg
PS if you don't usually get PA I'd recommend getting this issue. It's a good one.

Great looking bow BJ. That artwork is awesome.

Thanks Paul, Clint, Marc and Bill. I enjoyed making this one personal for my cuz. We go back along way. I really enjoy watching him shoot it and a bunch of his nephews and their buddies shot it too. So much better than when someone just hangs em on the wall.

Way to pass the hobby on BJ. Being an ambassador of this hobby you never know where a seed might grow of interest.Too many times around here they would rather just buy one. Then when they think about that they find out FG bows can be gotten very cheap too.
-
that bow really looks awesome, BJ. You did a great job. I like the airbrushing
-
Another beautiful bow for the farm boy.
-
That came out great bj, what part of calif is he from anyway

Thanks everyone we are telling Hunting stories right now. He sadly told me he broke his stone point arrow. He did it shooting at a four pointer on his dad's farm. The same farm he found a arrowhead on when he was five years old. He got a quartering away shot from 10 feet. The buck heard him when his bow rubbed some brush. He shot as it started to bolt. He hit it to far forward and high. It is one of those sweet but sad hunting stories. He is totally hooked now though. I kept telling him when he wasn't getting anything close enough, that's hunting you just never know when one will magically appear. Sure wish he could have got him. I gave him two more stone point arrows, he's got one more day.
Bubby he is from Roseville close to Sacramento. I've been out to se him twice. We went to the Redwoods camping and drove back down the coast really some beautiful land. I've always been meaning to ask you where you hang your hat in California.
Thanks again everyone

Thanks Aaron, Thanks Hawkdancer, my cousin went home without any venison but with a strong desire to come back and try it again. He surprised me at how hard he actually hunted and I'm pretty proud of him. I know a few other guys that where going to go the traditional route that just couldn't do it when hunting season came. It's like Clay Hayes say, "You've just gotta be willing to watch that trophy buck walk away just out of range". My cousin learned a lot this year about hunting this style and hunting in general. I think the most important thing he learned was that it's not easy but it isn't impossible either. He knows how it feels now to wait for that animal to walk past you at extremely close range. He knows how it feels to try to draw your bow when it would be easier to throw a stone at them. He knows how exciting it can be and he knows he wants to try it again. I have another buddy that hunted with his Selfbow to. He also really enjoyed it, I'm hoping he can experience these feelings to. Shotgun season ended here now it's muzzleloader season. The deer on my property have all gone nocturnal but I'm hoping that between a little less pressure and the colder temperatures that are coming I can still fill my tag. It's gonna be difficult though. I have no regrets. I very much enjoyed my hunting season this year. I'd put it right up there with the best ever. It's still not over so maybe just maybe.

Thanks Gutshot, I have several bows I'm pretty attached to. This is one of them. I'm really happy my cousin feels the same way about it.
