Post by: Ryano on October 29, 2008, 08:51:25 am
Thanks guys. I'm a still a little bit in shock. I got him yesterday morning about 9:00am Had been sitting in my tree stand all morning in the rain and around 39 degree's with about 30 mile an hour winds. About 8:30 or so I was about ready to give up for the day and call it quits and go home and get warm, but I kept telling myself its the best time of the year, you need to stay in the woods as long as possible. Well about a half hour later I noticed some movement behind my tree stand and it was already to close to stand up for fear of spooking what ever it was. So I held perfectly still just turning my head to look thinking I could get a shot sitting down if nessasary if the deer continued down the trail it was on it would be about a 5 yard broad side shot. Well when he poked his head up over the creek bank all I saw was he had a good rack and then I stoped looking at the horns and started trying to visualize the shot. Well he got about 2 steps away from my shooting lane and locked up. He began checking the wind and actualy looked up at me briefly. He didnt see me but he definetley got my wind. He started to back up real slow and proceeded to turn around and head back out the way he came in but not before stoping briefly under a helock tree giving the time I needed to stand up and get my bow pointed in his direction. He then took about two more steps and was in the open quarting away about 12 to 15 yards. I came to full draw and released my Ramin wood arrow tipped with a 125 magnus head and it met its mark true. It hit him about three ribs up from the back and angled forward striking a rib on the other side near the shoulder blade. He ran about 80 to 100 yards. Not a easy tracking job as there was very little blood with no exit hole and the wet leaves make it really hard to see the blood that is there. Well I had called a good hunting buddie as soon as I hit him asking for some help tracking him. I had made it to the point I had last seen him from my stand when my buddie called to tell me he was at my truck. So I decided to mark the blood and go after him for help. Well on my way out to find him I looked up on the creek back and there he was not 30 from where I had just quit tracking. I screamed like a little kid with excitement! He was much bigger than I had even realized. Wow what a day, what a hunt. I will remember it for the rest of my life.

That's a cool story Ryan! I'm proud for you that you got him! Have you weighed him yet? What was the inside spread on him?
Title: Re: My biggest buck ever...selfbow kill.
Post by: Ryano on October 29, 2008, 09:19:11 am
Greg, I didnt weigh him got no way to weigh one that heavy and I skinned him and caped him out last night. I'd guess him between 180 and 200 field dressed.  Its got a 17 1/2" inside spread, over twenty on the outside. The two long top tines are 9" long.

BOTM and that buck.  Oh man, didja buy a lottery ticket that morning?

Sounds like luck wasn't the only thing you had in your favor.  Good scouting, critical placement of the stand, knowing your shooting lanes, control of your emotions to make the shot, persistence in uncomfortable conditions, and patience.  You worked hard and it payed off in spades this time.  I'm happy for you as well as sick with envy!

Pat, no I should call the taxidermist and ask him to save me a jaw bone. We are guessing he's a 4 1/2" year old deer.

Post by: Ryano on October 30, 2008, 09:59:07 pm
Thanks a lot everyone! You guys are great!
Shannon, I'm trying to find a place to get it scored around here.  Don't they have to dry for a while before it can really be scored for the book?
Title: Re: My biggest buck ever...selfbow kill.
Post by: Keenan on October 30, 2008, 10:17:09 pm
Has to dry at least a few months. Are you going to get the head mounted? If so it will probably be 6 months to a year to get it back from the taxidermist. At least that it what it is around here.
You will also need to find out who is a registered official to measure in your area. Talk to the fish and game department. Again great job and nice buck Ryan.

Wow Ryan! what a buck! You gotta be proud of that one, and look at all the boppers and knife handles ::). That would be plenty of mass if it'd been killed around here - I've been offline for a couple of days and look what happens ;D. Congrats bud!
Title: Re: My biggest buck ever...selfbow kill.
Post by: FlintWalker on October 30, 2008, 10:47:54 pm
They have to dry for at least 60 days before they can be officially scored.  I don't know how fast your taxidermist is, but if it's gonna be a few months before he can get to it, there's no reason why you can't keep the antlers with you till he needs them.
Back when I was doing taxidermy part time, I had some customers keep their racks with them for a while, especially the bigger ones.
It's nice to have them to look at and show friends.
Also, if you think it will be borderline on making 125", you should have it scored as soon as the 60 days are up.  They will continue to shrink long after 60 days.

Post by: Ryano on October 31, 2008, 08:31:11 am
Thanks guys.

Keenan, thats about what it is here too. He said may or june.

Cowboy, I got plenty of smaller deer antler to cut up for such things. This baby going on my wall.

Shannon, ya I already asked him about it. He said I could come pick'em up anytime. I wish I could have packed him up in dry ice and sent him to you....I'd rather of paid you to do it, but the shipping I think would have killed me. You think I should call the game warden to find out where to get it officialy scored?
Title: Re: My biggest buck ever...selfbow kill.
Post by: Big A on October 31, 2008, 10:29:34 am
Ryan I think if you look on the Pope &Young web page they give you a list of the nearest scorer in your state. You just call one and setup a time to meet and they will help you get it scored and in the book when it makes it.

Ryano,

That's Matt from Hawkeye.  He killed the monster bear with his osage recurve earlier this year!

I printed your photo and showed it off to all of the guys I hunt with this weekend.  I look at it each time I go out for inspiration.  Someday that will be me!

Ya Glenn. I figured that out when he posted under his normal handle. That was a nice bear Matt killed. Congrads again Matt.
Inspiration? "Like if he can do it anyone can" kind of inspiration? Lol. Good luck buddy. It just takes a lot of time in the woods and a lot of luck.  ;)  ;D

Post by: Ryano on November 19, 2008, 02:12:07 pm
Thanks Hardaway. For those of you who were wondering I had the buck green scored. It grossed 145 3/8" and had 10" of deductions for a net of 135 3/8"  Should make the pope and young 125" standard easily.  I never thought I'd shoot a pope and young deer, let alone with a selfbow. Guess it goes to show you anything can happen if you put enough time in the woods. Good luck to all the rest of you guys out there, hang in there and try not to get to frustrated. It only takes a couple seconds to turn a crappy hunt into the hunt of a lifetime!
