-
It's a tickle stick for lobstering. :D
-
pea shooter
-
its made from elder so if ya put it in your mouth you could drop dead.
-
Spider web stick ???If it is ,I don't make a special one.Or,a shooting lane sight stick. :)
-
its made from elder so if ya put it in your mouth you could drop dead.
I was going to guess you were using it to smoke wacky weed. ;)
Does it have a point that slides into the hallow end? The point stays in and the shaft falls loose when you shoot. Justin
-
Does the other end have fletching? ;D Maybe you have a small saw blade that fits in the end so you can reach just out of reach branches that need cutting. ;D Pat
-
28" elder, Most likely 1/2" to 3/4" wide. Light weight for its size.
I am stumped??? ??? ??? ???
Let me think about this for a while.......
Hay, Look close. Is this the nock end we are looking at????????
David
-
He uses it to suck termites and ants out of holes in stumps when he gets the munchies while he's out huntin' ;D ;D
-
it's a stick.
duh!
-
thats some funny stuff but nope. i'll give it till tomorrow and then let ya'll know. by the way the end thats not showing is just a stick .
-
OK! This my Guess
This is a "Spook Arrow".
Used to spook game animals so they will change direction and hopefully come by close enough for a shot.
David
-
na i just use a regular arra for that. lol
-
abo pixie stick? ;D.....Brian
-
I'll guess it's a hand drill shaft that you can chuck different fire tips or drills into.
-
ding ding ding we have a winner. just like hillbilly said.
-
Hand Drill.........
Did not know they had to be that long.
I have a bow drill that I use to fires with.
My best time is 1 min. and 15 sec.
I can see how a hand drill would be less cumberson to carry arround.
Do you carry a fire board with you as well??
Post a photo of something else. This is fun. ;D
David
-
Ok here is one . What is it (name) and what is it used fer ? clue, been used fer thousands of years ;D...bob

David
-
Ok heres a close up of the "thingy". I made it outta a small piece of osage ;D...bob
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Is it some type of primitive release?
-
Nope...bob
-
Some sort of Thimble used to push heavy needles through thick material???
David
-
I would guess that your thumb fits in the depression on the back, with your fingers curled around the pointy end :)
-
Nope not either. Will post answer as ta what it si tomorrow ;D...bob
-
some type of scraper for cleaning marrow out of cracked bones or along a fishs spine :-\
-

primitive guitar pick ;D
-
Nope but I LIKE primitive geetar pic ! :D ;D ;D.....bob
-
A piece of wood you whittled up last night to keep a bunch of rednecks in suspense. ;D Justin
-
Used to straighten cane arrows after they are heated by rubbing it agianst the cane where it needs straightening for compresion? Or, a burnishing tool used to burnish wood say as in Bow backs and bellies?
-
Replacement fang for your ol'curr....Brian
-
Shoot...I see it now,..its an old cornnut ya found under the truck seat! :P
-
Nope but I really likes ole"replacement fang fder ya 'cur dog ! :D :D :D................bob
-
Is it a cam or a 'dog' ,like I would use to tighten a sinew cable on a cable backed bow?
That would explain the opposing curves.
Ralph
-
As Jamie would say "ding, ding, ding a weiner uh I mean a wimmer uh a winner !" ;D Thats what it is . Its called a "FID". Ancient ones have been found that were made outta ivory and walrus tusk. It was a normal tool fer ancient eskimos ta have one with their cable backed bows. It increases the tension on a cable backed bow by twistin so as ta get a higher draw weight. When finished with bow you untie the string on cables and untwist cables with "fid "ta relieve tension on bow. ;) ;D..bob
-
Ok youse guys ! ;D Here is another. What is it, what's its name and what does it do? Its a modern one made outta metal 'cause I coulnd't find primitive one I made outta wood in "gayrage" :'(......bob
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Whow ,I know'ed something . Kinda not fair though cuase I made a cable backed bow... Give us another one.
Ralph
-
Sure its fair ! ;D Made this one when I made cable backed bowsd, another one up already ;D.bob
-
Hey Jamie, yer next ! gat any ? ;D.bob
-
I think I know what this one is too. But I spent a lot of time as a kid with my brother playing Tom and Huck. ;D
We only had an old mattress fer a raft though.
Ralph
-
yup ;D
-
Its called a ducks bill and it goes on the end of a push pole to propel a shallow draft boat. ;D ::)
A friend used to go deep into swampy area where the cypress trees grew so densely that he could find appropriate trees to make push poles. He would use copper nails and wire to attach the "Y" portion to the bottom out of the top, smaller diameter portion of the pole. I used the one he gave me all the time with my 13' Boston Whaler when casting for shrimp or flounder gigging. Pat
-
"DIng-ding-ding a weiner uh a winner !" yup its a "Ducks bill" goes on end of pole like Pat said sos ya can pole dugout. Seminoles dont use paddles but poles ta motor down swamp creeks by polin. This is a modern one but all wood ones can be made very easily with stone tools. Ifn ya ever try ta pole in a swamp ya find out real quick that ya kill ya self tryin ta keep pole from sinkin in creek swamp bottom. Youse guys an gals are good ! ;D Yer up jamie ! ;D....bob
-
why is this a good skinning knife. ive got another one i have to take a pic of later but this one will do. justin i cant spin a drill right now cause of my hand but i'll get pics of the plug and show ya.
-
Looks to be obsidian, with a flat spot for yer finger to rest on so its basically an extension of the pointer finger
the small diameter handle also makes it easy to control.
-
Its sharp ;D...........bob
-
i try to never use the knife aside from the initial cuts. bob i dont knap that good so im not sure about the sharp part. ;D
-
Because you broke one ear off while making a point so it wouldn't work for a point. ;D Justin
-
Try just a flake! Its so much sharper!!!
-
Hmmm.. long handle ta use 2 hands ta make initial cuts. Er maybe put long handle along forearm fer stability while ya make initial cuts ? ;D..........bob
-
Gut hook? ;D for unzipping the belly. Pat
-
all right sorry guys got busy . real life sucks dont it. lol.
its not the knife that makes it a good skinner its the butt of the handle. the rounded end works great even on the toughest little buggers to seperate the membrane from the skin without scoring the hide like a blade will. cowboy just posted a couple knives with antler handles. i was caping a deer for a friend and used an antler tip to push through the nape and a small blade once i got into the head so now i round off the ends and it works great. peace
-
Ok a quickie. ;D What is it used fer an what is it called. Has a name ! ;) ;D...bob
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Saw! Used for sawing! ;D ::) Possibly for sawing through pelvic bone and breast bone while dressing a deer or hog. ;D Pat
-
ITS A SAW ! hahahahaha! Yup sure is but nope not fer that stuff ! ; Osage handle and this one has artificial sinew wrap ;) ;D..bob
-
It's called a sawzall blade stuck in a piece of wood and it's used for making one-piece things into more than one piece, or for making larger holes out of small ones.. ;D
-
It's called a sawzall blade stuck in a piece of wood and it's used for making one-piece things into more than one piece, or for making larger holes out of small ones.. ;D
Hahahaha! nope Steve but close! ;D ;D....bob
-
For cutting string nocks in bow tips or arrows. ;D Pat
-
arra gatherin?
-
combination saw/ rabbit stick ;D
-
Nope, nope, nope ! ;D Not fer any of that stuff. Has a name and it aint SAW ! ;D ;D ;D............bob
-
it's name is Larry ?!
-
Hahahaha ! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D nope !hahahahaha.........bob
-
Its fer when ya drop a tree on yer leg ya can saw it off. The leg that is. Oh wait its not a saw :-\
Is it a toothing plane for roughing up the surface before glueing?
-
Saw off what YER LEG ! :o Yup its a saw but its got a name, an it aint "Larry". Used fer somethin. ;D. Answer tommorrow probably ;D.....bob
-
Is this your toothing plane to prep a bow for glue up. Justin
-
Nope not a toothing plane. ;D..........bob
-
It's a called a "thingamajig-that-you-use-to-trim-your-pet-alligator's-toenails" ;D
-
Got a pet gator named "Gabrielle" but thats another story. Hahahaha ! Not a bad idea Steve ! But nope. ;D...bob
-
A thingamabob to comb out your sinew with? Or maybe to comb the winter coat out of Fido ;D
-
Nope Paul but I like it as well as Steve's ! ;D............bob
-
OK, its traditional name is a "float." Its used to saw a slot in a handle the same size as the tang (thickness) fer a knife blade.Cuts on up stroke not down. Is narrowed in front to fit in hole ya dirll first. On this one the blade (thickness) is same size as tangs I usually make. Have others with different thickness. Heres pic again. Thx fer laughs y'all. ;D ;D Yer up Jamie !.....bob
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Bob, will you put something next to the float for a size comparison in another pic. Thanks, ;) pat
-
Here ya go Pat ! ;).............bob
-
Thanks Bob. Bigger than I thought. Neat idea! ;D Pat
-
I got BIG hands. Can see handle is 5" long ;D........bob
-
I knew the answer all along bob, I just like to appear dense ;D It worked very good now didn't it. ;)
-
here ya go
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/coyotebow/what%20the/cutepics002.jpg)
-
Looks like something from a dumpster behind Hong Kong Fuey's. yeeeeech
-
For sizing and burnishing arrows? Looks like there is a hole thru the top of it...is there?.....Brian
-
Looks like a knee joint out of a deer leg bone.
-
WOW ! How does life go on without 'em ? ;D ;D ;D ;D...............bob
-
Is it used for straightening arrows the same way the hook straightener
is used?
Sean
-
no holes in it and nothing to do with arras. it is a knee bone though.
-
Bow drill bearing/snack?
-
ding ding ding weiner!!!!. its a snack. ;D its a hand hold for a bow drill. also works real good as a hammer for knapping
-
.........................Ok heres one. 3 different types of cane. Can ya name em' ? ;D......bob
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
short skinny green stuff, longer orange stuff and short yella stuff
-
................................................ ;D ;D ;D...bob

Arundaneria tecta, Sasa japonica and some kind of bamboo ???. Pat
-
tonkin bamboo , river cane ,and moso bamboo ?
Ralph
-
Hey Pat.............bottom one is same fire saw stuff that I sent you and Steve (hillbilly). ;) ;D.........bob
-
Middle one is Tonkin,I gave it to you,ha,ha, ;D
-
Nope sorry Eddie middle one is not tonkin and ya didn't give me any of them . I harvested them all myself. ;) ;D.....bob
-
:'( ???
-
Bottom to top.
Bamboo, River Cane, Switch Cane.
How did i do??????
David
-
OK, I'll play. Top down:
Arundanaria tecta (switch cane) or possibly Bambusa
Japanese arrow bamboo (Psuedosasa japonica)
Either Phyllostachys spp. or Arundanaria gigantea (giant river cane)
-
.........Ok, ding ! ding ! weiner, sorta ! ;D Hillbilly (Steve) an Ridge Runner are correct 'bout bottom one. Its Arundinaria gigantia also called giant cane. Patch I get it from has some that are 25' tall. Second one is also Arundinaria gigantea but what is the species called ? Hint: I harvest it in No. Fla. and it grows all over Va., No. an So. Carolina an Tennessee. Rattlers (canebrake an diamondbacks-eastern) luv the ground litter under it fer huntin' an shade as do coral snakes and copperheads. :o ;D What is top one ? Any guesses ? Hint: Its also called "Teatree Bamboo" ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D.......bob
-
Oops ! Didnt see Welch 2's reply. ding, ding another weiner ! ;D Top one is indeed Tonkin cane, also called "teatree" bamboo. Supposedly grows only in china but I found a Huge wild patch here in "boonies'. :D Fer my $ makes the best arrows of all the canes even bambusa. Talkin' about bambusa I haven't forgot Justin. So, What is 2nd one ? ;D...........bob
-
Ok here are a coupla more that arent cane ....duh ! And somebody DONT say they are arras ! LOL ! ;D...bob
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
uuuh.........sticks! ;D Am I right?
Are you having a difficult time getting straight answers from guys like us? ::) ;D
Sean
-
The bottom one is gall berry(Ilex sp. possibly glabra) Pat
-
Naw they aint sticks they is arras dude ! hahahaha-- no worries ;D....bob
-
BOB, you even got it wrong. They aren't arrows, they are shafts. ;D Justin
-
Justin I SAID arras NOT arrows ! Hello ya there ! ;D.bob
-
I'll guess from the top , holly ,eastern red cedar, and flowerin' dogwood.
Ralph
-
;D Bottom is a glabra very good Pat. Bougainvillea glabra, family nyctaginaceae( four-o-clock). Ita a evergreen an can be a tree bush er vine and has THORNS. An I mean THORNS ! ;D So what are #1 an #2 not holly an erc ralph, sorry.....bob
-
Top is salt cedar. Justin
-
Ding, ding, ding ! Another weiner, ah I mean winner ! ;D It is indeed Tamarix sp. also commonly called salt cedar. Very invasive an considered a weed in western part of u.s. Makes good arras but was not here in u.s. when n.a.'s were makin' arras from canes. So whats # 2 ;D......bob
-
#2 looked like ERC to me also. Maybe its another Juniper...or maybe Australian Pine. Pat
-
Pat I think Bob threw in the color to fool you. I bet it is dogwood or something obvious. Justin
-
Kinda looks like sour wood. Eddie
-
Is it a split wood shaft with a touch of heartwood or a shoot?
-
.................................................. Ding, ding, ding another weiner AND I mean weiner ! Ah winner, Eddie Parker. Yup its Oxydendrum aboreum er commonly called "lily of valley" tree, sorrel tree an sourwood. Shame on yer Pat ya use em' all the time. ;D .........Yer up Jamie.....bob
-
I think the dark spot was throwing us off. I make a lot of sourwood arrows, don't think I've seen one with red in it like that.
-
Ya know Steve, Its not really red, guess the camera made it look that way. Its kinna a dull brownish color. Of the other dozen er so arras I have they all have the same colorin' streak in em'. ???.........bob
-
Now that I look close I can see the leaf scars. The color stripe is a great camo. I missed it completely. ::)
Pat
-
A lot of times with sourwood shoots cut in the summer, you get a cool streaky purple-ish color.
-
Ok Jamie hasnt chimed in yet, so I will post this. What is it and dont say acorns. ;D From what tree and whats its latin name ?....bob
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
thems curns. :D
-
Ah dont say acorns er curns ! ;D ;D ;D ;D :-*........................bob
-
How about a size reference. ::) Overcup oak, Quercus lyrata Justin
-
Darn, one of those is hanging over my truck in the driveway.Always just called it an oak.By the way,Deer will not hardly eat them down here.Lets try Quercus virginiana,or the Live Oak.
-
They resemble white oak acorns (Quercus alba), but seem to have more tapered bases than our white oaks. I'm not familiar with all your Floridian oak trees, though.
-
Ahhh NUTS!!! ;D
-
Quercus virginiana, Live Oak. Located from SE Virginia along the coastal areas down to and around Fla and west to Texas. In the S.E. US it was prised for wooden ship building. The limbs were picked for their shapes, cut to actual size, drilled , mortised and tenons cut then it was placed in the salt marsh for a year where it mineralized. It was cut beforehand because it couldn't be cut after it came out of the salt marsh. ;D Pat
-
Ding-ding-ding a weiner ! Eddie is correct its Quercus virginiana er live oak. Pat has most of the "just the facts maam". Eddie is right deer down here will hardly eat em. Game down here luvs Quercus laurifolia (laurel oak) 'curns aka swamp laurel oak an water oak. Acorn flour made from live oak acorns seems ta have more tannic acid than laurels maybe thats why ? Hawgs, deer,putt-putt's, treerats, quail an ducks luv em'. Live oaks are often used as ormanmental trees in "surburban" (GASP) >:( neighborhoods nowdays............bob
-
The live oak is probably my favorite tree of all. The deer, and most other critters, love to eat the live oak acorns, then the water oaks. We had very few white oaks there and deer wouldn't touch them. Pat
-
Pat, you live oak acorns must taste different than ours.I bit into one once and couldn't spit it out fast enough and long enough. :D Deer won't hardly touch them here.
-
Eddie, There are plenty of things that deer find paletable that I don't and vice versa. The wood ducks and mallards loved them also. Pat
-
Here is the secret to eating Acorn, and many other nuts. Leeching! You nead to grind them to a flour put them in a cheese cloth bag and soak them in water a few times rinsing between soaking. This leeches out the tannins and makes for oh so good nut flours!! ;D
