Title: Correcting Bow Set?
Post by: apg on September 13, 2019, 05:58:12 am
Hi,

I've made a short 60" Osage bow for hunting, and it's having a lot of set taking place. Anyone know if heating it now will help it? Or any other tricks?

I'm finished the bow, but I'm worried more and more set will take place. It's been backed with Sturgeon, and it's a nice 30" draw @ 52lb.

Why did it take set can we see a full draw pic? Also what do you mean by a lot how much exactly? I dont know much about Osage but 30" draw seems like a lot for a 60" bow. When I build my bows If i dont like the amount of set I am getting I check my tiller if its good Ill heat treat it. But I usually dont let it take too much before I do that.

The bow is too short for the draw length IMO.  You can temper the belly and that may help some, but the skin on the back could suffer if your not careful.  Did you heat temper already?

Add 8-10" ntn to it and you will be all set. Its way too short for your draw. The stiff handle and reflexed tips take away 12-14" of limb. The fact it hasn't broke tells me the tiller must be pretty close. I wouldn't try to do anything to it, except maybe find a recipient with a 23-25" draw.

I won't make a bow for a 30" draw under 68" long, I did it several times and all failed within a few months.

Already heat treated before attaching the sturgeon. I’ll shoot with it as is then, and next time make a longer bow. My 66” bow doesn’t have an inch of set, and it’s a 30” draw.

Keep shooting it till it breaks.  My favorite bow has about that much set, and is also a little too short (62 or 63 inches for 29 inches of draw).  It looks about like that one does, but it still hits hard and is accurate, even if it isn't as good as the same bow would have been at 26 inches and less set.  If it gets worse, it gets worse. it's just a stick of wood, and you can now build another.  That's the joy of it.
