Well, I finally got my Hackberry finished. I'll be shooting it at Pappy's shoot tomorrow. It's 61" nock to nock and pulls 50# @ 27"
The tip overlays are Burmese Red Wood. I coated the bow in Red Mahogany stain then sanded it until the stain was still in the grain then coated it in a tung oil / Linseed oil mix and finished with Tru-oil

do you have to aply tue oil over the stain? or could you just use beeswax and buff it out?

Ranger, You need to keep me posted on how that Hackberry holds up after a few hundred arras cuz if it'll last without getting too much set you will have inspired me to give hackberry a try. I know its a lighter wood density wise but being related to elm it might just do it. You will have succesfully proven to me that it is worth the effort. The reason I have such a keen interest is that I have tons of the straightest hackberry all over down here and I have always just walked right on by it thinking that it would be a sub par bow wood. The job you did on that one is as good as it gets in my book. Congrats and like I said, let me know. Danny
P.S. what are the dimensions at the fades and what limb design did you use? Is it pyramid or parallel to midlimb and then taper? How is the cast? Whats your opinion on how it was to work with? How does it respond to heat? I know...lots of questions, sorry.

Hopefully these pictures will help. These were taken after shooting about 40 arrows then shooting the course today (20 more arrows) then coming home and shooting about 40 more. So this profile is after roughly 100 arrows. It is a pyramid but once I finished it I increased the taper at the end of the limbs. I took the nocks down even more this morning so they are thin but note as much as some I've seen. It was a straight pyramid to begin with and the tips were laid out 1/2" but now the nocks are 3/8" right in the middle.

Sidewinder. It's 1.5" at the fades and 3/8" at the nock.
-
I like those dimensions. Glad to hear it did'nt have to be abnormally wide. Looks very good unbraced as well. How did you shoot? Danny
-
Very nice job Jimmy,I got to see it up close and personal. He shot it good Sat. It
is a lot quicker than I thought it would be.Shoots nice. :)

Jimmy, the tips look a lot better with some of the excess wood taken off. I got to see this bow shooting and it is really a snappy shooter, and Jimmy shoots it really well. Very nice job on a wood that isn't the easiest to make a bow from! ;)
The way he shoots it, you can expect to see pic's posted of deer he harvests with it...

Hackberry Hammer proves himself on opening morning. Got this little doe this morning and got a clean pass through.
