This is Island Girl. At last year Classic Josh(GunDoc) gave me this stave. The story goes that he and his daughter found an osage tree on an island near where he lives in Kansas. He cut the tree and split it out into staves. They left the island without the wood and totally forgot about it for 15 years. The river had changed course and made the island inaccessible by land like before. Fifteen years later he was out on he island again and found the staves and recovered them.
The stave Josh gave me was well checked, and good ones at that but he must have been confident I could find a bow in it and here she is. Her name came to me right off the bat, "Island Girl". While reducing the stave I split off a shorter belly split. After reducing it I realized I had enough wood for a shorty sinew backed bow. I tillered this little stave out to 40#@20 and soon I'll be adding 2 or 3 layers of cow sinew. With this short stave having come from "Island Girl" I thought of the shorty as her little sister and the name "Gidget" popped into my head.
Here are some pics...

A while back Pearlie sent me a pair of carp skins. They were relatively short but I knew eventually I'd find the bow for them...and Island Girl was the recipient...

In these pics you will see the checks that remained in the stave. I added super glue to these checks, back and belly(they went through) and every time I reduced the belly a bit I added more super glue where needed. You can see the dark lines on the back(even down under the carp skins) and the belly and at the tip on the other end...

...and I added lemonwood tip overlays. They should show up nicely as the osage darkens with age...

...and now for the money shots. I realize the outer 1/3 of each limb is a bit stiff but with the checks and all the super glue I left them that way. She shoots well with a little thump when released but I'm sure that is the stiff outer limbs.

Island Girl is 66"t/t, 52#@26". This next pic is of Island Girl with her still unfinished little sister Gidget. My plan for Gidget is to be part of a set that will grace the raffle table at the Tenn Classic next spring. Here are the sisters together...

Love the looks of that one, the skins look sweet!!
-
Pat, you turned that cracked stick into a beauty.
those skins sure are pretty, and that'll be a cool little
piggy back bow too I'm sure
-
Nice! Super nice!
-
Wow! Nicely done Pat! I knew you could make that old stick shine. I'm really diggin the names! Very fitting. Josh
-
Outstanding work Pat. I always get stoked when I see that you have posted a bow. I've never won a raffle in my life, but I will be giving this one a try. :D
-
Thanks everyone. Except for the checks this was some fantastic osage with dense, thick growth rings and red streaks through out the stave. It was a pleasure to work. Thanks again Josh. I happy I did the stave proud.
-
Love seeing these kinds of bows Pat. Nicely done Sir.
-
Great googley woogley! I am doubling down on my plans to be in Tennessee for next year's classic just so I can see the set! I did not think it was possible for you to top last year's bow/arrow set, O Bearded Wonder, but you did it!
-
Awesome, Pat! Great bow.
-
JW, the two bows won't be the set. I think my wording was confusing. :-[ Island Girl will be one of my hunting bows this year. I'm planning to make arrows and a quiver for Gidget and offer that as a set. After last year I wanted to try to top the $700 the hickory backed lemonwood ALB brought.
I'd like to challenge everyone that is going to the Tenn. Classic next spring to add something big to the raffle table. Lets show Twin Oaks how much we appreciate them! 8)
-
Pat,
Really nice...Love all the character, excellent work on that one 8)

Pat, That is a beauty of a bow. I love a bow made from wood with a bit of a history. Great job getting a shooter out of that checked stave. I can't wait to meet her little sister next year at the Classic ;)
-
Nice Pat :D
-
Now, that's a "sows ear to silk purse" bow. Nice work Pat. Those carp skins look great. Someone will be proud to have that one.
-
Fabulous work all around. I like the stories to go with both bows too. Makes them even more interesting.
Thanks for sharing.
-
Beautiful work, Pat. Really like that profile and the carp skins look great.
-
Good work Pat, is that a West coast Shirt I see there......?
-
Real nice bow Pat.....the subject title got my attention ;D Really like the story behind the name.
DBar
-
Thanks guys. I appreciate the kind words.
My daughter brought the shirt back to me from a cruse along the Southern Alaskan coast.
-
great story and even better bow...looks awesome!!Those carp skins are a nice touch-Hammertime
-
You have some serious bow making skills Pat
-
Wow Pat!! You never cease to amaze! Love those two bows!
Cipriano
-
You did good, Buddy, I like both of them.
-
Very nice Pat, looks like a serious hunting bow. Also like the profile on the shorty resting there on those blocks, can't wait to see that one done as well.
-
Great job pat, I'd expect nothing less from you sir
-
Thank you, everyone. I knew something good would come from the stave when Josh gave it to me. It's history alone was hard to compete with.
BB, Gidget will be braced backwards to my fistmele at least when I put the sinew down. I've got big expectations for her.
Eddie, I think I'll be at Chris' next weekend(Wade might show up) and will be hunting with this bow some. Last weekend I won a Remington 770 bolt action in .270 cal at a fund raiser. It has been bore sited but I will zero it in at Chris' and try to christen it. ;)
Carp skins have become one of my favorite decorations and these skins that Pearlie gave me really set the bow off.
-
Yup, great bow, I like the idea of the at check going right through. Just goes to show what's possible.

Thanks everyone. Brian, I plan to work on that piece this winter.
-
George, you'll love osage.
-
Impressive work on that sisters, Pat. That glue line looks great, also like the carp. I'm sure the lil sister will come as nice as the elder.
Oh and I like your shirt, the north west coast artwork is one of my favs.
-
Thanks, Simon. It was definitely an interesting stave to work on.
I like that MW Coast art also.
-
Such an interesting story and really fine work, Pat! Way to go, buddy!
-
Thanks Steve
-
WOW!!! that is an insanley awesome looking bow. Pat that is unbelievably cool to see especially after reading the story to go with it.
-
That fish skin looks amazing. Bow looks awesome and the story makes it ten times more impressive. Incredible how well Osage holds up.

I'm gonna try to start adding sinew to Gidget tomorrow. It's gonna be a nasty, rainy day. ;D

-
Looking good there pat :)
-
Great great bow !!
love it. I keep coming back to see the pictures
the wood, the story behind, the carp skins (!)... even the checks !!
Not shure about lemonwood tips but it's a super bow anyway
-
Very nice Pat. Tiller looks spot on
-
Real nice Pat
-
The skins make the bow, Pearle. ;)
-
I forgot all about sending them to you. Its been a while.
-
I really like that bow. Nice Job!
-
Thanks Arrowind.
-
Did you use some filler to make the checks turn black?
I'm working on a a similarly checked stave right now.
-
Those checks were so old they were black to begin with. All I did is add super glue until they filled. I did the filling little at a time so the glue wouldn't run through.
-
Looks great as usual Pat. Cool name too
-
Very nice bow Pat. I've always been a fan of checked wood bows, especially since most of my wood is like that. Good job. God Bless
-
Wow!!! I'm totally stoked. Pat sent me a message informing me that I should expect a package. Sure enough a few days later my wife calls to tell me I received a package. Being her usual ornery self, she would not give me any more details than that. After a week of teasing, she finally sent me a pic. It was island girl! We finally got nice enough weather to try her out and snap a couple pics. She shoots hard, fast and right where I look. Thank you so much Pat! My photographer (middle daughter) wanted to try it out as well. She had a little trouble hitting full draw. Lol! Thanks again Pat! She's a beauty! Josh
-
She makes that bow actually look better! And that's saying something....
Sometimes a bow lands in the right place at the right time. This one sure did.
-
You are very welcome, Josh. I felt it only appropriate to send her back to where she came from. She had too much history there.
The outer portion of the upper limb looks a bit stiff but that is where the check went all the way from back to belly. She probably has a half of bottle of super glue in those checks.
Glad she shoots well for you Josh and thanks again for the opportunity to work with such an interesting piece of wood with such a fabulous story.
-
Pretty bow Pat!
-
Love the look of those bows. And the story is a real plus!
-
Thanks Brian and Mountain Man.
-
You better take good care of that girl Josh. If you don't, I'll give her a good home ;D
-
Sweeeeeet!
-
Good on ya Pat!... She is a sweet bow!... Brian
-
Very cool Pat and congrats Josh . Pappy
-
You lucky dog trucker! A genuine Pat B bow!
-
You lucky dog trucker! A genuine Pat B bow!
Yeah lucky dog is right, congrats josh and great gift pat
-
Looks like i need to give pat a stave and make up some crazy story (a lil white lie) about its history and get a bow back from it so i too can have a genuine patb bow ... >:D
Congrats Josh!!! :)
-
Awesome bow, and a great gift Pat.
