This is a little bow I made back in August. I had this stave standing in the corner of my basement that looked bound for the Wood King but after picking it up and looking at it several times I thought, "What is there to loose?"
So after several rounds with the heat gun I got it straight enough to work with. The stave was only 58" long so I left it deflexed a little at the fades and flipped the tips up a bit. It looks like it has a ton of string follow but it only took around an inch and a half of set during tillering.
It finished out 60# @ 28" of draw and measures 56" NTN. It has some good size knots and one hole almost completely through the lower limb that reminds me of a volcano. I put a couple road killed copperhead skins on the limbs and some beavertail on the grip.
I really like the way this one shoots and as soon as it cools up, I intend to "Thump" a deer or two with it.

Here is a couple shots of the stave before I straightened it. Kinda looked like kindling to me! It was twisted about 45 degrees and had a bad dogleg in it. Just goes to prove, there is no "bad" osage.

Very nice.
Makes me want to take another look at some of my staves that I had put aside for not being "bow worthy"!! ;)

I like how you salvaged a difficult piece of wood. Tiller and skin job are terrific.
-
Wow - that really turned out to be one really beautiful bow! great combination of materials & awesome job taming that stave! Well done my friend!
Now simply mail that bow to: 8220 Dawn Hill.......

She's a beauty Shannon. No such thing as throw-away osage. There is a bow in every piece...you just have to find it!...and you did. ;) Pat
-
Wow, good-looking bow. With that knot on it, shoulda named it "snake eye"...lol. I'll bet that's a sweet shooting bow. Jim
-
I almost forgot. The limbs are 1-5/8" wide tapering down to 3/8"

Great looking bow, I need to try a shorty like that some day.
-
Yessir sawfiler - I believe you just increased my stave count by about a third ;D. That did make one handsome bow.
-
Nice job on a challenging piece of wood. I like the copperhead skins.
-
Excellent job...now thats what I'm talking about. you resurected that knarly ole piece of osage and look at it now. I love the copperheads too it really fits the bow. Yeah I like the ealier suggestion that one should be named "snake eye".
-
Looks like you used every ounce of bow that was in that stave. Great job, should be a deer slayer.
-
That snake is honored to be on such a well made bow. Be a good riparian whitetail hunter. Looking forward to seeing your bow during Oct Self Bow of the Month consideration.
-
Very impressive to get a recurved bow out of that stave! You've definitely got talent! ;)
-
Great looking bow. What is the brace height? Justin

You did a great job on that one . It turned out to be a beautiful bow.
-
Thanks for the compliments fellas. I wasn't gonna post it but now i'm glad I did. I really like making short bows and for some crazy reason, most of the worst stave's I work on make some of my best shooting bows.
It seems like the knottiest most crooked ones in the pile always seem to have the best looking rings and color ???
-
Awsome
-
Those knotty crooked staves will teach you more about building bows than a straight clean stave. Apparently you learned very well. ;) Pat
-
Shannon, I'm going to start asking you how to questions! :o Another nice one, your a machine! ;D
-
Sweet bow this just inspired me to work a short twisty stave that I've been questioning. Awesome work.
-
That is one beautiful bow. One question though.Does'nt all your boisD'arc look like that?Mine does.I have to untwist, and unbend every stave. But I like it,Ha. I've heard tale of it growing straight, but to us in east Texas,it's a mythical beast. Great job on that snakeskin too. God Bless, Pete C

That copperhead is beautiful on the bow...wow

Stunning, man. What did you put over top the skins to seal them?
