Greetings folks, I cut a nice ERC tree down in Nov. 2016 and got 4 really nice staves that I was going to make selfbows with,. well when I started reducing the sapwood I found more knots than I wanted so I decided to back this stave with maple. Its a 65" long and is pulling 58# @ 27". Its 1 and 5/16 wide at the handle and gradually tapers to less than 3/8 at the tips. The tip overlay is purpleheart and the handle is elk with kangaroo lace. Thickness is 3/4 at the handle and tapers to 1/2 tips. String is D-97. This is one of the faster bows I've built and is a joy to shoot with no handshock. I don't post many but seeing Boweds Maple R/D got me pumped. Thanks for looking!(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4795/39915181554_64e61a6895_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/23PaJRq)20180304_180714 (https://flic.kr/p/23PaJRq) by Robert Whitley (https://www.flickr.com/photos/152274917@N03/), on Flickr

Looks pretty darn good to me Bob.Good amount of poundage from it too.Good showing a flat stiff handle and a bendy handle bow from the same wood in succession lately.Congratulations!!
-
Thank you BJ and Ed, It means a lot coming from you guys. I tried to get as much weight as I could Ed, I don't know how long it'll last with the knots and all. I'll let you all know if it blows😉!
-
Wow that's a beauty.....
-
That's a looker, and I bet it is a real joy to shoot.
-
Awesome work my friend! I always look forward to seeing your bows. :OK

Very nice bow Bob. I love the color and smell of ERC.
-
Wow, that's a nice one! The handle looks great too. I am going to try those dimensions on the ERC stave that has been living in my garage rafters.
-
Nice... I'll pretend I can't see the shelf ;)

Thanks Dbar, Rps4, Jeff, Pat and Paul and Timbo. Yes Pat the smell is almost intoxicating, love it. The shelf is removable Del and it shoots well without one😉.

She should hold together for ya if you've given her enough of a workout to full draw tillering.Nice overlay touch using the purple heart too.

That is one pretty longbow! Love it!
-
That's a nice looking bow, Ed. Good to see one made from wood that gets bad mouthed all of the time.
-
Beautiful bow, very nice work. :)
Pappy

Thank you Kyle Parnell , Simson and Redhand.
Parnell, i enjoyed shooting with you at the classic last year.
-
Nice Bend, looks like nice shooter. The color of that cedar really stands out. Great bow!

Judging by that group in the target not only did you build a beautiful bow, but a great shooter as well! Did you make your Maple backing strip?
Where can one find Red Cedar - it has to be some of the prettiest core wood I've seen, and seems like it would be light in physical weight also? Would Hickory be a suitable backing?
-
Wow that's a beautiful bow

Thank you Mike and Joe. Barebo that was a 3/16 backing that i took down to 1/8 and left parallel. Also it is glued up with titebond 3. I cut that Juniper ERC about a mile from my house in southeast Tx. Here are a couple more pics I meant to put up.(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4786/40583675072_596b04f83e_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/24QeWFJ)20180304_180500 (https://flic.kr/p/24QeWFJ) by Robert Whitley (https://www.flickr.com/photos/152274917@N03/), on Flickr(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4673/38815788150_76da61da5c_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22924uJ)20180304_180524 (https://flic.kr/p/22924uJ) by Robert Whitley (https://www.flickr.com/photos/152274917@N03/), on Flickr

yes, that`s a nice bow, well done

Beautiful bow. I’ve had no luck with ERC even sinewed. Nice work.
-
That is indeed a beauty of a bow. I need to cut Some cedar. I don’t have any on my land that has a usable trunk section, but there are a few that have branches large enough I think. People always talk of how good the stuff smells, but I don’t care for it. I think it smells quite a bit like Tom cat urine.

Thank you Hans, Hosierf and Morgan.
Hosierf I have a sister stave to this one that I am hopefully going to turn into a selfbow now that I know this particular ERC tree will hold together under stress.
Morgan I can see how the smell might not be for everyone!
Oh and the finish is Danish oil and beeswax.
