I started this vine maple up at my good friend martys shop at this past years martyjam...I got the stave from steveb(thanks again Steve), and he got the stave from Carson I believe he said... its 64" ntn,56@27",20.4 ounces mass weight, with a hemp wrapped handle with a red string accent wrapped around the hemp...I heat shaped it over pearlys form and didn't really temper it at all...it lost very little of what I heated in(I love tension wood)...it is resting almost at 2 1/2" of reflex...what wood a vine maple be without some character as well...its got a series of reflex and deflex kinks in the upper limb...the bottom has a subtle one as well, and it is also a lil snakey...and both limbs have some prop twist as well....this bow is a sweet bow to shoot...can't feel or hear a thing, and is a hit where you look bow with authority...this ones staying in my collection...might even see me carrying it around at a shoot on a course its so good...I also gave it a nice red n dark two tone dye job....vine maple really pops beautifully with a dye on it...my pics don't do it justice...anyways...here she is n thanks for looking

Fine bow you've got there! Great work!
-
Wow!what a beauty!you sure build some killer cool stick 8)s!
-
Eeeyeww... ick!... it's all lumpy and bumpy and croaked! Yuck. ;D
-
Great work on that piece of wood. Very nice. It looks like it stores a lot of energy.
-
Sometimes I see a bow and just want it, this is one of them >:D. Awesome job on that one.
-
Very beautiful... I Love it... ;)
And the colors at the fades and the tips... that's great
-
Looks good man. Nice color and finish looks like glass.
-
Now she is pretty and got the stats to back it up too.
-
Cool bow HawkMan..I just happened to get some Vine Maple in the mail today!
-
Very nice, tiller is spot on. :)
-
Plenty of character to distract the bowyer from watching the tiller process...but you obviously were too dogged in determination to fall for that ruse. Plus your finish enhances the wood without hiding the grain or character, that's a real bonus in my opinion. Looks like a shooter to be proud of, sir!
-
I like everything about that bow. One of the nicest looking bows I've seen here or anywhere else. Excellent!!!
-
Sweet bow. I swear, every VM bow i see has a sick dye job on it!
-
She's a real beauty, Chris. 8)
-
There is something extra special about the finish on this one.
-
very very cool, nicely done
chuck
-
Now you see what us westies are talking about!
Well done! I like it a lot!
There's a 99% chance I cut that stave, either way, your welcome ;)
-
That finish is amazing.
-
Sweet. Tiller looks spot on and that's an achievement in and of itself on such a squirrely stick. Blackhawk tips and a cool finish make it a keeper. Like it a bunch.
-
Love the colors, character, bend and everything... 8)
Don
-
That's a super looking bow! Your dye job came out great. Nice grip too.

I thought you were done with short bows.
-
She dressed up nice
the lipstck really did the trick !
and that grip wrap is way over the top!
Hope to see you real soon !!
-
Wickedly sharp bow Chris. Back profile with the wide inner limbs and skinny outters, side profile with the kinks and reflex, handle, finish and tiller, all excellent. Love it man.
-
I cant say enough thanks to all who commented....thanks guys...mucho appreciated.... even if someone(ehemm..adb)thinks its yucky.... ;D
Thanks Bryce.... ya cut a good one if ya did ;) ...not sure if I'm ready to crown it king of white woods yet(need to make more to come to that conclusion),but it sure is some damn fine wood that's for sure... ;)

Sorry Pinecone, that is one I cut. When Steve came shopping for a stave to send to blackhawk, I went to my private reserve. I remember cutting it: Spring bear hunt 2012 Tillamook State Forest near Salmonberry River. It was cut near the edge of a clearcut and had some of that yellow orange bark that happens when vine maple grows up in the sun. There was some question as to whether this sunny vine maple was as good as the green stuff. Well, I guess it is good enough for Chris. ;)
Nice work on that thing Chris. I eyeballed that stave for quite sometime, glad it became a bow by your hands. Nicely done 8)
-
oh man that looks like a blood stained version of "Twister" my fave' bow.
Just gotta love it.... oooh she looks creamin' fast and smooth as silk.... (drool)

Can you explain a little how you applied the two tone stain?
Thanks in advance.

Can you explain a little how you applied the two tone stain?
Thanks in advance.
I First dyed the whole bow the red base color...then let that dry(don't take long)...then apply the darker dye over the top of the red at the tips and handle...this helps create a nice transition effect as you can still see a subtle underlying undertone of the red underneath the darker color...I then drag and wipe some of the dark color out into the red...I apply it with paper towels and sometimes that's enough to get the transition if there isn't much dye left coming off the paper towel...sometimes you might have to use some steel wool very lightly to help create a nice transition from the darker to lighter color...get a scrap piece first and do some tests and trials to see what works best for you,and not potentially making a bow look like a two colored turd...lol. its pretty simple really, especially if you've already worked with dyes previously(which I know you have) ....hope that makes sense...if not don't be afraid to ask for more clarification on anything I said ;)
-
Did you use leather dye or rit dye?

Big help mate thanks. I have tried the transition gig once and it failed miserably. Had to dye the bow one colour again. didnt think about the full coat of base colour first mind. Defo going to practice on some scrap.
-
Did you use leather dye or rit dye?
Neither....I use some stuff called transtint ...I got it at a local woodworkers supply store a few years ago...
-
Congrats on the win brother! That is one beautiful bow! I got to see that on in person sometime.
-
What's the width of this baby?
-
Yes Sir,
She's a Beauty for Sure...
Thank You for sharing your Dying Process.
I've just started tinkering with Leather Dyes and wood.
I'll have to look into Transtint...
