Pappy, to my house is is more like 6. Five hours to Asheville and another hour to my house.  I'd love it if you could make it but I totally understand if you can't.

Pat, is the camp-o-rama gonna be at your house?  It just says dates and nothing else!
Title: Re: Patty's Camp-O-Rama #4
Post by: Pat B on June 06, 2010, 02:13:34 pm
Billy, it is on the lower portion of my 25ac. in a open area of about 2 ac.  We have an open barn (with electricity) for cover, a fire pit, an outhouse but will have a porta-potty, primitive camping and usually lots of food and beverages(adult and otherwise). Usually we have 15 to 20 folks with most camping but some just for the day.
A creek runs through the property and a small(about 3') waterfall if you need a shower!  ;D

Well, I don't know if I will be able to make it then....the following weekend I am going to the Poarch Creek indian reservation in Alabama with my friend Thad Beckum.  We'll be doing a primitive skills class and we'll be teaching the native kids the skills their ancestors used to survive, so I'll probably be collecting all the materials we'll need to make bowdrill kits, etc on the weekend of your event.  BUT...don't count me out.  If I can get away I just might come up there and show you bows how to knap!!

Hi Pat,

Unless the creek rises and such I sure do plan to be there and hope to bring a bowmaking friend along.  Think anyone will be there to talk about arrow making? Hope you don't mind some flute music in the evenings...and if anyone wants to hear the basics of flute building I will drag my stuff along.

That bow you are building sure in awesome! Still pulling on my new one.:)

Rand,  Have you recouped from the wedding yet? ;)
You better come. I don't want to have to ship those staves!  ;D   Flute music will be perfect for the evenings. Maybe I can learn something. Your friend is welcomed and we will make a point to work on arrows.
This TradGang trade bow I'm building is coming along nicely. Plan on getting the floppy rest and handle wrap on in the next few days and more coats of Tru-Oil. Has to be out by July 4th so I'll be mailing it off pretty soon.

Pat,

Yep...wedding over with and house mostly rebuilt in getting ready for it...shop a total mess and will tackle it (first real attempt) a bit in the morning.  I talked to another friend about your camp-o-rama who has a yew stave he wants to turn into a bow...he is a dulcimer, flute, guitar and about any instrument maker and a quite a singer of old mountain ballads...hope he take a jump into bow making as I am sure he would like it.  Glad to hear my staves are still doing fine.  Make sure you post a pic or two of your finished bow before you mail it!!

Pat, was just commenting on your "back in the saddle" bow.  Then checked out several more posts, all of which had helpful comments from you on them.  And, you've always been one of the first to comment and give advice when I've needed it.  So, I was just now thinking, I'd like to meet Pat in person,  hmm wonder if I've missed his gathering?"  And, low and behold I see this post.  I'm going to all I can to attend.  I might even through gmc in the back of the truck.

Mike, the camp-o-rama is a week before my birthday. There is a local shoot on my B-day weekend so I opted to have it the weekend before. Also Mike, my house is 6 hours from Pappy's. That would be a LONG haul for you. :o
Charlie, I wish you could make it again but I understand!

I don't think I'll be able to make it this time Pat.  I'm always out of town the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday before your camp-o-rama, but this year they happen to be on the same weekend.  I'll make sure to inform the Liberty gang though.

Between getting married after the last gathering and working every day I don't have too awful much to show---unless you count much too awful to show :)

Hey Pat,

I finished my osage bow I was working on...gonna bring it up to the Camp-o-Rama with me and get you to give me some advice.  When strung it tilts so that the bottom limb is not in line with the top...has a little twist in it...so the handle is cantering leftish and...shoot I will just bring it along and see if you can give me some advice...it is a sweet shooting bow (shoots off the hand) and I would love to see it turn into my deer bow this fall.  See you soon.

BTW sure did like your recurve!

Rand

John, sorry you won't make it. I was concerned when you missed last year because you got married. Not concerned about you getting married but your timing.  ;)  Tell the liberty gang to come on up.
Rand, like any parent, you are worrying about the small stuff. If it shoots good, shoot it. If you get good at shooting it, it will make a good hunting bow!  ;)  Bring it along. I'll bet you(and I'm not a betting man) I can teach you to make a good bow quicker than you can teach me to be a mediocre flutist!  ;D
Two weeks from tomorrow is the grand opening!!!  We are ordering the Porta-Potty tomorrow!!! ;D

Hedge, sorry you won't be able to make it. Maybe next year.

Rand, It's been hot here lately too. Over 90 and for us, that's hot. At least the evenings and nights are cooler so be prepared with a light jacket or sweat shirt. Might have rain. I'll keep checking the weather and post updates.
What way will you be coming? Are you near I-26?

Come up I-26 and exit at the Asheville Regional Airport exit( exit 40) towards Brevard. You will exit and turn left across the I-26 and you are on Hwy 280. The airport will be on your right. Follow 280 (4 lane) into Brevard. As you near Brevard 280 ends and becomes 64/276. Continue straight on into the center of Brevard, up Courthouse Hill and  left on Hwy 276(Main St) south towards Greenville, SC. From this point go 4.1 miles out 276 to a right onto Island Ford Rd. Turn right on to Island Ford Rd across from Mud Dabbers Pottery Shop. Go 2 miles to a left of Walnut Hollow Rd(just past Island Ford Body Shop on rt). Now go 3.2 miles out Walnut Hollow to a left on Carson Creek Rd. (look for a sign) Follow Carson Creek 1.3 miles to a right on Calico Lake Dr. You will come under an overpass on Carson Creek Rd and the road goes down hill and into an "S" curve. At the bottom of the hill is Calico Lake Dr on RT. Turn in Calico Lake and we are the 2 drive on the left(gravel). Look for signs!
When do y'all plan to arrive, Rand?

Hi Pat,

Depends on if my buddy comes along...he has been building bows a long time but developed his own style and I think he would find it interesting to see how you guys build them.  Does the Camp-o-rama have a schedule for each day?  What have y'all done in the past?

Rand

Post by: Pat B on July 16, 2010, 12:21:08 am
Rand, this is a very casual gathering with no schedule(except Fri to Sun  ;D ). Whatever happens, happens!  ;) If you have something special you want to do feel free to do it. I have some tools here, a bench vise and bowyers horse, tiller tree and scales. Folks will be knapping and hafting, arrow making from cane and hardwood shoots, cordage, pitch glue, etc.
From Columbia to my house is about 3 hour drive.

Hey Pat,

I will get up with my friend and see what's what...if he isn't coming I will plan to come on Friday afternoon and stay til Sunday (that being said my truck is in the shop getting a heart transplant (a new used motor) but it should be done and have me back on the road before the weekend.  SO...you got one coming for the head count anyway.

Besides you need a lesson on that drone you got:),

I killed a yella jacket nest in one of the florescent light fixtures but haven't seen the first copperhead. I did have to stop and let a 6' black snake cross the driveway this morning. He sure wasn't in a rush and when I got out to speed him up, he put me back in my truck fast!  :o

Jonathan, Do you need directions?  Just come up 276, past Caesar's Head. After a few miles you will pass the main gate to Connestee Falls, a gated community. A mile or so past the main gate, possibly the next left turn(on a sharp curve) is Connestee Rd. Turn left. It snakes down and dead ends on Island Ford Rd and the other directions will get you here.
If you miss the Connestee Rd  go down the hill and you will see Island Ford Rd on your left. Turn there and follow the other directions.

Just think Charlie if this were last year you would already be here.  I real sorry you won't be making it this year. Take care of yourself so you can come next year. We will get pics for you.

The countdown is on!  ;D   I put in two long days at work yesterday and today so I haven't been to the store. I'm going early tomorrow and should be back before noon. If anyone shows up before I get home just hang out at the barn and I'll be back soon. If you want to pic a spot for your tent go ahead and set it up. The carb in my lawnmower went out last week so I didn't get to mow but for you tent campers it will make for a more comfortable bed!  ::)

Pat thanks again for a great time.  :) Nice to have a great group of people that gets along and have the same instest. I do have some good pics, like Steve said we were beat last night. If you thing about it, you pack and unpack 4 times. Your water fall was a life saver from the heat, I forgot to get a pic of it. The food was amazing and a lot of it, Dave and Cora had their pig cooker and it was always full.  :) Hey Pat thanks for the chiggers!!!!  ;D

Hi Pat,

Just wanted to thank you for putting on such an awesome event.  I had no idea that when I showed up that Chef's David and Cora and Bryon would be cooking up a feast for each and every meal...deer burgers to die for, BBq chicken and beans galore and then BBQ pork in David's secret sauce that would make Piggy Park try to make him deals for the recipe, then the homemade sausage (Bryon's I think) the next morning and Patty's coffee to come alive with and then there was Steve's GAR fillets...dudes and dudetes if you missing Patty's Camp-o-rama this year you sure missed THE EVENT of the season...then there was bow making 101 and Eric getting his Black Locust bow done in two days!!!! (and watching his proud daddy Randy watching his son work on the bow was neat too!)  And Alan's awesome points he made as he went through about 16 tons of rock and Steve's guitar playing and then there is Bryon...boy he sure can fool ya...he wacks rocks and does awesome points, makes and cooks awesome sausage and then the rascal pretends he can't play a guitar and then next thing you know he is playing like Johnny Cash and singing like him too!!!!!!  During a slack in it all the other Steve pulls out his bows and arrows and says "Let's start slinging em!" and we do!!  When I first drove up the first thing I did was to jump out of my truck and yell at Pat..."Hey, come here Pat and let me show you my new osage bow I just finished!!  I strung her up and asked Pat "what do you think?" and he said..."well"...(I knew I was in trouble already)..."who has been teaching you to follow a ring?" (worse news)..."you just might just want to back this thing backed ASAP before you shoot her again" (!!!!)...  So then he shows me the staves he got for me out at the classic...one straight and one so snakey I thought it might rear up and bite me!!!  Course...which one do you think I wanted Pat to help me find the ring with???  Ha!  Anyway I sure did have a great time...y'all come next year and you might even see dancing girls!!

Rhyolite still cuts flesh as good now as it did a few thousand years ago:

I think I'm going to quit asking my wife for a meatloaf and mashed potato birthday cake, and get her to make me one of those instead.  Dang that thing was good.

It was great meeting everyone.  I had a blast, and came home with A LOT of things I need to work on.  The talent you all have absolutely blew me away.

I talked to Eric last night and he has stained it and is shooting. He got his neighbor over to shoot too. Might have another one hooked!  ;D
Eric is going to sign up to PA in the next few days and wants to thank everyone for all the help. I hope he posts pics too.
