It's been a long time... but I finally finished a new bow. I've been so busy knapping I just haven't taken the time. :o
This one's osage, 64" ntn 52# at 27" It's slender...barely 1-1/8" wide and tapers down to around 3/8" just in front of the string grooves. The handle area was too thin for the kind of grip I like, so I built it up with several layers of super glue soaked leather.
The handle is wrapped with goat skin lacing and the tips are Bacote topped off with elk skull.
The stave was a little split I bought from Yazoo at last years classic for $10. For a $10 piece of wood, I'm very happy with the way it turned out. It's one of the sweetest shooting bows I've made and is pretty darn quick too.
It's been shot several times by several different people but most importantly, it passed the "GregB test" :o If he shoots it and it don't break...it's a good 'un ;D

-
Man that's so smooth... Can hardly believe it's made of wood, it's that perfect :o
-
Dang Shannon, that is sweet! Those skins look great with the black 'sage. You may not make quantity, but you sure make quality!
-
Did you use leather dye to get it black?
-
That is some kind of slick Shannon! Bring it to TN in a month - I wanna hold it ;D.
-
Stunning! Greg
-
She's a BEAUTY!
-
Wow that looks great Shannon. I like the color also. Not over built either ;) I didn't know Greg was known for breaking bows ??? I'll remember that ;D
-
Super looking bow Shannon, that black finish is really nice, I may have to try that sometime. Poor Greg, I was standing there drooling over those bows too when Greg pulled that bow. I felt bad for him, for James, for the bow, it was just one of those moments.
Anyway, great bow.

Bring it to Tenn. this weekend. That bow SCREAMS, PERFECT.
-
Great bow, love that color.
-
I'm flattered that ya'll like it so well :o
Yea Jesse, 'ol Greg's been known to blow up a few ::) Wasn't his fault though, just bad timing.
I'd love to Eddie, but Momma won't let me out of this neighborhood this weekend. Gotta look for eggs with the youngin'.
-
No, sir... I don't think you've forgotten how! ;D That's a beauty.
-
Wow!. That's one beautiful bow. What kind of stain do you use to get that deep black? Great job man. Keep it up.
-
Well I know a good bit about this bow from many phone conversations, and this is the first time I have seen it. It looks better than you described it Slickfoot!
the handle wrap turned out real nice! I will be using that in the future.
Two thumbs!
-
She's a real beauty, Shannon. I generally don't like to stain osage bows but this bow is striking and I may have to give it a try. 8)
-
whoa.. just, whoa. Start tallying the votes now, I'd say!
-
Winner * 2 :)
-
Beautiful bow!! I've found that my fastest Osage bows are the narrow ones I make from what is essentially salvaged scraps from other bows. With Osage, I believe narrow is essential for speed. The wider thinner ones are not as fast. I'll bet this one screams.
-
Better make room on your hat rack eh, looks like a winner :)
-
absolutely awesome. beautiful tiller and exceptional detail and finish on the tips.
love it!
-
Beautiful bow, very well done.I got the chance to shoot this one and it shoots every bit as good as it looks, Ha I think I recognize the shed the full draw was taken at. :) :)

Spectacular looking bow, that you made there.
-
super bow,,,I would like to be the first to offer your money back ;D I have got a big pile of those narrow osage staves I am bringing to classic,
-
Wow!! The whole package is sleek and curvy and... And, I like them limb tips; the way the string wraps around the knocks.
Thanks for Sharing,
Canoe

Excellent in every way. The profile, tiller, character, tip accents and dye job are all fantastic. Congratulations on a very fine bow.
-
Very well done! Like every bit about it: Tiller, unbraced, braced and fulldraw shape, all the details...
-
Yeah, I have been unlucky a couple of times drawing other folks bows...and I only draw 27", so I guess I'm a Jonah huh?
Although the pictures are great on this bow, they still don't do it justice. The coloring of the skins and the finish work is just outstanding. It isn't just a looker either, it sends an arrow down range with authority and is a joy to shoot. Shannon's attention to detail scream out his perfectionist personality in everything he does...be it bowyering, flintknapping, or knife making...etc., etc., etc. ;)
-
Gee Shannon that is a beautiful bow and a keeper. Should be BOM. Joe

-
Nice bow ! Beautiful work. I'll bet its a sweet shooter.
-
Really nice Shannon.
-
My first thought was: A black Mama rebirth as a bow - great stuff.
-
Very nice bow. I like the whole shootin' match. ;) God Bless
-
Crazy good, as usual, but i think you outdone yourself this time!
-
Thank you all :)
For those that asked...Making that yellow wood black was not easy. I first tried black leather dye but that didn't work. I then went over it with a huge black marker and that left it streaked. So I went back over it with the leather dye again and that made it as black as I wanted. But............the finish wouldn't dry. I waited a week for one coat of poly to dry, and it never did. I rubbed/wiped/scraped/sanded most of the old poly off and re-applied it. Then a week in the hot box later it was dry. It took me over three weeks to get a decent finish on this bow. If I had it to do again I'd have just painted the dang thing black and been done with it!
-
...and then ya dropped it in the creek and chipped it eh ;) :o
-
Thanks for letting us know how you did it. It sure turned out nice but I can imagine it was discouraging to get done.
-
I'm in awe of that bow. Gorgeous! Looks like bow of the year material to me.
