Title: Anyone have any idea on the type of tree this is????
Post by: smokeu on May 10, 2009, 09:14:03 pm
I believe it is some kind of hickory just not sure what kind, my guess is pignut. I have crawled all over tree books and the internet but cant find anything that looks like an exact match. I have some good logs of this about 5in diameter really heavy stuff.  It was cut near Natchidoches LA. Hope someone can help.  Thanks a lot for all the help.

l'm not sure about that tree in the center of your photo but that tree to the left of it looks like a Mockernut Hickory.

Well im glad to here that. That is the same type tree as the one in the center. The center tree is about a 5inch sapling.  I think you may be right.

It has a compound leaf like a hickory or ash.

I think that it is a mocker nut. I searched the web and found some similar photos. Also has a specific gravity of .72 may be a good bow.

Definately a smooth bark hickory, either pignut or mockernut.  Can't remember but I think both have either 7 or 9 leaves per stem.  Those appear to have 5 to 7.  Can't remember if that's a marker or not.  Google is your friend, and will frequently have pictures.  I don't think you can id mockernut from pignut without the actual nuts, but it's honestly not by best subject.  Hillbilly etal. may be along directly to clarify.  Don't matter much, makes bow wood either way and each specimen seems to cross species to some degree.

Looks like mockernut to me, too. From what I can see in the pic of the leaves and petioles, they're fuzzy-mockernut (Carya tomentosa or C. alba) has tomentose (fuzzy) petioles and twig tips, pignut (Carya glabra) has glabrous (smooth) twigs and petioles. Mockernut is good wood, I've made a couple good bows from it.

I can say with a fair amount of certainty it aint pig nut, so I'm goin with mockernut.

Thanks for the help guys I have researched thouroghly and I am positive that it is a mockernut. I have seen some more of these near Center Tx and its funny but the look slightly different but it is obvious they are the same tree. I guess some look a little different depending on the region and average climate. Also found out i can make some black dye. Pretty stoked. I appreciate all the help.
