That s right NTN.. Those are rather difficult to skin. Two rattlers, lots of bull, two rat snakes, two water snakes and 1 I don't have a clue about...

Yea Cowboy. Most are road kill.  Here in Texas as you know, right before or right after a good rain, the roads are littered with those long pretty bull snakes.  I think I have about 30 more to skin. Will have to wait till Saturday.  What's the best way to flesh a snake skin?

No fleshing needed. Well I don't know about them boa's and python's but the regualar snakes around here I just split em down the belly, peel the hide off and tack it to a board flesh side out for about a day and voila!

Post by: Josh on February 28, 2011, 02:21:36 pm
^^^ I do it the same way and have never had a problem with them. They will keep forever dried out that way too as long as you keep the mice off em.   :)

If you skin the boas and pythons correctly you won't have to flesh them.  The bigger ones can be tough, just make sure you get behind that membrane and you'll be fine.  Once the boas get over 7ft it will take some yanking though.  Once I get about foot started I will step on the carcass with one foot and pull.  Make sure you pull close to the carcass though, even though they are thick skins if your hands get too far from the carcass you can tear the hide.  Also be careful around the cloaca (turd cutter) it can take a little bit of work there if you want to get the tail in one piece.

Good woman their Nate, you should keep her. ;D

I've always tacked the skins flesh side up and salted them.  Once dry any flesh comes off real easy.  Then I rehydrate them to wash the salt off and get them ready for a bow.  Is the salt an issue (since it isn't mentioned by folks)?  I gave the pastors of the church some venison the other day and included in one of their packages a bull snake that had been in the freezer for a couple years.  Funny, he never said anything about it... ???  I have my own refrigerator in the shop and try to keep snakes in that freezer.  Seems to help in the marital harmony department.  The only time my wife ever got real mad was when I put a container of maggots in the refrigerator to keep in between ice fishing trips.  Seems like I got the spare fridge right about then now that I think about it. ;)

Nature that's cool... I agree with George!!! My wife dislikes all the "Grizzly Man" stuff I do.. She's calm about it, but when we were first married it was like watching an episode of, "I love Lucy." except it wasn't Ricky yelling and the yelling wasn't Espanol.. Nope. It was very proper English..

Thanks for the info George.. The big snakes didn't skin out as easily. Well a couple of summers back on my way to summer school I spied a nice "fresh" kill bull snake.. I triple wraped it in Wmart bags and totally forgot about it until one day horrible screams flooded down the halls.. The school secretary was cleaning the freezer, ripped the bags open and out fell Mr. Frozen snakey.. She was not happy. I have my own small freezer... Funny about the pastor George...  :D

Thanks Cipriano, I was worried, I might have accidently said something like..." Bread.....Eight    ;) ::) >:D  Wouldn't want the kids to ask their dad what that meant......  Well it's a hairy.... :o  Who told you that ?!!!  I don't think the kids speak Spanish, but my Neice speaks a little, and her Husband does.  I have a Freind who came over when Castro was letting them go, and he gew up in Belle Glade.  Farming community, and pretty much redneck central.  His dad of course worked at the Sugar mill.  Well he didn't speak any english at all when he came here, and then he learned redneck english.  So when he spoke it was Walll, .......I .......reckon.......we ......kin.....go........down........the........road..........and .....get.....sumptin....ta......eat.  But he spoke Spanish fluently.......but not with a good Cuban accent, so he would go spend a few weeks, at his relatives homes, and get his accent down.  But he still speaks redneck english. ;D

Wayne that is just too funny!!! Most folks I meet say I speak with a Midwest accent.. Don't know how that happened, but sometimes the espanol accent comes out..

I took 20 snake skins to school today. Kindergarten was learning about animal coverings. I also took a vintage kangaroo fur coat and vintage Australian oppossum fur coat. The kids just loved seeing these things.. It was so kool..

I've lived in much of the midwest, and there's quite a bit of difference between the  Minnesota (or Minnesnowta as they say) and Iowa or Nebraska.  Illinois is a little different as well.  I've lived in Texas for almost 4 years now and don't feel like I've picked up the local accent at all yet.  Maybe I never will.  Interestingly, there's a pretty wide difference between east and west Texas accents, though I think they're both cool.  Of course, Texas is large enough to be a couple three normal sized states, so it makes sense.

Good idea Wayne, you guys should start a animal skin fashions thread.  My daughter studied a semester in Russia and brought me back one of their coonskin hats.  It's waaaaay too warm to wear in Texas.  Only thing like that I own.

Noooooo.. Really???   8)  Great idea.. I posted them on here under new thread... Too funny George... Welcome buddy!!  I just posted the coats on here unders a new thread.. That would be really fun to have studied in Russia.  I really enjoy Russiaon literature.. It is dark and the mood is opressive, but I still enjoy the lit.  Folks from El Paso have a very distinct sounding accent..

Great minds work alike??  I'll go look for the other thread.  Laura loved her time abroad.  She also did a few months after she graduated teaching English in Turkey.  She had to bail from that as it got too dangerous.   Didn't surprise me when she married a man from Africa.

Life is good.  Texas is sure a great place to live.

George that sounds very interesting and fun.  I have always loved leaning about other cultures and customes.  What part of Africa?  Hope you got a hunting contact out of that as a dowry ;D

Life is good!!  Amen!!!  Texas is a great place to live and raise a family...  It is sad that it is too dangerous to return to the old country for a few days (Mexico).  Read that short story.. and pass it onto your daughter.  What degree did she get?  I have a degree in English with minors in History, biology and Spanish.

I like those coats.  The possom coat looks much nicer than I thought it would.  They are disgusting looking creatures and were forever getting in my chicken coop to steal eggs when I was in Nebraska.

My SIL is from Ghana, but grew up in France.  His mother's still in Africa and I do want to get over there sometime and do a safari, but we haven't talked about it a lot.  He's working on his citizenship and working in politics in Denver.  He thinks he has a place for me to go elk hunting there, but it may not work out yet for this coming season.  Laura's degree is in "global studies", hence the overseas study.  Interestingly she speaks some Russian, Turkish, Spanish, French and of course English.  Our granddaughter will be bilingual in English and French, our SIL's primary language.  He's also fluent in English and Spanish, though the locals here chuckle at him since he learned to speak the Spanish spoken in Spain.

It is a shame that Mexico has become such a dangerous place.

Texas is large enough to be a couple three normal sized states

Got a friend in Alaska that would tell you to pipe down or they will split their state in HALF and make Texas the third largest.

Or else claim that Texas is too small to be a state and too big to be an insane asylum.

On the other hand I always remind him Alaska don't know barbecue.

The possum coat is really neat!! Yes they are muy feos…
Your SIL must be an interesting chap.. I took a year of French in college.. don’t use it much here in Texas.  Elk hunting would be superb.. It is really neat that your daughter had those experiences..  That is too funny about his Spanish, but when I would go to Mexico the “natives” would treat me like a total foreigner.. must have been the accent..

You crack me up John.  Are you coming down to hog hunt?  Got another group coming down this weekend from Nebraska this weekend.  They're gonna have the hogs all turned into sausage before you get down here?

criveraville, I took 2 years of Spanish in HS, sure wish I'd studied harder, would be real helpful here.  If you ever get up towards Abilene, let me know, would love to meet you at the lease, chase some pigs and swap stories.  Do you hog hunt where you live?

Stickbender,  haaaa haaaa no they don’t.. Thank you!!  He is a handsome little man…  He really wants a six shooter. Trust me, but I told him he will have to wait until he gets older..  Oh he is a Texican all right and he has a funny Texican accent too.  He has a rope, no sombrero, but a hat, George Straight hat he calls it, and he is the first one out of the car when we stop to pick up a snake.. yes, but not made a workable bow yet…
Here is a pick of him on a caballo, with his first deer every ever this last January.  Took it with a .223, and at his little buddies birthday party shooting a German WWI 8mm water cooled machine gun!!!!!  Down here in Texas we roll our own way… :o ::) Even teachers kids..  ;D

Good for him getting a Deer ! 8)  As for scraping, tell him it is all part of the Apprenticeship. ;) Sounds like you have a partner to pick up snakes, and hunt and fish with.  Good for you !  You need to put a brim on that helmet, so when he rides his Cayuse, or Caballo, he will still be safe, but look more like a Texican! ;)  Whoo hoo, I would dearly love to have that Machine gun!  It looks like a Maxim.  If so it was invented by Hiram Maxim, an American, who sold it to all sides before WWI broke out.  The U.S. bought some, but not enough, and when the War broke out, they were scrambling to acquire more.  Just like in WWII, there was a woeful lack of Machine guns.  So much so, that during training, the soldiers used wooden ones like toys!  Hiram Maxim was also the inventor of the "Silencer"  Or more properly known as a Suppressor.  He invented it, so he could target practice in his back yard without his neighbors complaining about the noise.  He advertised it with his picture, and called himself "Doctor Shush".   He tried to sell it to the U.S. Military.  They were not interested.  Some South American countries, and Germany were though.  That and Machine guns were purchasable by anyone with the money, up till 1935, and since then you have to buy a stamp from the Government to possess one of either.  The US Military big wigs, were always a day late in purchasing better equipment, and implementing better ideas.  There was a man, by the name of Christensen, who was a machinist, and as a hobby, designed and built tanks!  Some hobby huh?  Well he made one that had solid rubber tires, and without the tank treads on it, it would go 110 mph !!  With the treads on it would still do 80 mph!!  The Military, said we have our own tank that we designed, and we don't need yours.  He challenged them to a test at their obstacle course.  They finally agreed, and all the big brass Muckity Mucks were there with their smug faces waiting for their tank to out do this amateur's tank.  Well Christie let them go first.  The course consisted of a row of logs, concrete stumps, rows of barbed wire, and a big sump pit.  Well the Military's tank got hung up on the concrete stumps, and couldn't get off.  So Christie gets in his tank, and pushes their tank off of the stumps, and goes on through the course, and then back through it, and finally gets out of his tank, and the Big boys, were leaving, and refused to talk to him.  A few years later, some time in mid 30's , he contacted the Military, and told them he had a completely new design, and it was his best tank yet.  The military looked at it, and said, it wasn't suited for military purposes.  He showed it to Germany, and they said how much?  So he sold it to Germany.  He also invented an amphibious vehicle, that crossed the Hudson River at the worst time of the year, and it went straight across, and then back.  The Military, said nah.  They didn't have an amphibious vehicle at the time, that could even get down the banks to try to cross.  Well in WWII we had the Patten tank.  Which our tank crews affectionately nicknamed the "Steel Coffin", because one round from the German tanks, and it was toast.  They had so many crews killed, that they were taking infantry soldiers, and giving them a days training, and sending them out the recently repaired tank, some still had the remains  that were spattered inside from the last crew.  The only saving grace was we had a whole bunch of them, and they were easily repaired.  It was under armored, and under armed, with a sorry excuse of a 75 MM cannon on it.  It took multiple hits, from two or more Pattens to disable a German tank.  Oh, the German tanks, that were running rings around our tanks, with their 88MM guns, that would go through both sides of the Patten tank, and destroying our tanks, like clay pigeons !  Well, according to our Military geniuses, it was not suited for military purposes!  It was the very tank that Christie tried to sell to our Military.  The Germans called it the Tiger.
I would love to have that water cooled Machine Gun, but I would really rather have the German MG 34!  It was the precursor to the MG 42.  The 34 was very accurate, had a slower rate of fire, and was light.  The 42 on the other hand, was not as accurate, and fired well over a thousand rounds a minute, and not as light.  They had to fire it in short bursts, to keep the barrel from over heating, and to conserve ammo.  The German troops didn't like it for that reason.  Both the 34, and 42 were very reliable, and had the nifty feature, of being able to change a barrel in under 10 - 15 seconds.  You flipped a lever, on the side, and flipped up the cover, and used the heavy gloves, to remove the shot out, or overheated barrel, and replaced it with the spare, closed the cover, flipped the lever back in place, and charged a round, and you were back in business.  Thankfully we incorporated some of the features of those guns in our M60.  I would still rather have the MG 34 though. ;) Or a Browing .50 caliber!   Boy, I bet your Son enjoyed that Birthday party!  A pony just don't cut it compared to a Real Machine Gun!  Why even a Payasso wouldn't be able to compete with that! :o ;D  Boy if you played army with that kid, you had better be sure you were on his side! :o :o  Man, I never had a Birthday party like that!  Hey, Mom, I'm going over to a friends house and play army. Ok sweet heart, be careful and watch out for snakes, Oh yeah, we WILL be looking for them!!! >:D >:D........... ;D ;D  Diego is a lucky Kid to have friends like that!  Diego,....hmmmm wasn't that the real name of .....Zorro?.... :o  I always felt bad for poor ol Sargent Garcia.  He wasn't a baddie, and just wanted ample food, and drink, and to retire on a pension, and maybe mooch a meal, and drink or two, now and then.  I felt bad for him, because of all the sashes he had to replace, because of all the big Z slashes in them.  Sargent Garcia!!  Si El Capitan?
What is the meaning of this?!  You have a big Z slashed in your sash!  Oh, well you see El Capitan, last night, "when the full moon was bright, came the horseman known as Zorro"....... :o ;D ;D All rights reserved by Walt Disney Movie Productions, Inc.  Sorry, my childhood intruded there for a moment.  The Name Diego just triggered it.  I am trying to remember Zorro's last name....Diego.......or Don Diego somthing or another.....Anyway, I could not get over the fact that they couldn't tell it was him.  It was just little eye mask, and he never disguised his voice.  Or why they couldn't trail his horses tracks in the day time to find the secret cave that he hid the horse in.  Dang, I will be up all night trying to think of his last name.  Why couldn't you have named your Son Victor, Nelson, or Bob ? ::) ::)

Stickbender, I enjoyed reading all about the military history.  I guess you can tell I love history.  I love most subjects actually… I have a passion for learning.  Unfortunately, our military was not ready at all for WW11 and German made weapons were far superior.. El Capitan was a funny character that got picked on my Zoro.. When I was a kid I wanted to be Zoro too…  Well the name is an interested story.. Since our last name is Rivera and I love art and we can trace our lineage back to the great Mexican painter, Diego Rivera.  That’s part of it and I just love the name.  I was not very common at all until Dora the Explorer and Ice Age ruined it for the uniqueness and kids started being named Diego… but none are Diego Rivera!!!!  Unfortunately, that is not the end of the story… The rest of the story is that his parents could not compromise on his name, so his entire name is, Elijah Cipriano Diego Rivera

Oh, is he going to cuss you when he has to write his full name on checks, and documents.  Really really, small writing.... ::) ;D
When I was in the Military, I had some Puerto Rican, and Mexican Friends that multiple names also. Something to do with various names of Family members being added. Good thing Texans didn't adopt that habit.  Hey, looky thar, it's Ol Billy Bob, Joseph, Michael, David, Houston...... ;D ;D

Holy Schmackers that is a lot of snakeskins, are you not afraid you might have a live one  you`ve missed among the frozen ones? The Copperhead is that a very poisonous species? Here in Norway we have three species of snakes and they are all protected. One of them is mildly poisonous, but you should see a doc if bitten.I is rather seldom to see any of them.  Markus.

Nope George.  They are flesh side up or out...   lol.... yea.. me too.  I know that area has lots of rattlers in it.. I sure can give it a try  ;D

Markus, it is a lot of skins ::) Nope, they are all usually dead when I get them and I cut the head off before I begin to skin them.  The Cooperhead is very poisonous, but thank God I have not had a problem.. We have lots and lots of different types of snakes here in Texas..

My wife's family is from Norway. Here Grandfather was full Norwegian and his last name was Grimland.

Cipriano, is that last picture a coach whip?  We have them down here, but the last one I saw, was when I was about ten years old.  I remember them as being a Little lighter in color, but pretty much the same as the one in the picture you have there.

I think I am George.. Stickbender it is.  It is long.  About 6 ft long.  It looks like a milky cream color when the skin dries out.  Pretty pattern too if the bow is painted a bright color and helps the pattern come out.  Only the 3 rd one I have come across.

Awesome thread, Cipriano!
Hey, I was speaking with a guy at the Classic and his method of preparing the skins was to use a mixture of 16 oz. of Glycerine with 6 oz. of ... I want to say Isopropyl Alcohol.  He soaks it repeatedly for a day, painting it on and then gives it 2-3 coats for another 2-3 days and then they are done.  He claimed to me they were more elastic and water repellant that way.
Don't know anything about it or if I got the second ingredient right, but, thought I'd pass on the info.
Got your quiver in the works.

Speak with you soon.

Cipriano, maybe larger denominations of bills will work, along with the Chocolate.   ::)
Eddie, the last one I saw, was when I was about 13 or 14 years old. Loooonnnnng time ago. ;D   As I remember it, it was about six feet long or so.  Never saw a small one.  Yeah, unfortunately it is getting to be that way pretty much everywhere. With all the golf courses, and housing projects.   How is your back doing?  Mine is giving me a fit, but it is starting to get a little better.  Been cutting trees, and such, and I think that aggravated it.  Cipriano seems to have some nice rock in his area.  Maybe you will be in his neck of the woods, on one of your road trips, and you can stop by his place, and go look for rock, and such, and maybe some pre history artifacts.

Reminds me of a poem by Baxter Black about how maybe we can appease the PETA types by using road killed furbearing animals instead of hunting them:

"MAKE IT A HABBIT TO PICK UP YOUR RABBIT.
DON'T LEAVE HIM TO DRY IN THE SUN.
FOR THE SAKE OF A GARMENT RECYCLE YOUR VARMINT.
IT'S TACKY TO JUST HIT AND RUN!"

Apologies to Baxter Black, Cowboy Poet and former large animal Veterinarian, for any misquotation of the excerpt.

I don't know if you still can , I imagine so, but when I was a kid, I remember seeing glass, porceline and chalk eggs, just for the purpose of getting hens to lay, and to replace eggs that you took from them, so they would continue to sit, and lay eggs.  At least that was what I was told then.... ;)   Hmmm, I wonder if you took those big plastic Easter eggs, and put in a nest box, if that would encourage her to lay bigger eggs?

Wish he was 5' longer. ;)

Most of it stayed on the sticky trap.  There's a little on the hide up near the head which is where he was stuck the worst.  I figured I'd let the skin dry and then put some goo gone on it.

That would make a pretty sheath cover. :)

Gus that was not a rattler.  Looks like a blotched water snake to me.  My trade bow has a similar pattern, though much more subdued.  Here's the picture I found of it:

I could be wrong though.

Katt, I've only been elk hunting once in Montana and didn't take a shot, though I had a couple close encounters.  I'd love to go, and would be happy going after a cow, but I'm not much of a horseman and the altitude wiped me out last time. ::)  I could bring you osage staves?

You should've come hog hunting back in March or April.  My last trail cam pictures at the lease  were showing daytime temps in the 105 degree range.  I'm  tentatively planning my next lease get-together on July 8-10.  Want to come down and swelter?  It could be 110 by then. 8)

Esteban, man that looks perfect  :) My daughter is gonna love that!! I told her she had a quiver on it's way soon from Florida, bit she doesn't have a clue what it looks like.. It's my college colors too..

I'm glad you like the skins. Man they always look better when they go far away... One of them a teacher brought me, and the other one abuddy from church got it for me after his daughter killed it. Can't hardly wait..

Gracias amigo,
Cipriano

Speaking of applying skins... ;D...once they are glued down with TBIII what kind of tape do you folks use to remove the scales?  Do you pull the tape against the rows (from tail to head) or the other direction?

Thanks!!

Excellent, just what I needed to know Scott.  Do you peel from tail to head or from head towards the tail?  Just wondering if one direction is more prone to tear the skin.  Thanks again.
