Primitive Skills / Re: Dandelion root "coffee"
« Last post by Jeembo on Today at 07:50:33 am »

Taste? Not bad.  It has a nice, pleasant roasty flavor without the bitterness or sharpness of actual coffee. A bit bland. The next batch, I'll grind the roots and/or use more. Would be nice mixed with chicory root, maybe, but that doesn't grow around here. I put a little honey in mine; the Badgerling added a splash of milk, both with satisfactory results. It isn't coffee, but next time I feel the need for a warming, roasty tasting drink without the caffeine, this might do the trick. And of course, it's extraordinarily affordable.

Adding a bit of chicory(around 1/10th compared to main grind) and some cinnamon(like 3rd a tablespoon) made wonders for me personally. Give it a shot

Nice score!

Have you thought about inviting him out to shoot his father's gun in remembrance? You could give him pointers on feeding and cleaning so that this legacy gun isn't as likely to turn to scrap.

Arrows / Re: How to preserve your feathers?
« Last post by JW_Halverson on Today at 12:22:09 am »
Dropping them in the freezer for extended time isn't a bad idea. The freezing for longer periods of time dessicates the insects and even their larvae/eggs. It will also dry out the feathers in the long run and I have found that the feathers will strip better if they get steamed before attempting. I just set up the teakettle on the burner and get a good stream of steam blasting from the spout. By running the feather through the steam it plumps the barbules/web of the feather AND moisturizes the central spine.

I strip 99% of my feathers for arrows and find that steaming them takes some of the brittleness out of the feather. Fewer feathers break off early and I almost always get a full strip from tip of the feather all the way down to the sip of the quill.

I picked up some PRIMO Michigan hop hornbeam "ironwood" at the Tennessee Classic. One of them will be a tribute bow to Rich Rousseau/half-eye, a shorter bendy handle sorta thing. This bow of yours just confirms that plan.

Thanks for sharing this sweet darling!
