Too bad this is out of travel distance for me. I would be all over it.Welllll, if we pack light then we could travel together.
Not only am I in on the challenge but I'm definitely in on a little game of bow and arrow war >:D one more thing I think we should add is let's do a flight shoot at that bear across the pond.
I may be getting in on this, except for the dodge the arrow part. My reflex's aren't what they used to be.
Hummmm gots me think'n............ :-\
DBar

Just cut up a deer today and kept the back sinew, should be enough to make a little sinew backed- back scratcher bow.
Well, doggone it! Now my wheels are turning. >:(
Tuukka mentioned a bow made from a strip of goat horn about 2 feet long and sinew backed shot a crude arrow 250 yards.

We have thought of that, and i am contemplating it...a horn bow wood give you the longest draw, and handle a heavier weight...so how far do u think a 24" hornbow can draw? Haha >:D
Here is his quote:
Last May we tested a tiny, old hornbow at our flight range. Less than two feet long, a thin slab of kinda Yumi-shaped goat horn backed with moose sinew. No wooden core. A mellow reflex and no siyahs apart from slight recurves bent into the horn ends. The maker of the bow had told that he had made his longest shot years ago with this bow. We were sceptical.
The full draw of the horn bow would've been about 16". But none of us could draw the bow that far fingerstyle: the string angle was digit-crushing. At just 12 inches of draw the bow would surely fail to deliver, even though it pulled a respectable 47# at that draw.
Our 16", 130-grain arrows were crude to the extreme: roughly beltsanded, unround, unsmooth, untested hickory sticks suitable for kindling. But they sure did disappear into the sky at launch.
The best shot (out of six) from the tiny bow was measured at 250 yards. This with baaad arrows and a massive underdraw. It seemed impossible for this bow not to reach 300 yards and beyond with a full draw, a trained thumb-ring loose and finely crafted arrows.
It'd be interesting to make an ultra-short sinew-backed 50-pound wood bow and see what it can do. Maybe 24 inches nock-to-nock, with a 12-inch draw? Very short draws clearly have potential in the Flight game.

I thought it was established that horn bows were over rated??? >:D

That bow wasn't mine. I was more concerned that if peak performances were achieved with these bows you guys might hurt each other, even with the foam tips on the arrows.
True story. Before I was considered bright enough to get a lightening bug excited, my brother talked me into a rock chucking contest. "We'll take turns throwing rocks at each other and see who gets the closest. I'll go first," he said.
As it were, not only did he lose on the first toss, he was aiming at my head - which I considered blatantly out of bounds! But my instant headache precluded me from making a point of it.
Does anyone want to establish a benchmark for us to "shoot" for?
And 2-strand string? :o :)
That little 30" bighorn bow was 70# @ 18". I didn't use anything like a flight arrow. It was a 20" 11/32 cedar target arrow. Can't remember the weight with the heavy field point but it was of course way under 700 grains. Still could not get it to shoot much over 140 fps. You won't catch me telling tall tales. Still looking to make a impressive shooter, but it won't be out of expensive bighorns. I do however have some scraps that would make a perfect 25" bow that I would love to test to pieces.
Thanks for the honesty Chuck ;)Pearl Drums, thanks for pointing it out, I didn't see that.
Thunder keep in mind this is Marshall, Michigan. I know there is a Marshall, MO shoot, I believe.
Eff it! I'm getting in on this! I'm gonna start mine tonight! Who should I send it to, so they can shoot it at Marshall?

Sweet!!! U could bring it to the classic if its done by then and if your gonna make it,and give it to one of us who will also be at marshall(clint, bill, scott, guy,me or whoever else)...heck if i have one of mine done ill bring mine down to tennersee n we can go plink some arras with em
What are the rules for the contest? Is it going to be a flite shoot? It looks like it may turn into a fun match. You all might want to start talking arrows.
One rule...natural materials bow totaling no longer than 24" long...
No flight shooting per say,but im sure we'll be launching them across the pond at a bear target..dont know how far that is..80-90 yards? Not sure if theres an area or field there on the clubs property thats big enough to flight shoot...altho the adjoining properties have some big enough fields...
What wood you setup for arrows steve? This is out of my realm of experience...i was thinking small 2" long fletching, and use a 2 fletch instead of the 3...n then experimenting with a couple diff diameter shafts untill i found ones that flew best...any recommendations there? Any front or rear end barrels, both,or just parallel shafts? Id rather them be as light as possible, but still maintain semi decent flight...im not taking it to serious..jus wanna be in the ballpark, and not looking to smash flight records if ya know what i mean. ;)
Very NICE Stringman! Can we get a Full Draw Pic??? ...maybe some stats and dimensions? :)Ditto.... :-\ ??? ???

I also say we make soft blunt tipped arrows with flu flu feathers on em and play dodge ball!!! >:D
Now lets see who else is in...show me the goods boys!!! i know some of you have started as well
We may have a surprise entry coming in. Bub, did you hear the same thing?
Sure did pearlie, I'm planning my mini bow right now
I'm planning my mini bow right now
Good looking little bow there Bill. I like your design, I bet an arrow from that one would bruise old Clint pretty good. :D
Lol, I'm just picturing folks at the meet that aren't on this forum showing up and seeing all these yahoos running around with tiny bows like madmen, lol.
If these minis are over 40# could they be used for hunting or is there just not enough draw length to build grunt?
And not very accurate for hunting
If these minis are over 40# could they be used for hunting or is there just not enough draw length to build grunt?
At 12" draw they would not store enough energy for hunting but with light enough arrows could get some good cast.

Sorry, am a bit confused, I know crossbows have a huge amount more poundage but they operate off a short draw?
A 100# crossbow has less power than a 50# longbow.

Got another started
That's a fact dbar, but i gotta get one built before i shoot it
atta man! For some reason I couldn't see the pics. ??
Good job on that bow Pearly! When judging the speed of scaled down bows instead of shooting them say at 10 grains per pound you would shoot them at 10 grains per pound of stored energy. If you shot that little bow with about a 75 grain arrow it would probably go about as fast as your big bows.I'm with ya Steve... ;)
Hey Guys...
I'm having a little trouble with my hunting arrows....can't seam to come up with a good point.
What would you go with, a mini stone point or a mini trade point? I've seen some mighty fine mini stone points on here in the past... :) :)
DBar
Bill, can't you find any 2 penny duplex nails?   That's an idea ...it's got me thinkn.... :)
I'm thinking to try the mini-trade points made out of carpet knife blades. Can easily get two per disposable blade, and old dulled ones would work just fine... I saw a demo online that looked a bit cheesy, ...but it could work I expect.
Im asking for trouble with this one!!! >:D 8) almost ready for some sinew...im def pushing the limits on this one even with sinew imho ::)WOW... :o Would like to see you just string that one in person.... :) ;)....and then watch you shoot it....bet it's not easy. But it sure is cool.

Between us we're going to have enough of these little buggerz to arm an entire company of Lilliputian archers!
OneBow
Well, here is a sneak preview of what I'm working on. It's far from being a bow.
Am learning that this is TOUGH
If it was easy anyone could do it😈
Bub, there ain't no buffalo in MI. ;)
Here's a pic of version number 1. Still working on a couple more. We're at 27.36 pounds @10.5 inches... 8)

No, I don't shoot off that side. I also don't leap five feet off the ground, snatch an arrow shot at me out of the air, and shoot it back before my feet hit the floor. ;) This was just so I could show the camera how far it was drawn and to look at the tiller.
OneBow
Got it shooting.Got what shooting? ???
......Shoot'n these suckers is tough isn't it..... :)

Wondered who'd comment 1st. Retirement garb.
<snip>It's a bit too long ... 27". <snip>
<snip>I vote if anyone tries to sneak in an extra half inch it immediately gets burned in the fire...
Is there a width or draw weight limit?
I'm finding there is an ultra fine line between accurate and shoot far with these 24" bows!
I want to be clear here. If a rule is not specified, then its ok to do. Like you didnt say i cant paint my bow red, so i can. If you dont say i cant do something then that something is om to do, right?

Before anyone answers Sleek on this I'd like to remind you all that he was a sailor, ...which means he's a slippery fella. If there is a way to get by with a thing, he'll find it. We may need a proviso that pushes the weight back toward the judges of the competition. Perhaps a line in the rules that says something to the effect of:8) 8) 8) All determinations of the contest officials are final from the time they are made and may not be contested. Any contrivance deemed to be outside of the spirit and intent of the contest can be unilaterally disqualified and the offending minibow will be immediately sacrificed to the campfire. Objections to the decisions made by contest officials must be filed immediately with a $75 filing fee or a fifth of the contest official's favorite liquor. ...after which a decision will be rendered that will exactly match the original decision made by the contest official. 8) 8) 8)

I volunteer to be a contest official, Basil Hayen or Woodford Reserve will do offenders.

..you have good taste my friend😀
Sleek....Onebow, you guys going to be there?
DBar
He must be scared of a little string slap.
I dont remeber seeing the letters c-r-o-s-s when i said "BOW" ..... ::) ;)
Anything not restricted by the rules is fair game rigjr?
I knew that would come up :P
Attaching and rigging a small natural materials only type handle would be ok if you think you need to be a cheater and use a crutch >:D i wont say any names..ahem clint >:D
Hawkster: We need some clarification. Earlier I saw you posted 24" total. Others have posted 24" Tip to Tip. Please clarify. Wouldn't want to have a bow end up in the fire! >:D :-[
Im struggling with arrow flight now. I just need to take some sandpaper to the arrows until they fly better.Did best I could with bareshaft testing. But it's hard to see the lil suckas fly ... especially in the basement!
Concealed carry archery set. I love it. Do you need a permit for that?
Took one of bows & couple arrows to Mon night indoor 3d shoot. Everyone thought it was "cute kids" toy. Until put 2 arrows into backstop 20 yds out. And 2 outta 3 into laying down deer @ 13 yds. Then there was a bit more interest!
Seems like a lot of guys are working on minis. Just out of curiosity are all you guys planning on coming to Marshall?
<snip>Knoll, glad to see you are playing by the rules.

Not quite following the rules yet! Even 0.3 inches extra yardage is likely still enough to get you 'burned'. Best get out the hatchet...

Patrick
That's awesome dbar, i think I'll make a thumb ring to shoot with
Thanks greg, mike i got something else planned besides three under😉
Thanks, I feared it might have something to do with Joseph Marshall III from Rosebud Reservation, but he is not an expert in archery anyway - as I have found out in the meantime.
Five years ago he accepted my order for bow, arrows, quiver and bow case plus a deposit in the amount of $ 750. Two years later he told me that he "has no time to make the items but he would refund me". Which he never did, he kept my money. I'm still waiting for the refund.
I might try burning the nocks in with a heavy paper clip and a torch.
how many strands of B50 do I need .....
how many strands of B50 do I need .....
I use 1 strand per 5 lbs.
Very nice, Guy! I'll bet that was fun to make.
That's awesome buckeye! Find a knome and let's see the FD! >:D
Oh man, that's a wicked little thing Matt. Have fun stringing that one. It might jump out of your hands and across the workshop.
Yes DBar, It does shoot! Shot a dozen or so from it on Sunday.
Matt, I would use the densest wood you can find, the arrow will have such low mass as it is it will have problems fighting the fletches. I had some water buffalo horn sliced up into .010 thicknesses for fletches but I don't have any left. something very stiff and thin and maybe 1/8 high. paper might work. Tonkin cane is almost double the density of wood if you could find some short pieces of that.
Matt, you can get 1/4" solid bamboo rods in the cake decorating isle at walmart.

Ya bake too, huh?
Finished up my mini bow, now to get some arrows to shoot out of it
And maybe a sub prize for the best "looking" mini bow..........
.....turkey feather backing is mighty purty.....:)
So is horn belly lol
We'll have to do a story or at a minimum, line them all up for some pics.
A bow 12" taller than the shooter would be even for every one no matter how tall or short they are.
Hmm, bows taller than archers, first to make a yumi wins, lol.
I hope we don't shoot a full 20 we might not ever get done
I'm going to leave a trail of hot pink bamboo skewers through the skunk cabbage. ;D
Mike nice looking stuff right there........
DBar
Guy they will shoot wayyyyy over the bears back. 110-150 yards should be no problem. Tip weight is what dictates a lot of that.
If it would ever quit raining here I will try mine for distance.
I've been tell'in you guys these little things shoot....The guys at Moontree saw a mini feather backed bow shoot at a 100yd bedding deer target. and was just a bit over and to the right of it.... that bow still had more distance in it Sorry Guy holding arrow info confidential until Marshall. :) ;)
DBar
Guy it will be here and gone before we know it .................damn it..........
Are we there yet ?!!!!!!
Just bring a cobbler mix and everything will be just fine big guy!
Del .... send it to Guy. It will get shot!!If he PMs me an address I can see what shipping is like.
I know how you feel, Del. I want to make one now and i'm not going to Marshal either.
So whats stopping you😈
The bow is signed as the UK Entry ;D and posted  (I went for 5 day delivery to make sure it gets there in time )
And I already claimed the accuracy winner after the 3 clay targets I busted. So true .....so true ..............
I had an advantage. I was closer to full draw than anyone else.
You WERE at full draw lol
Amen!
Thanks again, we have the other one with us to. Eric is going to fix this one and send it back to her. Guy worked on it for a good while, the first thing he done was scrape off the blacklisters name.
Patrick
Did Blackhawk show up and shoot his? It was his idea.
Sounds good to me Clint
we are not really set up for flight shooting
we should do0 some studying up on it and get our arrows tuned better for distance.
My wife had me grilling burgers when the guys went to shoot the minis, I never took my horse out of HER stall...... :(
