Not bad at all. Looks good for a first point, and bet it would puncture a critter. Don't look like any arterial blood, so you done good.  :) As for criticism and suggestions:
#1: Keep knapping. Pay attention to cause and effect.
#2. Concentrate on making good platforms below the center line of the piece. Grind 'em good.
#3. See #1 &#2.
#4: See #1 &#2.
#5: See #1 &#2.
#6: See #1 &#2.
#7: When pressure flaking, apply more inward than downward pressure. This will make the flakes run farther across the piece. To thin points and get a good cross section, the flakes need to travel at least halfway across the point.
#8: Flakes like to follow ridges.
#9: Never try to run a flake into a concave area. It will step-fracture.
#10: See #1 & # 2.  :)

I wish i didnt go knap. I was working on a wine bottle bottom. i was rollin. This baby was the sharpest i had ever seen.  I had flakes shving hair and the edge was wicked sharp.  I must of not of been on the platform right because i put a ton of pressure on it and when i got the flake off my hand went down and i sliced it deep.  It was a fairly good cut.  I couldnt feel a thing i never once felt that cut. I went to the ER and got it sewn up.  I have to stop my knapping carrer now :'(  thats why i am upset. thats one of the main reasons and i made my dad sit there for a while and i feel bad about cost.  I never felt the cut though no pain. im not upset about that im upset about not being able to knap untill i am in college.  i am so sad because i took so much pride in knapping my first head and it was so much fun and now i must stop. Now its back to making dull ground points from a  mudlike rock i find in creeks. :P

couldnt you make some trade points? maybe its more dangerous? Sorry about gettin the cut. had me a few myself. not from knappin but knives. well goodluck. Also, what do you use for deer if you have to use dull rocks?

David , if Hillbilly is your mentor, Find some REAL BIG rocks.

Post by: Pat B on January 31, 2008, 01:26:07 am
David, the edge of that glass is way sharper than any steel on earth. So sharp, you didn't feel the cut. It breaks down to a molecular level. You will have the opportunity to knap again. Look up the John Whitakker book and read it. He told his students on the first day of class to bring leather gloves and eye protection. The next day they all had eye protection but none had gloves. By the end of the day the classroom was bloody. The next day, they all had leather gloves. ;)   Pat

ps. I'm patient! I might be 100 before I get a point from you but I'm patient. ;D

Sorry to hear that man. Parents are just looking out for you though. That's why it helps to learn "impromptu medicine man tricks" ;). Stitching yourself up, getting good at making and keeping styptics on hand, learning to put your hands and fingers in your pockets when your folks walk by ;)...

Like it was said, why don't you try some trade points for a while?

Sorry to hear about that bad cut David, cool looking first point though - I'll bet you were proud :). When you get to college or sneak out behind the shed ;D. Go ahead and wear those gloves and glasses till you get comfortable with the technique and always grind any of the edges that aren't completed..

Kegan-I will try to learn medicine tricks that would help.    Sticking my hands in my pockets lol.

Cowboy- I was extremely proud of this thats why i am so upset about having to stop.  I was wearing glasses but all i had was a palm pad.
sneaking out behind the shed ;D  Then i get some mysterious big cut and say it was a vicious squirrel. :)

Mullet-an 80#rrock with baseballbats.  WOW

Don't pay any attention to Eddie, he tends to exaggerate just a wee bit  ::) He's referring to seeing some of us manly types knapping nasty stuff like quartzite and rhyolite with big wooden billets. Eddie will take a boulder and saw it into a bejillion little triangles with his fancy slabby-machiny-thingy and then cook it in his EZ bake oven like a pan of cookies and peck and poke at it with his magnifying glass and dentist tools.  ;D  ;D  >:D

I just had an epiphany.  KEVLAR GLOVES!!!!!!!!!!.  i have hope now.  anyone know how much kevlar gloves cost?

Woodcraft sells them for about $20-30 bucks, (one glove).  Be careful though because the small flakes might be able to go through the somewhat loose weave. They were designed to prevent slicing wounds.

Did you cut the hand with the pressure flaker or the one holding the blank?  Wear it on that hand.  It's like wood carving, you only need to wear it on the hand holding the piece you're carving.  Seldom do you cut the hand holding the knife. ::)

I think you did good on your first try.

Just get a good leather glove and get back on that horse, cuts heal and their will be many more in your future ;D
Besides you can impress the girls with your battle wounds ;)

I cut thr hand holding the pressure flaker.  How would those kevlar gloves for flieting(sp?) fish work?

It would be easier to convince my mom if i had kevlar gloves because it is what bullet proof vest are made from and she is from Chicago so she doesnt understand anything

DanaM is right, girls love battlescars. I have one on the left side of my chest.(and a ton of them in my hands thanks to learning how to handle an axe with swetty hands) Got it from a glass bottle some maniac was wawing around in a mosh pit on a metal festival. I'm just happy it hit my chest and not any higher.. (or lower!) fortunately it was a clean cut and now I got a nice scar. the guy was of course taken down by security.
This makes me happy that we have free health care in finland.

The fish fillet gloves may not be Kevlar, but they would probably work, as would a heavy leather glove.

Trade points are fairly easy to make without specialized tools.  Go to Home Depot and get the largest ungalvanized nails they have.  They'll cost about ten cents each but you can get several points from one.  Heat them up, then beat them flat.  Grind or forge you some notches and cut them off with a hack saw or cut off wheel.  Sharpen with a file or stone. Pretty easy.

David:  I hate to overstate the obvious, but don't burn yourself if you forge some points.  :(  I'd hate for you to be banned from that too after a trip to the ER.  Gotta keep the folks happy.   ;D

Have fun.
