They look great to me Brian. I’ve been busy building a shed for my wife and haven’t had time to work on anything else lately but, I’m getting close with having it finished. Hopefully I’ll get back to doing something fun soon. Love this thread. Definitely got me to thinking about some of the staves I had given up on. Thanks for sharing it.

Thanks everyone who has read this thread. Especially those that take a chance on a piece of scrap. Or find something in a piece of wood that you weren’t seeing before. The ones that play with it.

Sometimes for me. The very hardest part is just looking at a stave that still needs the bark and sapwood removed and just plain getting started. It always looks like so much work. Totally overwhelming. Until you clean up that back and chase a ring. Make a perfect belly split and get it closer to bow dimensions.

It gets so much easier when you can see the bow.

PS muskyman great idea building a shed for your wife. That way she won’t be putting stuff in yours. And if you don’t have one. Well it’s a pretty convincing argument that you need one to

Thank you all for the encouraging advice!

I started chasing a ring this afternoon going very slowly. I will report back when I have made more progress on it, probably this weekend. I am determined to go slow with this project.

Way I think of this is like looking up at belly of an airplane as if it was the belly of a bow on the tiller tree.  Am I correct that the weak side lifts away from the earth and strong side dips towards the earth like a plane going into a barrel roll?

Yup

I finished my last minute errands and have run the pre-loading checklist. All is staged at the backdoor and I will pack the vehicle tonite, minus the cold stuff for the cooler. I was planning on a noon start so that I could hit this incredible Brazilian steakhouse in Sioux Falls called 'Carnivale". They have a fantastic salad bar and hot food buffet, but the big feature is the spit roasted meats that come out of the kitchen on a regular basis. Waiters/gauchos walk around with swords loaded with an unbelievable array of spit roasted meats that they slice off at your table. It is a never-ending meat-sweats inducing proteinfest! And on top of that, they have a fantastic wine list at reasonable prices. I have bitten the bullet and decided that this is not in my best interest. Last time I ate there I was unable to make the drive home to Rapid City and ended up crashing in a hotel for a 12 hour food coma. I ate so much and gained so much weight that I shed my skin like an anaconda. I am afraid the poor housekeeper that had to deal with that in the hotel was psychologically scarred for life. If I stop at Carnivale I may not actually get back on the road until the Classic is almost over!!!

As it stands, I am doing an overnite in Atchison, KS and should arrive at the Classic on Thursday late afternoon. See ya'll then!

Today I spent the morning on last minute errands in preparation for leaving for the Tennessee Classic. I got an oil change, topped up fluids, bought celery, apples, grapes, bell peppers, and some string cheese for snacking on the road. I was sorely tempted to go for the nastier sort of road snax, but my doctor's blood pressure scares me and I don't wanna show up for that appointment in July and have him loose his cool on me again.

I am bringing a stave with me. It was cut two years ago in Missouri by a guy that has recently moved to this area. He meant to learn to make bows but seems to have given up on the idea. He offered me a bunch of the staves in exchange for a bow, but I only took the two that were best suited to make decent bows. I hope to get a good run on that one stick while I am there. I hope to get under his skin this summer and get his butt in the shop and tools in his hands. I just know if he makes his own he will feel much better about it.

Fair chance of rain at the Classic, so I am looking to dig out a Goretex jacket to have on hand just in case. I have also doubled the amount of coffee grounds I am bringing in order to help folks keep their spirits up.

At this point, I have everything staged at the back door and the refrigerated goods in the fridge close at hand. All I need to do is wash out the cooler tonite. My dog has been casting nervous glances at me and I really do wish I could bring her along for ME. But she HATES travelling almost as much as she hates crowds of people. She's really an introvert and the Classic is about one of the worst situations I could throw at her, even if Pappy invited her.

I should be rolling into Twin Oaks late afternoon.
