I love making vine maple bows and this one was no exception. This started as a sweet stave from Carson at Echo Archery. It was straight and clean with a balanced reflex profile. That's a rare combination for vine maple. I've bee working some frustrating pieces of wood lately so I was ready for something more cooperative. This bow is 52#@28" and is 64" ntn. It's headed out to Wisconsin to slay some white-tails. Wisconsin is where I grew up, so I'm excited that this bow is going back to my old stomping grounds.
This was one of those bows that gave me mixed messages as I tillered it. The braced profile kept telling me that the bottom limb was too stiff, but I had to ignore that and follow the full draw and the taper. I feel confident that I did what I was supposed to do with this stave but that wiggly vine maple can give you a headache sometimes. This was definitely one of those bows that I didn't want to send out. I keep telling myself that I'll make one of these vine maple bows to keep. Maybe the next one...

Very nice work. You did well with that bottom limb. I can see how tricky it was! Looks like a good tiller to me and your finishing work is always top notch.

Beautiful bow. The dye job looks great.

Really does make a beautiful bow.

I can see why you you want to keep it, beautiful bow man!
-
That is a beautiful bow, I like the stain also.
Off subject, that is also a good looking background in your picture. Kinda looks like the foreground is a picture and the back ground is a painting.
-

-
That's a beauty bow Weylin, great finish work.
I have a love/hate relationship with VM, it might be just the stuff I have access to.
I've worked Oregon VM, and it seemed nicer to work
-
Thats a sweet bow Weylin, cool finish work and excellent bend. Love that landscape in the background of the pics too.
-
Nice bow, you guys must have much more swirling grain vine than I have access too, unless that's what your picking? Where are you at exactly.
-
Very nice! I can see why you want to keep that beaut:)
-
Outstanding! Love those tips and dye job.
-
That's a stunning bow in every way.
Vine maple is an extraordinary bow wood. I have a few examples of vine maple bows in my collection. Although I don't have a chronograph, I'd swear that vine maple is faster than other equivalent bows from other common bow woods. It seems to store more energy.
-
Thanks for the kind words, everyone! It's always a pleasure sharing my bows here.
Neuse, I have the good fortune of living in a beautiful place here in western Oregon. I even get to hunt elk, deer and bear in my backyard. Now if I can actually manage to shoot one. ::)
Wizardgoat, that's interesting. I've never worked with vine maple from other places. Every piece of wood is so different it might be hard to have an objective comparison.
Vinemaplebows, I didn't cut this particular piece. I don't know where Carson cut it. I just look for something half way straight when I'm cutting vine maple. I'm in Willamina but have cut all over western oregon
Ghost Dog, It certainly makes a sweet bow. I can't attest to chronograph results but they always feel pretty snappy to me.

Super nice Weylin. Great tiller, very cleam lines.
