This is a bow that I made on a camping trip last summer. It was a fun project, but I think the wood was too wet. It took bad set, and all the bark eventually started to crack off,
so I threw it in the corner till last week. Its a weird thing when random inspiration hits I guess. I scraped off all the loose bark, and thought I'd try to heat treat it.
A couple big cracks in the belly showed up, I filled them with super glue and pressed on.
Im growing more and more impressed with this wood, being bone dry is key with it i think. Will never break, and quite snappy.
If I were to make a stone age bow, it would probably look pretty similar to this. A thumb sized stave, not alot of wood needs to be removed.
2 ply sinew string, I know the tiller isn't spot on, but I like it just fine. 49" ntn, 49# at 25"

Your right at 90 with that string. She's maxed out man! Ocean spray is some mean wood, no doubt. And heavier than lead.
-
Cool little bow. How accurate are you able to be with it?
-
I agree it is snappy stuff.....but it will break....loudly ::) iv heard .....love to get some some day
-
Lovely lil thing ... and the pic backgrounds are spectacular!
-
PD- she is definitely maxed out! Those lil nocks won't do much for holding the string on, I have my arrows all marked at max draw, just in case! This stuff can take some serious abuse
RPS3- I guess as accurate as I usually am. ;)I usually shoot short bows though, so nothing felt to shaky for me. I shoot "hunchback" style
;D
-
Cool bow. I would love to try that wood sometime.
-
you sure took everything that stick could give! nice work. 8)
-
Nice job Goat on a short stick that probably did not look like much at the beginning, another work of art. Great job on incorporating the pith removal.
-
Nice looking shorty.
-
Very nice bend wizardgoat, looks even and balanced...like the sinew string also
Don

Lookin good Goat, tiller looks pretty good to me. Tough stuff indeed
-
That's really my sort of bow, about as simple as can be and deadly efficient. Thanks for sharing
-
:D funny little thing, I really dig your style, very nice one and a serious hunting bow ;)
-
Ya got all the bend outta that one!!! :)
-
Cool little bow, I like how you went with the 2 ply sinew string.
-
Wiz, very nice re-do right there. Looks to be a fine hunting bow to me.

I like it. Down n dirty. Tiller looks great to me goat. Maxed out for sure.
-
That's some bend!!!
Cool little bow ;)
-
How can i put this , u da man! Yeah that sounds right. Not only r u spittin em out but they r beaut's. Great work sir, love ur bows
-
Cool little bow Goat and nice save too. I realy like the hollow pith area on that oceanspray. It surely does have that paleo look too. I can see that bow in a turkey blind this spring. Danny
-
Man that's a nice looking stick goat!
-
Clever little bow! I have done some with that exact profile from little plum suckers and trees, with great succes, but they were a good deal longer, in the high 50's. So, both you and oceanspray got me beat.
It sure is fun to just whip out your pocketknife and tiller out a little project bow, or kid's bow, isn't it?
-
Thanks guys, I've been getting my mitts into more of this stuff recently.
For bows as well as arrows
-
That's a sweet little bow. :D Did you do the recurves when you heat treated or over the campfire? I've noticed that it likes to be dry too. Makes me wonder if it's like hickory and wants to be in the single digit MC range? After my last attempt at keeping the bark on failed I think I've given up on that, maybe. :-\
Nice bow!
-
beautiful bow dude! ya got some serious bend outa that sucker
-
Nice!
Makes me want to lay with some vine maple.
-
Nice bend!
-
Thanks guys.
DC, I heat treated with a heat gun first, bent my curves in with steam, then heated those up while still in the form. yes? It seems like you can't really speed dry OS.
-
I enjoy seeing these "simple" bows as much as the fancy ones. I wouldn't want to get hit by an arrow out of it.
Really cool little stick!
-
I am digging those side pin nocks. I have never seen that before. The look especially cool with the ocean spray, pith, grain, and bark! Nice work on the sinew string. Oh and the bow itself is pretty cool. Nice bend!
-
That's a slick little stick man. Nice work.
-
Wow! Cool little bow! What a great job tillering! Nice work!
-
Thanks again boys! ;D
-
Now thats how to make a serious weapon from a small stick. I like it, simple yet deadly.
-
Too cool! Just plain awesome! Josh
-
Thats's some serious bend on a cool looking primitive stick. Great work man.
