Title: 2023 Arrow Trade
Post by: Trapper Rob on September 26, 2023, 04:53:04 pm
Who all would be interested in doing the arrow trade this year?

I'm in.  :OK
Can't wait to get started, and seeing what everyone else has to offer. These trades always get folks to step out of the box for their recipient.

What!, none of the 86 people that have looked at this thread are willing to put themselves out and make 1 arrow for another Arrow Trade, something we have done here on PA for years?   (A)

What's the pre-requesits (sp?) to be a part of this?  I think it would be cool, but I don't know that my arrows are worthy.

Aaron your arrow will be fine. Wooden shaft and real feathers. Shaft can be natural or a wood shaft you buy as long as it's not aluminum or anything like that that's man made.

I been laid up for some time now for medical reasons. Might be weeks till i can work a draw knife or swing an axe, let alone draw a bow. Just this weekend was the first time i have been able to do anything in the shop in what seems like forever, so things have made a turn for the better now. I have all the raw materials ready to go for an arrow build. Good reason to get back to doing what I enjoy. I'm in.

Date and sign, got it. I have some fine tipped paint pens that seem to work well under finishes.

I started on a new shoot shaft right after signing up so its good and straight now as well as having a good taper. Knapped out a good point( I feel) but may try and again on that. Hope to be complete or almost complete in a week or so. I may yet have your address Rob, if not i will Pm you when complete. Regardless i will let you know when i send.

I have a couple "almost" arrows in the shop. I hope today to shoot a couple to confirm they shoot well before I put a point on it. Gotta finish one of the many points I have started. I believe I can ship both the arrow and the knapped point I owe the arrow head trade before middle of November.  Paul

I had a little set back this morning while preparing to package my trade arrow. I'm trying to make my shipping container 30"(for USPS more than 30" add $15 to ship total) and my arrow with the point is 31". I'll remove the head and make the arrow just less that 30" including the point. This shouldn't take me more that a few days to rectify this dilemma.  :-[   :OK

So how do you all.box your arrows for shipping? Working on boxing my arrow and beginning to work it won't get to destination in one piece. Suggestions?

Thanks, Paul
Title: Re: 2023 Arrow Trade
Post by: Pat B on November 12, 2023, 01:19:15 pm
Paul, I used a 2" cardboard tube with foam inside to support the arrow head and nock and thin wood circles at each end taped heavily on. Be sure to contain any arrow point securely so the arrow won't push out from either end.
Title: Re: 2023 Arrow Trade
Post by: paulc on November 12, 2023, 03:20:12 pm
Thanks Pat. I don't have a shipping tube laying around. I did find some of that black foam pipe insulation. I was able to use that to protect the arrow. I think it'll be okay as long as it doesn't get caught in a door or something....Will ship Mon or Tues.

My package from Pat arrived yesterday!  Amazing arrow and an extra surprise of 6 additional cane shafts.  Below is the explanation that Pat left in the package.

Hill cane arrow w/ eastern 2 fletch Cahokia style.  Stone point by Eric Garza.  Pitch glue, moose sinew w/ pitch varnish sealer.  6 extra hill cane shafts, one cut to length, somewhat straightened w/ point taper.

He also shared how he cuts for the points and nocks.

Here are a few pics, I'll add some more as well.  Many thanks Pat!

I am not familiar with this style of 2 fletch, but it's pretty cool.  I'm curious about the one side that's cut slightly different?  Is the a specific reasoning?  Really clean sinew wraps too!

Good looking arrow you got from Pat Aaron. 2 fletch is a pretty cool style!

I got slowed down on my project with indecision on how to finish it up. All primitive or use modern paints and finishes? Tested out some new ideas on a test shaft, so going to keep to all natural materials. I hate to give a timeline but I'll have the point glued on tomorrow then can have some fun doing something different with this one. Should be all smooth sailing from here.

Nothing special about the fletching, Aaron. After I mounted the two fletch I burned the pattern on a feather burner and that's the way it came out. The tails didn't get burned except for the one. It's only cosmetic. If you'd prefer you can cut the 3 tails off to match the other. Sharp scissors will do the trick.

Ok thanks Pat, I was just curious.  I think it turned out really cool, no scissors to be used on this one  :) it's already got a spot hanging over my work bench.

Post by: paulc on November 15, 2023, 12:51:10 pm
speaking of finishing arrows this project taught me I don't have a good system for finishing arrows.  Once point and fletching is in place I found it very difficult to get a finish on the shaft in those areas...do most of you put a "finish" on shaft after testing the shaft bare?  And then add point and fletching?  what is your way getting a finish on without getting it all over fletching etc?  I guess nothing wrong with a bare, no finish shaft?  Paul
Title: Re: 2023 Arrow Trade
Post by: Pat B on November 15, 2023, 01:22:18 pm
With my cane arrows I don't use a finish only seal the sinew wraps with pitch varnish. On doweled shafts or hardwood shoot shafts I seal them once I get them straight. I do like to spin shafts on my finger tip to insure the shaft lines up so I sometimes add a point first then seal them. I've used spray satin poly, hand dipped in satin poly or added Tru-Oil as a finish then when that dries add the fletching. Be sure whatever finish you use it is compatible with your fletch adhesive.

Got a package from paulc today. Think its a river cane shaft/turkey wing fletching/and a knapped madison style point all held together with sinew and pitch glue. Great example of a eastern woodlands arrow. Hope to be able to take some pictures tomorrow and get them posted. Thanks Paul!

My arrow is all finished up just need to do the packaging and shipping.

It is Mike...the shaft is some kind of landscape/exotic cane that grows striped light/dark green here in Savannah.  Pretty sure it is not native but it works.  Turkey fletching from a buddy who had some wings/tails that decided he wasn't going to do anything with.  Sinew is from my rifle hunting of deer on Fort Stewart and pitch mostly collected on Fort Stewart.  It shot really well from my 50lb osage bow, 27-28"ish draw...I hope the shaft stayed straight!  I left a couple sister shafts in my garage and they seemed to bow a bit with the humidity :-(

Best, Paul

Here are some Pics from the arrow I got from paulc. Interesting fletching as the cock feather is shorter, not sure you can see except in the full lenght pic. I might need to test that out sometime. Any thoughts behind that Paul? But its great to have a back story behind pretty much all the materials! Thanks again Paul!

That’s a nice arrow Mike nice point to Paul. I wish I could have gotten in this trade. I always enjoy the arrow trade, but I have been way too busy. Enjoy looking in once in awhile though.

I usually straighten shafts and then spray on a coat of clear satin. Then haft my point. Then I paint my markings on. I like putting on a clear finish before cresting. It helps prevent the paint from bleeding and makes my lines sharper. Also can wipe off if I make a mistake.

Then after my crest dries I lock it under a couple coats of sprayed on clear satin and then fletch and seal sinew.

Glad to hear it got there Rob. Raw shafts are arrowwood viburnum same as the the arrow. Point is from some of the best quality flint ridge I dug from Nethers a few years ago. 2 feather goose fletching, Same way I have made my hunting arrows, got the idea to round off the the backs of the feathers from a Jack Crafty video and his research into the style. I like to round  them as it keeps the feathers clear of my fingers. Really like how it looks and they fly just fine. Had to use some rattle can clear coat on the words because the pitch varnish made the paint marker run. Best I got with this arrow  :)
