Tower pvc pipe or a stiff cardboard tube is what I used in the past.

Shipped out the trade arrow today, I used a stiff cardboard tube to ship it in.

Finished my arrow up this weekend and should be sending it out in the next day or so.
It's a self nocked hill cane arrow with small turkey feathers done in a 3 feather tangential fletch, hafted trade point and sinew wraps sealed with pitch varnish.

Well I've received and should be shipping this week. I ended up using a nice piece of tonkin garden stake with a knapped point that I traded for last year from Eric who spends most of his time over on PP.

I'll try to get a picture up tomorrow of my arrow from the old hippy. Boy did I luck out on this one.

On my trade arrow I did a simple hand trimmed turkey primary. Both sides stripped from the same feather. That feather was 14" minimum so we know it's got Mojo.

Title: Re: Arrow Exchange Names & Pics
Post by: 1442 on August 25, 2015, 04:28:06 pm
I lack sinew binding the point, and wrapping and trimming the fletchings.
Its been fun
Title: Re: Arrow Exchange Names & Pics
Post by: 1442 on August 26, 2015, 03:32:52 pm
Fletchings are wrapped with yucca fiber thread
Fletching ends and point are binded with sinew and hide glue
I need to trim the fletching, seal the sinew and maybe do some decorations, not sure about the decs yet, but my recipient is out of town from what I gather and I don't have an address yet, so I might come up with something in the mean time.

Joe,
You are correct sir. That is indeed a Dan Hamblin head, one of my hunting points. The shaft is cedar heart wood (knife split) and rounded with a flint notch tool, deer sinew hafting, and Eastern turkey secondary feathers (full length) in the Eastern 2 fletch style. Hope you like it, sir.

I'm glad you like it Mountain Man.  The shaft is wild rose that straightened with heat, I used goose primaries for the fletchings, deer sinew wraps on the fletchings and point, I used red ochre for paint, the arrow head is red glass I got from the local pet store, and I sealed it all with tru oil.

Here's the arrow I made for Danzn Bar. I made a wall hanger arrow, salvaged from an arrow I cut too short because I measured wrong  :P, but at 28 1/8" from valley of the nock to base of the arrowhead it might work as a working arrow if you had a shorter draw length. It is a 50-55 spined POC shaft with three coats of Golden Oak stain and three coats of Satin Spar Urethane. Self nock, I used some B-55 Polyester bowstring material for binding the feathers to the shaft in the barber pole style that I'm fond of. This time however, I put Titebond Liquid Hide glue under the feathers instead of leaving them unglued. Not sure how I feel about the Liquid Hide glue. The arrowhead is not that primitive, I started making trade points but my co-workers insist I have to work harden them to make them work and with my little knowledge of it, I decided to put the best arrowhead that I had on it. It is not that sharp, but nevertheless I will duct tape the edges so that the chances of cutting one's self will be lessened when they opened the package.

They were Truflight full length feathers, so they're from domestic turkeys.

I made one for Mullet. It figures I'd draw a moderator on my first go round. After asking him what he'd like, he said he's never received a fishing arrow in the trade. That will soon change. I got it packed up tonight and then realized I didn't sign it or take pics. It turned out nice so I was in a hurry to get it in the mail. I'll tear into it and repack in the morning. Should be able to post a pic or two as well.
The arrow(s) I am to receive are on the way I've been told, it should be here any time now. I was told one was a secret design so I'm intrigued.

Bowtarist,
So glad you like it! I got both the trade point and the obsidian in trades. I made the bone point from the leg bone of the first deer I ever took with my bow. I tried to knap a point, but it ended up way to thick to haft. oh well. Each of the foreshafts will fit into the shaft but they may take a little light twisting to get them to slide all the way down The feathers are from a heritage bread duck I harvested last year and held onto the feathers; It was a big duck!

Some of the previous comments sound like guys already think they're late. Monday being a holiday obviously the post office will be closedp. 1442,

No worries. I can't remember the last time I was in a hurry for any thing. Everyone always compares life to a race. The finish line of a race has cheering, medals, and celebration. Life's finish line doesn't openly appear to be that appealing.

Mullet,

Your package will hit the mail tomorrow morning. I'll pm you a tracking #. If it wasn't for the work related road trip, I wouldn't be fashionably late. Hopefully we share a similar sense of urgency. I'll post a pic or two later tonight when the house is quiet and the line for the computer is shorter.

Here's the sneak preview. I used a lot more natural materials than I usually do. I'm typically a fan of functionality over aesthetics. I assumed modern materials were easier to work with in most cases. In this case I didn't find it any more taxing. Aside from the TBIII, store bought thread, and food coloring to dye the feathers everything was natural.

I gave a light dusting with the airbrush to the fletchings to make them look like fish scale-ish.

The tips are woodchuck leg bone pieces attached with deer sinew. I used a clay marble I found on the lake Erie shore while looking for beach glass to spread the bamboo. Then wrapped it up tight with more sinew.

The safety slide is antler. A word of caution for Mullet, I haven't tested a slide of this type. I usually use a drilled out wire nut, but it wouldn't have looked right on this arrow. It seemed to slide just as easily and I would have test fired it without fear of failure if I had the time to bowfish this week. I  figured I should disclose that kind of info.

It will be on it's way to Floridia in the morning. This was fun and it made me get a little more creative than usual. I look forward to future trades.

You guys are kicking out some real nice arrows for the exchange, I'm enjoying the pics. :)
I gotta get back in it next time around, decided not to this year because work and family obligations have been taking up most of my time and energy the past couple months.

Your still OK mailing out Tues. the 8th.
Dakota Kid you need to do a build along on your fish arrow. 8)

Post by: Dakota Kid on September 05, 2015, 11:02:10 pm
Thanks guys. It always especially nice to get kudos from others practicing the same craft.

That arrow was a little fancier than the ones for my own personal use of course.

Trapper, I be happy to do a build a long the next time I make one. I haven't done one of those yet. I had planned on doing one on how to airbrush snakeskin onto fabric(way easier than you'd think), but never got around to it. Now that I have a request perhaps I'll be more motivated.

Hope she flies true for ya mullet. If you happen to get an alligator gar, you better mail me a few scales. I heard the make excellent broad heads. We have long nose gar up here but they are fairly sparse. Plus there's an endangered species, the spotted gar, that looks quite similar at a distance. It's had to play catch and release with your bow and I have no interest in finding out what kind of fine is attached to killing an endangered species. Come to think of it I think bow fishing is limited to carp, catfish, and suckers in PA. I usually stick to the carp in lakes that have population booms. Too many carp can be bad news for the other fishies.

Post by: mullet on September 05, 2015, 11:07:36 pm
Will do Dakota, We have all of the Gar here and none are protected. With a bow it's easier to practice Fillet and Release.

Post by: Dakota Kid on September 05, 2015, 11:13:38 pm
I heard gar do a number on a fillet knife. Tin snips might be better.  :)

Post by: autologus on September 06, 2015, 10:27:47 am
Clean Gar with a hacksaw and tin snips.  Hack straight down behind the head to the spine then snip down the back to the tail, open it up and take out the backstraps.  My arrow is finished, I will pack it up tonight or tomorrow and put it in the mail Tuesday.  It is a Dacite broadhead on a privet shaft with turkey primaries.

Got an arrow from Smokey 1 Sat. Went to the mail box and there was a tube that was crunched in on one side and my spirits dropped. Opened it up expecting to find two pieces but it was intact, a little crooked but in one piece. Did a little flexing and put it back in tip top shape. Don't know if I can post a picture or not, have had some problems with the computer lately.

Who said metal points can't be primitive? I like the look of the rough forging. I may copy that in the future. I have a silver smithing background and tend to smooth and polish way more than necessary.

PS Thanks for the kudos Mullet.

I still have to post pics the arrow(s) I received, been having computer issues. Hopefully tonight.

Here is the beautiful arrow I got from Paul Semp.  Although it will end its life as a display arrow, I can confirm she flies straight and true.  Thank you Paul - shes a looker.  I really like the arrow sheath too.

I just got a real nice arrow from Old Hippy, I'll get some pictures up tomorrow. Steve, yours will be going out as soon as I get a tube long enough. Thanks, Buddy.

Glad that you like it little buddy. It's hard to believe that I haven't given you an arrow before now. I don't do fancy< just a plain Jane that came out of my quiver, and probably been shot a time or two. It's a hill cane shaft with a Flint Ridge point with sinew wrap and pine pitch binding and store bought feathers.

I got home yesterday to find my son standing at the door going open it!...lol I received a great arrow for my collection from RBLusthaus. Thank you Russ, I love everything about it, the Gar scale point on that thing is great. Sorry but I have lost the ability to resize my pictures for the site. Ed

Finally got my permanent computing station back up and running, so without further adiue.

Here's the promised pics of the arrow I received from 1442.

Here was the surprise top secret arrow. I hope it's okay that I'm sharing it.

Thanks again 1442. I can only hope to knap a point like that someday. I have managed to actually finish a dozen or so thus far without incident. Now I have a hard time deciding whether to knap or scrape bows. I suppose I'm a winner either way.

I didn't realize I cut the right side of that last pic off. The head of that arrow pulls off to reveal a pen. Truly a neat idea.

Glad you like em DK
That secret arrow was only a secret until you saw it then it was no longer a secret, so it was ok to share it.
I am torn between knapping and bowyering and arrow making and fishing, and more fishing all the time, Dang work gets in the way of all of it.
You will make points better than that if you keep at it. sometimes it's best to work on bows or something and then get back to knapping. I made some of my biggest progressions at knapping by actually taking a break from it for a week or so then getting back to it.
If ever I can help just holler.
Terry

Here is the arrow I received from Blackcoyote, it is a hillcane shaft with a broadhead his grandfather used to hunt with.  The fletchings are natural turkey with a really cool printed cock feather.  The pictures cannot do the dye job justice, it is a gorgeous arrow and just as deadly.
