I live in Iowa and remember reading somewhere that Iowa flint was black in color and thought this stuff may be Chert?

Looks like slate, basalt or neiss. Not sure about the spelling. James Parker rock.

It doesn't make a good sound, I'm trying hard to search for a good source. It sounds like rock, not glass like.

You need to smack it. A copper hammer is best. If it shatters or crumbles move on.
Do you know what conchodal fracture looks like?
