I took my 13 year old son, Zach, on his first primitive bow hunt yesterday evening. I positioned him on a well worn travel route in close proximity to some white oaks and red oaks that were dropping acorns. I hunted about 150 yds away at the edge of a thicket. We both hunted on the ground. I had a doe come in to 20 yds and mill around, but it never offered a shot. As the light faded, I couldnt wait to see how he had done, as he was in the better spot. Conditions were near perfect. No wind, cool temps, acorns dropping. After last light, I picked up my pack and headed back toward him. I stopped short and gave him a whistle. He responded and I walked on to him. Even by flashlight I could tell he was excited. I asked about his hunt and he proceeded with this:
"Dad, I saw two deer! They were both does, and one got close, real close! It was still early and I was sitting down. I heard some noise and looked behind me, but didnt see anything. Then, I heard noise again and looked around and there was a deer! Close! Right behind me! It wasn't looking at me, so I started getting up slow and turning in its direction. Then it whirled its head around and we locked eyes. Every time my heart beat, my arms would jump! Then, all of the sudden, it blew. I hadnt ever heard one blow that close before. They are loud! It scared me and i jumped and almost pooped my pants! Then it took off and ran out of range. It was awesome though."
I think I have a hunting partner for life now. Although no shots were taken, or game harvested, this will be one of my most memorable hunts for sure. Nothing like quality time in the woods. ;)

WOW! Great story, I am sure he is going to tell all his friends at school immediately.

That's why we go! Nice story Greg.

Man thats exciting Greg, I bet he'll be ready to get back out there with you every chance he gets. Gonna be hard to focus at school now though, he'll be daydreaming about hunting. :)

I think he would skip football practice (and games) to go hunting, and he's the quarterback. I think he likes it.

Good for you guys! Those are memories for life. I'm glad he's hooked!

He's counting down the days till this Saturday. We'll head back out then.

Awesome to hear he had a great time! He's a good shot as well, so it's only a matter of time before he's field dressing one. Good luck to both of you!

Great story. Reminds me of a similar one from 17 years ago. Hunting is still a strong bond for my son and I. I know how you feel.
