I thought I'd give a little heads up for the new people on here wanting to trade. I've had some people call and email me about wanting to trade for a bow, or something valuable and wanting to know who these new people are.
When they try to check your profile, because it is your first or, maybe sixth post, and nobody knows who you are, you only fill in a post name and everything else is hidden. I can tell you, I would like more before I put an Osage, Character bow in the mail, paying postage and maybe insurance and hoping you are just a nice guy. Also, if you have any questions, you need to ask. Save both of you some money shipping and reshipping stuff back. A recent trade cost me about $60 dollars in shipping, because of lack of communication. I could have spent less in gas taking it there. So, ask all the questions you need and save both of you some money and time.
What I'm getting at, and it's been said before, If you are new, and want to trade for the first time, give all of us trusting people more information. There is a lot of work that goes into building a bow. I know there are a lot of bows given away to people on this site by the great, benevolent people on here. But I can guarantee, not a one likes to be taken advantage of.
So, fill in your profiles, and I do have "The Book".
-
well said
-
And I Second that.......and another thing.....Eddie does have "THE BOOK"..........and I only think that it is proper to fill in the Blanks too....who wants to deal with a Ghost....I would much rather know who and where a Person I am going to give...trade or sell something to lives....IS and something about them....rather than a Screen Name.........
-
good point i have been burned before on a trust deal not on this site but by well a so called friend, and it not good to loose a friendship or trust.
-
That's how I feel Eddie. I don't put much stock in a member who won't fill in ALL the blanks. Not saying they're bad people...It just makes me a little suspicious. If I don't know them, I won't deal with them.
-
Well said.
I have always tried to let people know that I live in the UK when I trade, some are happy to send that far ( if they live in the USA) some you never hear back from, which is fine if not a bit rude.
Try and let everyone know in your profile or in the first emails that you send in a trade......
Thanks for your time.
-
well i was one of those that didn't fill in the blanks, first time user. but now all is filled in,and will gladly give more info. if needed to whoever wants or needs it on a trade which i'm trying to do now. rich battistoni

Ya know Eddie I`m just a tad offended..I dont know alot about selfbows and when we traded and I recieved the bow and the string kept popping off the upper limb I had no idea it was because the brace heigth was to low..I did communicate with you and at no time did you tell me to check the brace heigth..Sorry I cost you 60.00 but it also cost me to..Tell you what your a moderator remove my add and remove my membership as well..Nice you make it sound it was all my fault..
-
Rick, I didn't point fingers or mention names. I just pointed out some particular problems that could come up and some that have. You are the one that just added a name to it.
-
wasnt to hard to figure out who you were talking about being you posted a reply in my add about me costing you 60.00 in shipping on a deal that went bad so to speak..Might have helped alot if you had giving me the brace height at the time of purchase or told me to check it when I told you the string was popping off the upper limb but you didnt..Remember Eddie it cost me in shipping to..Could of all been avoided if you had sent the right brace height info with the bow or asked to check me to check the brace height when I contacted you about the string popping off..
-
I'm not going to get in a pissing war on here. I chalked it up to a learning experiance, hence the line of "better communication". If I recall the emails, I had one chance ti figure out what was wrong before you said send the knife back. Next time I will also find out if the person I'm dealing with has any experiance with archery equiptment. Like I said, a learning experiance.
-
Anybody who knows anything about traditional archery, or chooses to find out, knows you have to set your brace height at an appropriate level. Not the bowmakers fault. If someone is interested, they'll spend the time to find out.
I think EVERYONE who joins this forum should enter all their info. It should be mandatory for trading on the trading post forum. If you're not willing to enter your name, etc., why not? I have not personally had any bad experiences with anyone on the trading post, but before I was willing to trade, I knew the person's info before I did.
-
f only there was a way to determine the knowledge base of the person you were dealing with. A greenhorn archer would not know about brace height unless they were diligent enough to study bow tuning and mechanics. I think that most here would not consider themselves greenhorns.... if you feel you are a greenhorn...study and learn and grow... I also don't feel like anyone here should be put in a position where they are held accountable for the lack of knowledge in others. Yes, we are here to help each other learn but the wealth of knowledge presented, shared, and made available here for general use is a broad enough body of knowledge that any who seek an answer find one quickly or posts a new topic to draw an answer to the desired question. Knowledge is power, Sharing is power, Blaming solves nothing. If you don't know what reasonable brace height for a given bow is (or even what brace height is) you obviously need to do a basic search on tuning up your bow. I don't understand why anyone would think a custom handmade bow would come all ready to go at idea conditions after traveling through the mail, possibly at different temperatures and humidities. Any bow you ever get needs set-up from the simplest selfbow to the most commercial and overpriced parallel limb compound. It isn't a gun.... and after all even tguns need sighted in, tuned, maintenanced, and cleaned. Nobody gets to take a car back because the dealer didn't tell them to put gas in the car or how to change the oil.
-
Very well said, OhioJohn, That's why I posted this thread, so everybody can add some input and maybe, educate and help everybody that is new to this.
-
Good points all! I really like the trading post feature and hope all the people I've traded with feel as positive about the trades as I do. The better the communication before the trade is completed, the better things work out. Ron
-
For the people who feel comfortable posting their personal information on the internet that's fine, I recently however had the experience of some users on another bow forum who decided to play dirty pool and post all kinds of personal information on channel maliciously while moderators sat back and watched,
if I am trading or doing business with someone then they will by neccessity be privy to my personal information during the transaction, if someone wants they can always ask for references, plus if you are simply buying it is customary to withold shipment until payment is received, no more guarantee is needed in such case,
if you want to make your info public fine, but it is only prudent today to consider that choice wisely, and you shouldn't have shadows cast on you because of your privacy choices

Guys, this is all good information. I too am not to quick to put out too much personal info. I would tend to get that out of the way in private emails. I have read constantly about bows for about six months and have learned a lot, but I am still not a knowledgable bow guru. And I do admit to buying an osage self bow and figured you just strung and shoot. I was lucky, it shot well right out of the tube. But, if it didn't I would have been at a loss. I think both have points to learn from. We are a trusting lot and all need to work with each other to avoid such problems. Happy trading>

As a newbie i know i certainly wouldn't be offend if the seller asked for a Down payment or some collateral peice. as a buyer i wold be a little hesitant of a seller asking for Full payment before i saw anything as this tranaction is a two way street, i dont want to send off 200 dollars and never see any thing returned in the mail.
-
funny/sad... Rick has been around selfbows for years...
Bob
-
I think you have me mixed up with Barb she was into selfbows not me..After she died I gave away most of her selfbows and archery equipment..

Input;
Guilty as charged. ::)
I'll go and fill-in the "book" right now. ;) ;D

On one of the M/L sites I frequent they don't like handles, only real names, deal suspiciously with people who won't divulge their full name and won't give them the time of day if they remain anonymous.

How can they tell if the name registered is real and not made up?

I always wondered why a lot of people on here don't put in their location. ??? Maybe they are in the Witness Protection Program. :o :o;D ;D "Hey, Vinny, lookit dis, it's Ernie da Egg! :o you know, da guy what wuz cookin da Boss's books, and took some of da Boss's money, and then turned informant, says here, now he's cookin rocks! Says across da bridge, in Manistique, Mi. ! Get da boys, I gotta call da Boss, and tell him we're takin a little trip!" 8) ;D ;D

I know some wonder why people don't use their real names or include their location. Personally, I have known friends who've had issues with people on forums where they were spammed a great deal, or harassed based upon someone deciding in their strangeness to look them up, and low and behold, their actual names came up while someone else Googled them! So their info was out there for all to see,...not something I'd want someone to be able to do to me or friends of mine.
For me, its a privacy thing, that's all,... but after reading this thread I can fully understand the frustration and aggravation of you guys with bad deals, etc. That's terrible!
For me, I'm more than happy to make a deal with someone on here, and "then" as we talk, give my info, ect. before finalizing and deals, trades, etc...not just throw it around to another person I don't know, and who does not know me.
Like I said, just a privacy thing, that's all...for me at least! ;)

I get a kick out of people who don't want any info about them on their profile. While I fully understand their logic, they usually join enough forums that you can search their user name and find info from numerous forums that they used the same name on. Put the info together and you know exactly who they are. Change your user names on each forum if you want to remain anonymous. And DONT USE FACEBOOK.

Well it's about time Gus! Welcome to the PA Forum!
Yes Sir I hear ya Mr. Halverson...
How ever its like I have learned before, I try to keep my mouth closed and my eyes and ears open.
That way I learn a lot and I don't step on anyones' toes...
On a different note, my first bow is a 68 inch nock to nock Osage self bow. I have finished my string jig and built my first tillering string. Have the wood in hand (Red Oak 1x's) to build my tillering tree.
And I'm ready begin tillering my new bow. Life is pretty good.
I have many of you to thank for Insperation to "Get'er Done"...
And I do, Thank You.

I personally have about a 1000 x-girlfriends that all love to hack my myspace account and post gay porn on it and such... or used to when I had a account, so I usually OPT out of posting personal info for all eyes to see. ... Not that I don't probably derserve it or nothing...

A 1000?? :o Maybe you ought to treat them a little nicer.

This is my first post on PA. I currently use a Bear Grizzly recurve @ 55lb. I am able to draw and shoot the warbow only by drawing back while aiming sky high then dropping my aim down to the target. I have trained with this bow for the past 3 months and I am not able to draw regularly ( level instead of aiming sky high). If anyone has advice It would be very helpful. I train with it every other day and I have no gain with draw height only by pointing it sky high then pulling back I can achieve full anchor to corner of mouth draw. I hate to admit but yes I over bowed by self.. ;D . I would love advice or a trade for a 45-55 lb long bow at least 69 inches long and a fps over 150. War bow is new and always unbraced after each use and never braced only while target shooting. advice or trades welcomed. Oh and yes this is my first post and yes If you trade you will get the trade as quick as I can get it ready with every detail of safety. Also may trade for a table vice that is the same design in the last PA magazine with the rotating jaws.
-
you have any pictures ,what wood it is made from?
-
bamboo back ipe center and hickory belly trilam..getting ready for my work pictures later on tonight or tomorrow.
-
Welcome aboard BirdPoint!
This is a Great Site, with with some of the Best Folks to be found, in my opinion.
Good Descriptions are very helpful.
Reasonably good Photos will help the good folks of this forum to better assist in a solution. :)

This needs to be in a Thread of it's own, though. ::)

Thank You Mullet will do

Rudder bows Tri-lam boo, ipe,& hickory English war bow at 80-90 lb range.consider all trades for table vice like the one in last months PA magazine with the rotating jaws. Also would trade for a Gransfors Bruks Swedish Carving Axe and Long bows the are not recurved.
-
;D Meant to write Long bows just as long as it is not recurved must be a long bow. I still have original box and papers. Thank you!
-
sent you a pm.
-
Wow. Cool bow.
On another note, some people here (young ones like me) have good reason not to post some data publicly- age, etc.
But if you PM me with a reason to know such data I may share it. I do see the reasons for posting many things... shipping cost estimates, practicality of a trade, etc.
-
I'm new here and trying to learn the ways of PA. How can I be more informative? Thanks guys
-
Just be honest and respect the person you trade with by communicating with each other.
-
Dang it! I thought this was going to be a thread giving me all the "haggling" advice I needed to weasel a sweet bow out of one of you guys for a song or bag of rocks or something. :'(
So......... how do you? ;D
-
Easy peasy. Build about a hundred mediocre bows while learning to turn out something great. Then start trading those great bows for those made by others! >:D
