Anyone have any experience with this? My inlaws have about 500 pounds of it in their yard.
-
Ancientarcher posted a list by state of knappable rock.
Wonderstone is listed last for Utah.
But it is sought after by rock hounds.

well darn. I would like to get something that I don't have to buy, and the place to get utah wonderstone is kind of close. It looks almost like sand stone. Any Idea if it heat treats?
-
Wonder stone? ??? Pictures? ;)

Stock photo. The stuff my Inlaws have is very orange and purple. Says that it has a hardness of 7,
-
Oh Lordy! If that stuff is knappable, there is potential for art points!
-
I have read both, that it is, and that it isn't. It isn't as hard as glass, so it may be difficult to work. That was why I was wondering about heat treating it. It is very good looking stuff, and the place to gather it is only about an hour and a half from my house. My inlaws have a few boulders (150 plus pound rocks) of it in their rock garden. Next time i'm there I will sneak a chunk and see how it breaks.
-
I've seen some stunning points made from it. True jaw droppers!
-
I'll get some asap and see how it goes. Maybe trade fodder.
-
To add to what has been said, I guess it is a type of Rhyolite. If that helps anyone decide if that makes it more knappable.
-
A couple of raps with a hammer stone to see if it breaks with a concoidial fissure should answer your question. If it is soft or easy to flake like opalized materals you can still knap it but its not much good for a tool or point! Joe
-
I'm hoping to get down there in the next few days. Ill see if I can talk them into giving me some (They have a lot). I'm very new to all of this so sorry if my questions seem repetitive. I'll see how it breaks.
-
Thanks for the picture. That stuff is awesome! I hope it will take heat, and you can make some fancy points from it. Or send some to Tower, and see what he can do with it, or Jack Crafty, or Mullet. Cool looking stuff. Thanks again for the picture.

I know where some of that is in a yard in the town I work in >:D. I've been driving by over a year checking it out and trying to figure out what it was.
-
There is an old you tube vid w/ a wonder stone knapped point, but I can't find it.
-
When and if you find it please post it
-
Cool looking stuff! Moh's hardness scale 7? If so, break out the dogwood billets and icy hot for the arm.

I have been to the site out in the hills of Utah where this can be mined. Most of what was there whae I was there was not knappable, but there is some that can be. We did not have great digging equipment when we were there so we could not dig real well for it. I could see that deeper down there was material that was better quality. Gem trails of Utah should have directions to the site.
-
How deep am I going to have to dig? I don't mind the work if it is worth it in the end. Digging through rock, or dirt?
-
That's a darn pretty rock. Seen some killer points made from similar wonderstone.
-
I went and mowed my wifes grandparents lawns today and took this photo. This is the best looking chunk of wonderstone they have in their rock garden. It looks and feels like it would break right, but it has been there since they have lived there, and that is close to 40 years of freeze thaw. I really need to make a trip and get some.
-
drool...
-
I don't see any freeze cracks. Hit it! :D
-
I need to just take a trip out and get about 200 pounds of my own! I'll post what it makes.
-
Oh man that is some cool looking stuff.
-
That one looks sandy/ grainy but apparently it fractures. You like gray rocks ::)?
-
My only reservation on taking a trip is it will be about $100 in gas, to strike out would make me a bit angry. When I do go, If I find it spalls right I will have plenty for trade.
-
Ummm, I think you need to answer Cowboys' question, I've seen what usually happens when you do. ::) ;)
-
Stuff I have seen is always too grainy.
-
LOL, Yes, I love any rock I can smash, sometimes I can even make something out of them.
-
If that was in my inlaws yard it would be gone and replaced with lime stone " If you know what I mean!!"

I would have taken a chunk, but they weren't home, and have a son (he's 60) living with them that steals just about anything that isn't bolted down, and they don't need that crap! LOL
