Title: Yellow Birch for shafting???
Post by: Easternarcher on April 26, 2007, 11:11:55 pm
HEy Guys....I got wind of a good deal on rough sawn/seasoned yellow birch, cherry and ash lumber this week. ;D
I bought all I could afford or load in the truck at the time.....also picked up the Makita planer you see in the pic...

Question I have is can I use some of the yellow birch as hand planed shafting? Anybody tried Yellow birch as shaft wood?
I got lots of plans for this lumber....paddles, Turkey calls, snowshoe frames and yes, maybe even a bow or two ::)  This is only about a third of what I got....

ive used it and never had a problem with it. i like birch although it has a tendency to twist like a pretzel. it hand straightens easily though. just make sure it has good grain so you dont have to many runoffs on the shaft. peace
