Title: Knotty Black locust asymmetric 66# @ 27”
Post by: Mo_coon-catcher on March 10, 2022, 07:52:41 pm
Here’s a black locust bow I recently finished. The stave had a couple big knots that I didn’t want to place in the same limb, so I placed the handle right betweeen them. This made the top limb 33” long and the bottom limb is 23”. I made the limbs 2”wide from fade to mid limb then tapering to justs under 1/2”. The bottom knock had a good sized knot in it and a decent wiggle too. So I left it fat with no overlay. The top limb got a pink ivory overlay. I heat treated it flat after I got it braced. It took about 1” set on the top limb and about 5/8” on the bottom limb. I ended up cutting the leather for the handle wrap a little crooked. But, it works just fine. It was sewn on wet and let to dry tight. It’s finished with a coat of linseed oil, then 6 coats of truoil, followed by a quick blast of rattle can satin lacquer. It shoots surprisingly smoothly. No different than anything else I’ve shot.

Thanks for looking

Kyle

What Ed said Kyle...you really let the wood decide what it would look like and got a very nice bow out of it.   :OK

Talk about letting the wood tell you what it wants. Cool looking bow in all aspects.

Very cool design on a beautiful and challenging black locust stave. Very nice work!

That bow has character like none other. I can’t help but think the knots look like saggy skin in an elbow! Obviously an advanced build that you nailed there - great job!

Beautiful bow. A great example that an asymmetrical design executed properly can make a good shooting bow. Love the character, too.

I've experienced the same situation with knots and would have never considered making one limb 10 inches longer than the other. You've added a new plan to my arsenal. I can't wait for a stave that fits the bill.

Nice job on a nasty stave, looks like you pulled it off just fine. :)
