got a hickory stave, should i boil or heat gun the recurves in ?

I always steam white woods like hickory. It's easier to do the bend and you can't scorch the wood like you can with dry heat. Just be sure you let the stave sit for a day or two to get back to equilibrium moisture content. Just what I do though, and I never put recurves in, I only steam to align the tips or take doglegs out.

I have has steamed recurves pull out of hickory. Steaming in the bends and setting with dry heat seemed to work better.

Steam or boil on hickory is safer, I use dry heat most of the time to flip tips but you are always taking a chance :). I like living on the edge. :o ;) :)
